A Gorge in the Mountains (Kauterskill Clove): Introduction

Sanford Robinson Gifford’s A Gorge in the Mountains makes an immense hollow in the Catskills appear filled with light. A rocky ledge occupies the foreground, a tall tree rises along the left edge, and wooded slopes descend toward water far below. Above them, the sun dissolves the distinction between sky and distant land. The painting gives the valley breadth while asking the eye to travel downward into its depth.

Painted in 1862, the large oil on canvas belongs to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Its current title includes the historical place-name spelling Kauterskill Clove . A hunter and dog provide a small human presence, easily overlooked beside the illuminated landscape. Their scale helps explain the picture’s effect: the viewer can recognize a place inhabited and traversed by people while feeling how much exceeds the reach of a single body. [1]

The work also has a complicated history of titles. It has been confused with another Gifford painting of the clove and catalogued under a waterfall name. Looking closely at the picture, its studies and its early reception reveals a carefully developed composition whose apparent simplicity conceals considerable selection. [2]

Notes and sources
  • The Wilderness. Small travelers and a canoe occupy an extensive lake-and-mountain scene. The title does not establish an uninhabited place. [3]

  • Twilight in the Catskills. Damaged or withered foreground trees contrast with luminous distance. Yale proposes a Civil War reading, not a fixed symbolic code. [4]

  • A Gorge in the Mountains (Kauterskill Clove) (current article). A dark lookout and framing tree direct attention into a luminous Catskill valley; the small hunter and dog establish scale. [1]

  • A Coming Storm. Cloud and remaining light organize Lake George. The band marks initial execution in 1863, not continuous work through the 1880 revision. [5]

  • Hunter Mountain, Twilight. A broad clearing, farmhouse and cattle sit below the ridge. The cut ground makes human alteration part of the scene. [6]

  • A Home in the Wilderness. The cabin, canoe and Mount Hayes setting develop drawings and an oil study into a larger inhabited landscape. [7] [2]

  • Isola Bella in Lago Maggiore. A Maggiore subject developed from recollection, including a study painted at Bellagio on Lake Como. [8] [2]

  • Ruins of the Parthenon. The 1880 canvas develops the detailed Acropolis drawing of 1869, with further decisions about sky and foreground. [9] [2]

A valley organized around light

The sun sits high above the distant hills, slightly to the right of the picture’s center. Its pale disk is visible, but much of its surrounding brightness has no sharply defined boundary. Yellow light spreads through the upper part of the composition and into the folds of the valley. Looking outward becomes a process of distinguishing forms within that brightness.

Gifford gives the foreground a different character. Rock, tree trunks and broken branches are comparatively substantial, with darker divisions and more pronounced changes of surface. The nearest ledge seems available to touch. Beyond it, the sides of the gorge become progressively less definite, until the most distant land is scarcely separable from the atmosphere.

This progression establishes distance without relying on an uninterrupted path that can be followed into the scene. The spectator stands above a drop. The view offers access through sight while withholding the easy physical passage that a road or gently receding field would provide. The eye crosses a space that the body could not cross in the same way.

The painting’s upright format strengthens that experience. Its considerable height accommodates both the rocky descent and the open sky. A broad view might have emphasized a succession of mountain profiles; here, the hollow itself becomes the principal event. Near and far remain connected by light even where the terrain separates them.

A tree between near ground and sky

The near tree rises from the rocky ledge into the pale sky. Its uneven branches and small openings in the foliage make a distinct silhouette beside the softer distant slopes.

The hunter and dog

The small hunter and dog are subdued within the dark rocks at the lower left. Their discovery gives the ledge a bodily scale without identifying the hunter as a particular literary character.

Water at the bottom of the gorge

A narrow stretch of water appears deep inside the wooded hollow. Its small pale shapes help carry attention downward from the overlook through successive slopes.

The sun and the fading ridges

The sun has a pale disk, while its surrounding glow spreads into the distant terrain. Compare those nearly dissolved ridges with the firmer outlines of the foreground tree.

