Paul Cezanne

Paul Cezanne linked the post-impressionist art movement with what followed in the 20th century and few artists have left such a significant influence as this one.

The post impressionist work of Cezanne is known to have inspired many from the Cubist art movement, such as Pablo Picasso, Georges Braque and Juan Gris. Cezanne himself used the French countryside to fire his imagination, though more contrived still life and portrait paintings also figure prominently with in his career. The work of this famous French painter has been loosely categorised into four categories, namely his dark period, followed by his impressionist period, mature period and then the final years of his work. Each of these were spent in either Paris, Provence, or a combination of the two.

Cezanne's influence went far beyond the boundaries of his own country, though. The role of Paris at that time was highly significant in the art world, with creative artists from all across Europe spending time in the city in order to share ideas with likeminded people. The likes of Modigliani, Monet, Toulouse-Lautrec and many more famous artists made significant progression in their careers during their time in the French capital. Discussion of Cezanne's work would then spread to the likes of Italy, UK, Germany, Spain from those who had come across his art work in Paris.

Cezanne struggled initially for academic acclaim, but younger artists were already very much inspired by his work by the time of the 1907 retrospective of his work in Paris. If was now that he was to receive the respect that his work deserved, and this single exhibition was to prove highly significant in the subsequent formation of the Cubist art movement. Besides the cubists, there were also many other abstract artists who also drew on the work of Cezanne, such as Paul Klee and Kasimir Malevich.

Apples and Oranges

Apples and Oranges is classic Cezanne with colourful still life painting which this post-impressionist is well remembered for. Cezanne's reputation in the modern day includes still lifes and landscape paintings though he also produced significant portrait works as well. The artist loved using fruit in static scenes for his still life paintings and this is common in the careers of many other artists, with the round shapes offering a great opportunity to practice with lighting and shadow and different choices of fruit bringing different colour combinations to each painting.

Card Players

Card Players features a classic scene of French life and has proven to be one of the artist's most loved paintings, despite falling outside of his frequent habit of producing landscapes and still life paintings. Card Players clearly is his best known portrait painting and features two gentleman playing cards in a cafe with a bottle of wine besides them. There is an atmosphere within the painting which oozes French life and this appeals to many around the world who appreciate class and style.

Still Life

Still Life paintings by Paul Cezanne continue above with this particular work again concentrating on apples and oranges, this time accompanied by various objects to give the feel of someone's living room. A large cloth and vases are used to add interest to this painting and also differentiate it from all his other fruit-based still lifes. The charming detail included on some of the vases and pots help this to stand out as one of his best works within this genre whilst others had less detail.

Bathers

Bathers seen above is one of a great number of Paul Cezanne works, including pencil sketches and oil paintings, which portray a complex set of people bathing in the countryside, normally nude which itself adds challenge to the artist. The Bathers series is often refered to as Les Grandes Baigneuses or similar which are the original French titles that the painter would have given to them at the time. The use of nude portraits is common within art and forces the painter to concentrate on fine detail for each person included. Bathers has the added interests of many people together, plus activity within the beautiful French countryside.

Landscape

Landscape above is a generally titled painting that helps represent the artist's contributions to the post-impressionist genre of landscape painting. This was a topic which inspired him and this helped him to produce great numbers of paintings of French landscapes with a frequent inclusion of trees, mountains, lakes and charming French bridges.

Vase and Apples

Vase and Apples is a further notable still life painting by Cezanne which offers interesting technique to the post-impressionist art movement. It again uses the artist's prefered fruit, apples, which made excellent subjects for his painting style thanks to their ability to reflect and hold colour and light which was fundamental to many post-impressionist painters such as Paul Cezanne.

Mont Sainte-Victoire is one of many exceptional landscape paintings by Cezanne where a mountain is the main focus of the work. Bridge at Maincy

Bridge at Maincy is the most popular Cezanne painting depicting a bridge, and the artist included several different French bridges in his paintings across his career. Paul Cezanne found bridges offered seamless connections with their surrounding landscapes in many examples and as such was happy to use them for detail within many of his landscape oil paintings.
