Mountains by Franz Marc

One of Franz Marc's most prestigious paintings, "Landschaft ", later renamed "Gebirge", is by far the most multi-style painting done by Franz Marc.

Using a combination and influences of Cubism, Orphism, and Futurism, this piece of art was created in 1911. Later repainted in 1912 due to new inspirations after visiting Robert Delaunay in Paris, Franz frames a period in his life where he strives to seek a divine awakening.

Many artists of the time period were seeking to attain a state of spirituality. Marc was one of the artists who tried to attain a state of enlightenment; as framed, the stepping stones of the mountain facing to the audience and reaches all the way to the orange sun at the summit puts a sense of wanting to go towards a higher earth, or a higher realm.

In this painting, "Gebirge", Futurism can be seen through the abstract thrusting prisms that reach the sky, and suggestion of Cubism comes from fractures abstract shapes that are scattered throughout the painting.

The style of painting, Orphist, is also contrasted by the intense hues and abstraction in the contrast of the coloring planes, which when combines show a surface of intense vibrant colors.

Now held in the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, it is a piece still treasured and reminiscent of an era where art was a form to convey emotions.

Painted throughout 1911-1912, the landscape portrait shows the wide range of skill and styles that Marc Franz was able to use and blend together to create works that would be forever praised.
