Boys in the Sea

A boy stands in the shallows, one hand lifted across his brow. Beneath him, his reflection stretches almost to the bottom of the painting. Behind him, bodies and breaking waves form a loose, lively band. Joaquín Sorolla brings these different kinds of movement together in Boys in the Sea: the small adjustment of a hand, the shifting balance of bathers and the continuous advance of water towards the shore.

Painted in 1908, the work was catalogued by Sotheby’s as Niños en el mar. Playa de Valencia—Children in the Sea, Valencia Beach. It is an oil on canvas measuring 81 × 106 cm, with a signature and date recorded at the lower left. The 2011 sale record documents its history in private collections.^[1] Its broad format leaves the standing child room while the sea continues around and beyond him.

The boy who shades his eyes

The nearest boy is the picture’s strongest vertical. His raised right arm opens sideways, making a small angular shape above the long line of his torso and legs. His other arm falls close to his side. The imbalance between the two arms keeps the stance from becoming rigid, while the lifted elbow gives the figure a clear outline against the blue water.

That hand provides a particularly direct way of understanding the light. We see a body responding to brightness: the arm rises and the brow gains a little shelter. The gesture makes the sunlight tangible without a painted sun appearing overhead. It also concentrates attention on a face whose small features remain less prominent than the large arrangement of head, arm and shoulder. At this distance, the pose carries the encounter.

Sorolla leaves water between the boy and the other bathers. The interval makes him seem close to us and gives his silhouette room to register. He faces towards the foreground, while the figures behind turn or incline in different directions. Their arrangement creates several centres of activity. The standing child holds the eye briefly before it travels into a scene that extends beyond him.

Warm ochres and pale highlights give the body substance against the surrounding blue. Darker touches along its edges and beneath the lifted arm strengthen the turning of the form. The figure remains slender, yet its placement gives it considerable weight in the composition. Much of that weight comes from the reflection below, which effectively lengthens its presence across the canvas.

A reflection that changes the scale

The boy’s reflected colour is one of the most striking features of the foreground. Orange and yellow descend from his feet through cooler blue and violet passages. The reflection wavers and broadens, losing the clear boundaries of the body above it. Its broken shape tells us something about the surface carrying it: a moving skin of water can repeat a figure while continually altering its outline.

This warm trail draws the eye downwards. As it approaches the lower edge, it brings the distant band of bathers into a relationship with the space immediately before the viewer. The composition gains depth through a simple sequence: reflection, standing boy, companions, surf and distant sail. Each element offers a different measure of distance.

The other figures also scatter warm notes across the blue. These smaller patches keep the foreground boy’s colour from standing alone. They establish a rhythm that rises through the picture, becoming more compact as it approaches the breakers. Where a body meets foam or reflected light, an outline can become difficult to separate from its surroundings. The eye completes the figure from a few connected marks.

Body and reflection are both made from touches of colour, assembled differently. In the nearest boy they gather into a sustained upright shape. Below him they spread into an irregular column; farther away, they resolve into quick glimpses of heads, shoulders and limbs. Looking between these areas reveals how economically Sorolla varies the amount of information he gives us.

The shore runs diagonally

Water occupies nearly the whole canvas, though its character changes from foreground to distance. Across the lower right, a broad pale turquoise area sweeps diagonally into the scene. Beside it lies a stronger blue zone surrounding the boy. The oblique boundary between these areas gives the foreground a direction of its own, crossing the more horizontal movement of the surf.

The shore is felt through these changes of surface and colour. Sorolla does not need a strongly drawn strip of dry sand to establish where the water thins. Pale passages, streaks of reflected warmth and the children’s contact with the shallows make the meeting of land and sea legible. The foreground seems spacious because so much of it remains available to these broad transitions.

