Modigliani is best remembered as a figurative artist who had a unique style that many appreciated both then and now.

Modigliani prints provide excellent reproductions of original paintings by Italian artist Amedeo Modigiliani was was an artist that spent most of his career in France in the early 20th century. The skills of this talented artist meant he was able to get the qualities of each individual across to the viewer through his painting. Amedeo Modigliani received his training as a young man in Florence, which is famous for it's influence on the art world dating back to the early renaissance. Upon completion of his training the artist moved to France with a new found confidence and felt the time was right to put his energies into establishing his artistic reputation. Paris seemed the ideal location to do this and that's where he headed.

Whilst in Paris Modigliani spent a lot of time at Le Bateau-Lavoir in Montmartre where he found an exciting variety of artistic influences available with likeminded individuals who had moved here for exactly the same reasons. This area in Paris had for many generations held a reputation as a breeding ground for innovative artists and has since continued this. During his time here Modigliani spent time with the likes of Picasso, Severini and Juan Gris who themselves were at the forefront of contemporary arts.

Following on from the hugely successful portrait paintings there were also many exceptional sculptures from the artist too, including Head of a Woman, Head and Rose Caryatid. Modigliani would tackle similar topics in his sculpture as he did in his oil paintings, namely figurative portraits. He remains best remembered for his oil paintings, though, probably because he produced many more of these and also it is a medium which normally gets more attention. Amedeo Modigliani was a complicated character who struggled throughout his life with alcohol addiction which was a problem fueled by his own imbalance of mind that both inspired and influenced his artistic career. Many artists have followed similar troubled routes, most famously being Vincent Van Gogh who shared a great level of innovation like Modigliani.

One moment where the artist underlined his mental instability was when he destroyed many of his early paintings as he felt that were produced as a time when he was a "bourgeois" which he had attempted to distance himself from later on as a result of his new experiences within France. During Modigliani's time in Paris he befriended Paul Alexandre who held excellent connections around the city which helped the artist to gain impressive commissions despite working in such self-imposed humble surroundings. The 1909 oil painting portrait of Baroness Marguerite de Hasse de Villiers is one example of how the relationship gave opportunities to the artist. Sadly the Baroness did not pay for that particular painting in the end perhaps because of the accuracy and honesty of the artist in capturing the arrogance of his subject.

In the early days of Modigliani's time in Paris he enjoyed taking a style which drew on some of his inspirations unashamedly which included the likes of Toulouse-Lautrec, Munch and Paul Cezanne. It was only later that he consciously strove to differentiate himself from all that had gone before, even those whom he had rated highly as artists. This switching of view was constant for Modigliani throughout his life and is a good example of someone who was never entirely comfortable within himself or what work he was producing. Amedeo Modigliani was an interesting character who pursued experimentation with sculpture despite never having had any real training with this art medium. Further more the artist chose to directly select stone and marble as his material for sculpture without any interest in plaster, modelling and clay that were normal choices for mainstream sculptors such as Auguste Rodin. Typically within painting those who have had no training and relied entirely on natural talent have used very unique styles and the same can be said about Modigliani and his sculptures which have his stamp all over them.

In 1911 Modigliani showed careful thought in producing several different sculptures which were supposed to be presented as a series together, and so each individual piece should not be judged by itself. There was also great attention to detail from this artist who would carefully select suitable lighting to give the right mood to this series of sculptures. For this set he prefered a dimmed view that almost had a relgious feel. Livorno, Italy-born Modigliani is yet another famous Jewish artist with this religion responsible for contributing countless artists amongst the world's finest of the past 200 years. It is not entirely clear why this is the case, perhaps though a strong upbringing on a sound financial base offers a good opportunity for creatives to follow their ideas rather than being preoccuppied with the necessities of daily life that most people have to deal with.

Some have portrayed the influences on Modigliani to be the likes of some Art Nouveau painters, of which Alphonse Mucha was the major figure. Henri Toulouse-Lautrec plus traditonal African sculpture techniques and mannerism are also seen as other attributors to the artist's final technique although once he had finally received all of these external ideas he was then to decide that it was necessary to do all he could to distance himself from what had gone before in the art world and create an entirely unique look in all hi future art. It is a great sadness that an artist as talented as Modigliani was taken from the world aged just 35 but it is at least pleasing to see the huge contribution that the artist made during this short period. After contracting Tuberculosis aged 16 it was this disease that was to eventually claim his life, probably exacerbated by his truly extreme lifestyle which must have had a negative impact on both his physical and mental state. This excesses most famously included women, drugs and drink as he lived somewhat of a celebrity life to the full. There were however inevitable down periods where he would desire a highly secluded time to himself.

Jeanne Hébuterne is the most famous of all Modigliani's models and she was introduced to him as a 19 year old art student by Russin sculptor Chana Orloff. Hébuterne had previously posed for Tsuguharu Foujita so it seemed a fair idea to connect her with an artist building a high reputation for specialising in skilled portrait paintings. The model was to receive massive criticism from her Roman-Catholic raised family for spending this time with a Jewish man who seemed of ill-repute. However this did little to deter her from her passion which was for spending time with this engrossing character and soon they lived together, leading to explosive scenes.

The influences on his sculpture were seemingly African but also some believe Cambodian. Head in 1911 is one example of this. Certainly, after close inspection there is a native style to these pieces which remains consistent despite his lack of training in or true understanding of scuplture. Native african or asian sculpture is something that continues to impress Europeans many centuries since they first were fortunate enough to first experience it with their own eyes. Amedeo Modigliani was someone who would never be a recommended partner if thinking rationally because of his typically unstable artistic character and constant switches in outlook but this could not disuade countless women who were highly attracted to both his creative mind and the celebrity status that this eventually brought. Added to this was his handsome appearance which wasn't entirely ruined by his extreme social life and it's easy to understand the attraction that many women felt.
