In many of his artworks, Bierstadt artistically exploited the landscapes of the American West. Be that as it may, Indian sunset deer by a lake is a masterpiece that showcases Bierstadt talent in painting.

In this painting, Bierstadt used deers, a lake, and a forest with green and luminous orange trees to reveal the western American wilderness's stunning nature and landscape. Albert Bierstadt was a German-born American artist between 1830 to 1902. He was best known for his lavish paintings of the landscape of the American West. Bierstadt was a prolific artist who used strong contrast of darkness and light while doing his paintings. This artist was a member of Hudson River School, an American art movement comprising like-minded painters who did the paintings along the Hudson River. Bierstadt travelled to the western territories in the U.S with land surveying teams and authors, capturing sketches that served as a basis for his epic, large scale paintings that brought him to applaud. He continued with his painting work until he died in 1902.

In this painting, Bierstadt used the Hudson River school style. This style involves romanticizing paintings with dramatic lighting and painting it on a grand scale. This painting is significant in person, making it very appealing. Also, it features a powerful warm light of sunset, illuminating trees and deer in the foreground. The light adds a luminous touch to the painting. In addition, the artist used a straightforward method in the application of paint. The brush strokes are accurate to reveal the subject. He also used graphite, canvas and oil in his painting.

In this landscape painting, Albert Bierstadt portrays the scenic view of nature in the landscape of West America in all its beautiful colours. Generally, in a landscape, you find natural scenery and open space. From the painting, there are natural sceneries such as a forest and a lake. The image also captures an open valley where three deer portrays their colourful lives in the wilderness.

Bierstadt was a quintessential painter of the romantic landscapes of the American West in the 19th century. This prolific painter completed over 500 paintings during his lifetime. One of his beautiful paintings is Indian sunset deer by a lake. Nevertheless, this painting date is undated but was between the year 1880 to 1890, and its current location is Yale University Art Gallery. The artist also featured the lives of local native Indians within other paintings such as Indians in Council, California, Indians Spear Fishing and Indian Encampment, Late Afternoon.
