In the painting, an aged lady stare ahead, protecting her eyes from the candlelight, while the lad behind her holds his candle ready to be lit. This painting remained in Ruben’s ownership until his demise for it was not meant for sale. It is possible he used it in his studio as a learning tool for his students.
