Lighthouse Walk at Biarritz

The sea spreads almost from edge to edge in Joaquín Sorolla’s Lighthouse Walk at Biarritz, but the people occupy a narrow strip of land above it. Five figures interrupt the pale water: a woman beneath a parasol at the left, a child in a red jacket, and three women grouped towards the right. Their clothes make a sequence of distinct silhouettes across the long canvas. Between them, the beach drops away, giving the scene a breadth that the figures’ immediate surroundings only partly reveal.

Painted during Sorolla’s family stay at Biarritz in the summer of 1906, the picture belongs to the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. It is an oil on canvas measuring 68.3 × 188.6 centimetres, accession 22.691. The museum identifies María with the parasol at the left and Elena in the red jacket. Clotilde is likely the third figure from the left.^[1] Those family connections give particular names to some of the figures, while the picture’s arrangement makes each person part of a larger pattern of cloth, ground and water.

A walk stretched across the coast

The unusually wide format encourages the eye to travel sideways. Yet Sorolla places several interruptions along that route. The parasol rises close to the upper left edge; the child’s red jacket arrests attention nearer the middle; a woman’s spreading white skirt fills the foreground further right. These shapes have different weights. The parasol is light and open, its thin ribs visible against the sky. The jacket is compact and saturated. The skirt gathers a broad area of brightness beneath the figure’s head and shoulders.

The intervals matter as much as the figures. A large opening separates María from Elena, exposing the sloping beach and the lines of surf below. A smaller gap between Elena and the next woman brings the water close to their outlines. The two women at the far right overlap more tightly. The group consequently moves from separation to concentration, without becoming a regular procession. Our attention can follow the coastline, pause at a face or hat, then pass through a gap to the sea.

The ground rises and falls across the foreground. Its yellow-green surface is crossed by darker marks, with a railing visible low on the left and dark lines extending beneath the figures. These features locate the walkers on an elevated coastal path. The beach beyond is viewed at a much steeper angle: a broad sandy slope meets a narrow bright edge of water. The two spaces feel close in the picture, although their different levels place a real distance between them. Tiny figures below help make that descent legible.

Clothes that catch the light

White in this painting changes constantly. María’s dress appears comparatively grey beneath the parasol. The woman near the centre-right has a much brighter skirt, crossed by small darker strokes. At the far right, another white dress catches the light along its bodice and sloping folds. Behind it, a dark skirt establishes a deep vertical passage. Sorolla makes the pale garments readable by placing them against different neighbours: blue water, green ground, dark cloth and the shadows of their own folds.

The child’s clothing supplies the strongest change of colour. Her red jacket forms a clear, nearly self-contained shape above the white skirt. Its lower edge spreads out from the body, while the skirt breaks into a more irregular contour. Dark stockings separate it from the pale shoes. The result is a figure built from sharp changes in value and colour, readily visible even when the whole panorama is seen at a distance. Her turned head also directs attention back towards the left, across the broad gap in the group.

Hats and accessories complicate those simple masses. Elena’s hat has warm yellow and orange accents and a dark ribbon hanging behind. María’s pale parasol and hat overlap near her head, while a blue object hangs from her lowered hand. Towards the right, a broad warm-coloured hat sits beside a much darker one. Each small shape has a different edge or angle. Together they prevent the upper parts of the figures from settling into a single level line.

The third figure from the left is especially intricate. A scarf wraps around her head and stretches outward beside her shoulder. A long pale end lifts away to the right. Her lowered arm reaches towards a slender dark stick, while the skirt descends in a much broader curve. These narrow extensions make a network around the solid body. The scarf’s movement becomes visible through its shape and its separation from the dress; the surrounding space allows that movement to register.

The sea behind the figures

The water has its own structure. Near the top, a comparatively even blue band extends towards the horizon. Below, paler grey-blue and greenish passages spread across the bay. Towards the beach, long white marks curve and run obliquely, describing the changing edge of the surf. The sea is therefore continuous without being uniform. Its quieter upper area allows the hats and heads to stand out, while its more broken lower surface meets the beach in repeated strokes.

An offshore rock sits behind the middle of the group. Its dark upper surface and the opening beneath it form a compact interruption in the otherwise pale expanse. The arch is small, but the light through it is conspicuous. The rock also places a darker horizontal shape between the child and the woman in white. It connects these areas visually while remaining distant from both figures.

Sorolla gives the shoreline a different rhythm from the promenade. The beach and surf sweep diagonally through the picture; the figures rise vertically from the foreground. The cliff edge and patches of grass add further oblique lines. The painting’s width might have produced a flat row of walkers, but these crossing directions continually lead the eye into depth. Looking across the group also becomes a way of looking down towards the shore and out over the bay.

Long shadows anchor the figures to their narrow patch of land. Beneath María, a dark trail reaches towards the lower edge. On the right, looping and broken lines extend from the feet and skirts over the uneven ground. They contrast with the broad light areas of the dresses, giving the foreground a drawn, angular character. The figures’ upper bodies are surrounded by air and water; their feet belong to this much rougher surface.

Open air and shelter at Biarritz

A useful comparison is Sorolla’s Beach of Biarritz, where three seated women gather inside a striped beach shelter. There, the dark interior and the close grouping compress the space around the figures. A broad striped support dominates the left side, and the pale clothes are surrounded by warm shadow. In Lighthouse Walk, the figures are upright, more widely spaced, and outlined by open water. The comparison makes the different uses of seaside clothing especially clear: one picture folds the figures into an enclosure; the other distributes them across a view.

Both compositions make fabric an important part of the setting. On the beach, the shelter defines where people sit and how light reaches them. On the elevated path, hats, a parasol and a scarf create smaller areas of shade and moving contours around individual bodies. The sea need not dominate every passage for the location to remain present. Coastal leisure takes shape through these arrangements of people and the things they carry or wear.

Fundación MAPFRE’s Sorolla and America exhibition dossier placed Lighthouse Walk at Biarritz among the artist’s sophisticated resort scenes, in contrast with his paintings of boys bathing at Valencia.^[2] Here that distinction is visible in the relationship to the water. The walkers remain above it. Clothing, accessories and the path establish the terms of their encounter with the shore, while the broad bay remains an expansive background to their outing.

From Biarritz to Boston

The painting’s title appears in the Hispanic Society of America’s 1909 New York catalogue as entry 293, Paseo del Faro, Biarritz, translated there as Lighthouse Walk, Biarritz.^[3] The Spanish title places the emphasis on the promenade associated with the lighthouse. In the composition, the most commanding landmarks are the offshore rock, the sloping shore and the open horizon; the figures supply the nearer points through which we read that landscape.

Its purchase followed the American exhibition tour. Peter Chardon Brooks reserved the picture during the exhibitions and completed the purchase after the tour closed in May 1909. It later passed to his daughter, Eleanor Brooks Saltonstall, who gave it to the Museum of Fine Arts in 1922, as part of the Peter Chardon Brooks Memorial Collection.^[1] The painting thus reached Boston first through a private collector and subsequently through a museum gift, sixteen years after the summer represented on its surface.

The broad landscape remains accessible through small, precise interruptions. A red jacket stands against water; the pale scarf extends into an opening; a parasol separates a shaded face from the brightness above it. Sorolla holds these details within a view wide enough for the eye to keep moving. The distant rock remains steady beyond the walkers, while clothing and shadows give the foreground its changing pace.
