A Rooftop with Flowers

Flowers crowd the far side of a small terrace, while a stretch of pale paving opens towards the viewer. Joaquín Sorolla brings us close enough to distinguish the rounded pots, the boards beneath them and the shadows at their feet. Beyond those objects, leaves and blossoms become an interwoven surface of green, red, white and yellow. The painting turns a confined outdoor corner into a remarkably varied encounter with light.

Bonhams catalogues Una azotea con flores as a 1902 oil on canvas, 54.5 × 75.5 centimetres, probably painted in Valencia. The precise terrace remains unidentified. Its Paris dedication dates from 1906.^[1]

A terrace built from small differences

The viewpoint places us inside the enclosure, looking slightly down across the floor. A wall rises immediately on the left, close to the picture edge. Beside it, a long wooden support carries several pots towards the foreground. More plants stand on the paving beyond, making a loose, uneven boundary across the terrace. At the right, short steps introduce another level. These few architectural elements establish a place that feels accessible on foot, even though the plants almost close the way ahead.

Sorolla makes the wooden support particularly useful to our understanding of space. Its broad upper surface narrows as it recedes, and the long edge carries the eye towards the denser planting. Against its relatively straight boundaries, stems and leaves reach in several directions. The plants spill over the support and interrupt its outline. This meeting of an orderly structure with irregular growth gives the left side much of its interest.

The pots are equally important. Some are warm brown, others grey or blue, and they vary in width and height. Their rims and curved sides are more readily distinguished near the front than within the crowded foliage. Small intervals between them allow the bright ground to show through. We can follow individual containers across the terrace before losing their separate shapes in the deeper mass of leaves.

That movement between separation and overlap is one of the painting's strongest effects. In the foreground, a pot is an object with weight, a lip, a base and a shadow. Farther back, a few brown strokes may be enough to suggest another container. The viewer supplies continuity between the two. Sorolla can therefore describe a considerable quantity of planting without giving every part the same degree of finish.

There are no figures, but the arrangement carries visible evidence of tending. Containers have been set on the raised support and grouped beside the wall; plants occupy several heights within a limited floor area. The terrace offers a view of cultivated nature assembled in a built setting. Its intimacy comes partly from the scale of those ordinary objects and the short distances between them.

Light across the floor

The open paving at lower right gives the composition room to breathe. Its pale surface occupies a substantial area, balancing the crowded flowers above and to the left. It also reveals the direction and strength of the light through a sequence of shadows. Small dark shapes gather beneath the pots, while a much broader band extends towards the lower edge beside the wooden support.

That broad shadow is a cool grey with blue and violet tendencies. It does more than darken the ground. Its long boundary leads towards the middle of the picture, helping to connect the near pots with the plants beyond. The brighter paving beside it looks more exposed because the two areas share a clear dividing edge. Light becomes legible through the shape of the interruption.

Within the planting, the boundaries are less regular. Dark green passages lie behind sharp, bright touches, and pale leaves emerge against deeper recesses. Sorolla gives the foliage enough internal darkness to prevent its greens from becoming a flat decorative screen. Here the eye moves between different depths rather than following a single clean contour. A flower can appear close because its colour stands against a dark interval, even where its stem is scarcely described.

The wall contributes another sort of brightness. It forms a relatively quiet vertical plane beside the restless plants, but its colour is uneven: cool grey, greenish and warmer passages disturb the pale surface. Near the top left, dark linear marks cut across it. Below, the red flowers stand out with particular force. The same red would look different against the busy foliage; against the wall it becomes a more distinct accent.

These relationships connect the terrace to a wider concern in Sorolla's work. The Museo Sorolla catalogue Arte de la luz describes his recurring interest in light filtered through foliage or screens and falling across walls, floors and, in other pictures, people.^[2] Here the floor, wall and pots offer several different surfaces on which brightness can register. The flowers share the subject with the spaces around them.

Reading the brushwork

Close looking shifts attention from the terrace to the marks that construct it. The boards at left are suggested through long strokes following their length. Around the flowers, shorter touches change direction and overlap. Along the front row of pots, curved and slanting marks establish rounded volumes. The handling responds to the difference between a flat support, an enclosing vessel and a mass of leaves.

Red blossoms appear as compact bursts distributed across the planting. Their repetitions carry the eye from the group at left towards the middle and right. White and pale yellow touches create another route, rising towards the upper right where the foliage is brightest. The two movements cross and mingle. No single flower becomes an isolated centrepiece; the arrangement depends on the relationship between many small accents.

Green provides the connecting fabric, but it changes constantly. Some passages are yellowish and light, some cooler and bluer, and others nearly dark enough to merge with the spaces behind. This range allows leaves to register as receiving light, turning away from it or overlapping one another. The result is a sense of density achieved through differences in colour and value rather than an inventory of precisely outlined leaves.

The abundant marks also make the pale foreground more effective. After following the complicated planting, the eye can rest on the quieter floor, then move back towards a pot or a patch of red. The painting offers both concentrated looking and broader scanning. Its surface remains active, yet the distribution of activity gives it a clear structure.

Two dates and a journey to Paris

The writing at lower left forms a small patch of dark handwritten marks among the pots and boards. It belongs to the painting's later history as well as to its visible surface. Bonhams traces the canvas from Sorolla's 1906 gift to Jules Claretie, through the Claretie family, to Dr Gustav Rau's purchase at Christie's London on 4 December 1973, lot 9. It reappeared as lot 30 in Bonhams's Rau UNICEF sale of 5 December 2013.^[1]

The auction catalogue also identifies its appearance in Sorolla's Paris exhibition of 1906 as number 5. The original exhibition catalogue lists that number under a terrace title, within an opening sequence that includes coastal views, orange trees and studies.^[1][3] This setting helps us see the picture within the breadth of subjects presented to a French audience. An intimate terrace could take its place alongside seas, landscapes and portraits.

The painted terrace and the dedication belong to different moments. The inscription adds a personal address to an existing view, giving this enclosed place a connection beyond its walls.

Gardens beyond the rooftop

Garden subjects already occur earlier in Sorolla's career. Arte de la luz, for example, dates a small Italian garden study between 1885 and 1889.^[2] The rooftop belongs within an established interest in enclosed outdoor places, while its particular combination of pots, wall and paving gives it a distinct character. Its significance lies in the concentration of those elements within a shallow, closely observed space.

A useful comparison is The Gardens at the Sorolla Family House. In that composition, pale columns and other built features stand among greenery, and a chair provides a conspicuous point of human scale. Here, the vessels and wooden support establish that scale. Both pictures allow vegetation to overlap architecture, but the rooftop places the small, movable container at the centre of the relationship.

The later Madrid garden also belonged to a more elaborate setting. The museum's guide describes the house, occupied from 1911, and its garden of three distinct spaces drawing on Andalusian and Italian examples.^[4] Against that context, the rooftop's close grouping of pots has its own appeal. A few boards, a wall and a short flight of steps provide all the structure this painting needs. The flowers spread across those boundaries, while the light holds their separate forms together.