Farther back, white foam makes a much more abrupt interruption. It runs across the painting behind the standing boy, separating his relatively open patch of water from the denser activity beyond. Its uneven edge resists the straightness of a compositional dividing line. Dark green and blue gather behind it, and further breaks of white carry the sequence towards the horizon.

The children occupy this changing interval between the broad shallows and the surf. An upright figure near the centre repeats the foreground boy’s vertical at a smaller scale. To the right, a lower body introduces a nearly horizontal accent. Farther figures mingle with the broken wave line. Their postures let us read the same water as something to stand in, lean into and move through.

A narrow sky and a distant sail

The horizon sits very high, leaving only a thin strip of sky. Most of the view is given to surfaces within reach of the bathers. This choice gives the sea an unusual visual breadth: its colour spreads from immediately beneath the viewer to the far edge of the picture, with little open sky to draw attention away from it.

A pale sail near the upper right provides a small but decisive change of scale. Compared with the children, the boat is distant; compared with the strip of sky, its sail is a prominent shape. Its light colour answers the foam below, connecting the farthest part of the scene to the breakers. The triangular form also offers a crisp counterpoint to the rounded heads and flexible bodies.

That boat adds another kind of presence to the beach scene. The children occupy the near water, while a vessel crosses the farther sea. The painting brings these uses of the coast into one view without requiring an interaction between them. Our eye can move from a hand at a brow to a sail on the horizon, taking in the breadth of the setting through a few carefully placed forms.

The sky’s restraint also changes how we experience the light. Brightness arrives chiefly through bodies, foam and reflections. Instead of a large luminous background, Sorolla gives us repeated encounters with illuminated surfaces. The foreground gesture and the sea’s changing colours make the atmosphere perceptible at the level of the figures.

Colour beneath the brightness

The blue water contains considerable variation. Some passages incline towards green; others deepen towards violet. Pale blue sweeps across the shallows, while stronger darks collect around the distant foam. Warm marks interrupt these cool areas wherever a body or reflection enters them. The brightness depends on these relationships as much as on the white highlights themselves.

There is also a quieter material element beneath the colour. In the condition report published with the 2011 sale, Simon Parkes Art Conservation identified a grey ground visible in parts of the sky and waves. The report treated those exposed passages as intentional features of the painting.^[1] These quieter intervals contribute to the range between the brightest and darkest passages.

The reproduction allows us to follow broad changes in handling. Long, slanting sweeps establish the foreground water, while compact marks gather around the smaller figures. Across the surf, irregular light strokes create edges that repeatedly gather and dissolve. These differences give each part of the canvas an appropriate pace. The near water opens out; the bathers interrupt it; the breaking waves quicken the pattern towards the top.

From Valencia to New York

The painting appeared as number 301 in the Hispanic Society of America’s 1909 New York exhibition. Its catalogue lists Niños en el mar, translated as Children in the sea, and reproduces this composition. The title page gives the exhibition dates as 8 February to 8 March 1909.^[2] Sotheby’s exhibition history also records the painting’s subsequent appearance in Buffalo and Boston under number 170.^[1]

The New York catalogue places it among a varied group of coastal subjects. Nearby entries include a Valencian boat picture, a little brother, children on the beach and children playing in the water.^[2] These titles show the range of subjects offered to the exhibition’s visitors, while the illustrations reveal how different the resulting arrangements could be.

One useful comparison is Boys on the Beach, also represented in that catalogue as number 298.^[2] There a broad straw hat and a reclining body fill the foreground, with an upright companion immediately behind. The viewpoint brings us close to the figures and the wet surface around them. In Boys in the Sea, the greater interval between the nearest boy and his companions opens a longer route into the picture. A standing body and its reflection become the principal connection between foreground and distance.

That connection gives this painting its particular character. The boy’s small act of shading his eyes is held above a long, restless echo in the water. Behind him, separate figures meet the surf in separate ways. Sorolla makes the scene easy to enter, then gives the eye enough changes of direction, colour and scale to keep it moving across the whole beach.
