Girl with Loose Hair and Tulips by Alphonse Mucha
A young woman sits turned away, her loose dark hair falling toward an exposed shoulder. Red tulips appear near the lower edge. A photograph of the 2024 Hôtel de Caumont Mucha exhibition shows this same work beside a label naming it Fille aux cheveux lâchés et aux tulipes, 1920, oil on canvas.[1] Those first-hand exhibition details support the local title, date and medium. They do not establish the painting's present owner or its measurements.

An inward portrait
The woman does not meet the viewer's gaze. Her head bends down and toward the right, while the broad sweep of a pale garment wraps around her body. Mucha builds a quiet composition from that turn. Dark hair, pale cloth and warm background each form a large area, with the tulips providing small, bright accents below.
The local image is only 400 pixels wide, so close details are softened. Still, its main relationships remain legible: a turned figure, a curved shoulder, folds of fabric and the flowers. The tulips are not a decorative border surrounding her as plants do in some of Mucha's 1890s panels. They sit near the figure within a painted interior or shallow setting. This difference helps the work read as a painting rather than a printed floral allegory.
The pose allows several emotional readings. It may feel reflective, private or tired, depending on where a viewer focuses. The image itself does not identify the sitter or explain her thoughts. A responsible description can attend to the direction of her gaze and the arrangement of colour without turning those possibilities into a biography.
What the exhibition label establishes
A visitor photograph from the 2024 Hôtel de Caumont exhibition shows both the painting and its label.[1] The pictured composition matches the inherited local splash: the woman, loose hair, pale garment and red tulips align. The label gives the French title, 1920, and oil on canvas. Caumont's exhibition page confirms the show and its collaboration with the Mucha Foundation.[2] That is stronger evidence than an unsourced art-print listing, but it is still not an owning institution's object catalogue.
A later Korean exhibition adds a second, more specific published record. The Hyundai's 2025 account of Alphonse Mucha: The Artist as Visionary captions this painting in both Korean and English as a 1920 oil on canvas measuring 76.8 × 66.9 cm, with the credit “Mucha Trust 2025.”[4] This independently published exhibition caption supports a physical size that the earlier visitor photograph could not supply. Its credit identifies the source of rights information, but does not by itself establish the current owning institution or the canvas's full provenance.
The English title also has a publication trail before these exhibitions. Sandra Forty's 2011 book Mucha lists Girl with Loose Hair and Tulips as plate 73 in its published contents.[5] This establishes that the title was circulating in an art book at least thirteen years before the Caumont display. The accessible contents do not give an owner, accession number, sitter or dimensions, so the book cannot settle those object-history questions. Its value here is bibliographic: it connects the English title to the later French and Korean exhibition labels without treating a reproduction catalogue as a collection record.
The French and Korean presentations show that the painting continued to circulate in exhibitions well beyond Mucha's lifetime. Their records agree on the 1920 date and oil medium while using translated titles for the same work. The Hyundai describes its wider exhibition as including 143 works and 18 oil paintings selected from the Mucha Trust family collection.[4] That exhibition-level statement does not by itself identify the lender or current owner of this particular canvas. Neither exhibition text identifies the sitter or explains why Mucha chose tulips; commercial reproduction pages cannot supply those missing facts.
Mucha was still painting long after the Paris advertising designs that made him famous. This 1920 work offers a different scale of attention from a poster: it asks the viewer to linger over posture, fabric and restrained flowers rather than read a product name. That comparison is about visible format, not a claim that he abandoned design work.
A painting within a wider career
Caumont presented its Mucha exhibition from 17 November 2023 to 24 March 2024, in collaboration with the Mucha Foundation. Its account says that approximately 120 works traced changes in his practice across posters, advertising, interior decoration, theatre, photography and painting.[2] The museum specifically drew attention to paintings that are rarely shown, placing them beside the familiar Sarah Bernhardt posters and decorative panels. This matters for Girl with Loose Hair and Tulips: it was exhibited as part of a career broader than the commercially printed images that often stand for Mucha as a whole. The exhibition's general discussion of Symbolism and allegory, however, is not an object label assigning a particular allegorical meaning to these tulips.
The date on the painting's label places it in a busy period. The Mucha Foundation records an initial Prague exhibition of five Slav Epic canvases in 1919 and a display of the series at the Art Institute of Chicago in 1920.[3] It also records Mucha designing Czechoslovak banknotes after the republic's formation. Those projects give a concrete sense of the different formats he was working across around 1920: monumental historical painting, public design and, as this canvas demonstrates, smaller figure painting. They do not prove where or why he painted this particular woman. A chronology can situate an object without becoming its provenance.
The medium and size sharpen that distinction. At 76.8 × 66.9 cm, as reported by The Hyundai, this is a portable oil canvas rather than one of the enormous Slav Epic compositions.[4] It also differs materially from the colour lithographs produced in multiples for walls and advertisements. Oil paint does not by itself make the subject more personal, nor does the word “girl” in a translated title make the picture a named portrait. No accessible exhibition record identifies a commission, model or original setting. The strongest reading is therefore of what the documented object actually offers: a figure, flowers, an intimate format and a date amid Mucha's continuing work in several media.
Looking again
Follow the fall of hair to the shoulder, then the folds of cloth down toward the tulips. The red flowers punctuate an otherwise muted scene. The French and Korean exhibition texts give the painting a 1920 date and oil medium; the Korean caption adds dimensions of 76.8 × 66.9 cm. Its present holding and original commission remain open.[1][4]