The foreground ledge and its trees

The large tree at the left is an important guide through the picture. Its trunk begins within the rocky foreground and rises toward the sky, carrying the eye past several changes of distance. The spreading upper branches then turn inward, partly enclosing the expanse beyond. The tree belongs to the near ground but reaches into the area where the painting becomes most luminous.

Its foliage is neither a solid screen nor an evenly distributed ornament. Small openings allow light to pass between the leaves. Against the sky, the irregular silhouette supplies a measure of specificity that the distant slopes have lost. Gifford thus places clearly articulated growth beside an atmosphere that softens almost everything farther away.

Below, the ledge projects across the lower left. Its illuminated upper surface suggests a possible standing place, while the broken ground beneath it makes that position feel precarious. Angular rocks, roots and fragments give the foreground weight. They prevent the broad golden atmosphere from becoming an entirely disembodied effect.

The contrast is more than a division between dark and light. The near ground contains changes that can be examined individually: a branch, an edge, a rough face of rock. Farther away, the trees are gathered into larger masses. The picture gradually changes the kind of attention it asks for, from recognition of separate things to contemplation of a shared atmosphere.

Finding the hunter and dog

The hunter and dog are close to the foreground, yet their low placement and subdued color keep them from claiming the scene immediately. Discovering them changes the scale of the surrounding rocks and trees. What first appeared to be a modest shelf becomes a substantial position above a deep valley.

Their smallness also changes the relation between viewer and landscape. Without them, the gorge might be read primarily as a pattern of slopes and light. The figures introduce a bodily measure. They suggest the experience of arriving at an overlook, pausing and looking outward, while remaining minor within the whole arrangement.

Kevin J. Avery’s catalogue discussion considers a possible association with Washington Irving’s Rip Van Winkle . That is a proposed literary connection, rather than a secure identification of the hunter as Irving’s character. A hunter and dog in the Catskills could invite such an association for nineteenth-century viewers, but the painting does not require a specific narrative to make its scale intelligible. [2]

The distinction matters when interpreting the work. A named story can encourage a viewer to search for an episode, a character or a moral. The actual arrangement leaves more room for the act of looking itself. The human pair gives the landscape an accessible point of entry without explaining everything that the expanse might mean.

From drawings to an exhibition painting

Gifford’s treatments of the clove grew through drawings, oil studies and more than one finished picture. The 2003 retrospective catalogue places the Metropolitan canvas beside a signed 1861 oil sketch and smaller 1862 works. These related objects document a developing subject, with changes of proportion and emphasis rather than a single view transferred mechanically from one support to another. [2]

The movement from horizontal observation to a more upright composition was particularly significant. A wide prospect can distribute attention among adjoining ridges and stretches of terrain. Narrowing the view and increasing its height concentrates attention on the descending valley, the foreground platform and the rise of the tree. The format itself becomes part of Gifford’s interpretation of the site.

The studies also make it possible to understand detail as a choice. The tree, the shape of the ledge and the apparent reach of the farther landscape were elements to be tested and adjusted. The finished painting’s coherence depends on how those elements serve one another. Its convincing atmosphere does not mean that every feature remained fixed throughout the working process.

These distinctions help explain why Gifford’s smaller pictures deserve attention alongside the large canvas. A study can preserve an earlier balance of forms or a different decision about distance. It need not be judged only by what it lacks compared with the final version. The smaller work records a stage at which other solutions remained possible.

Avery’s comparison identifies a particularly revealing sequence in the foreground. Intermediate studies give the tree a stronger, more assertive shape and place two figures on the rocky platform. In the large canvas, Gifford reduced and simplified the tree, while the hunter and dog became difficult to distinguish among the rocks. Changes to the foreground therefore worked toward a different hierarchy of attention. The nearest objects still anchor the view, but they compete less strongly with the sun. [2]

The lower landscape was also developed rather than simply enlarged. Avery describes adjustments to the ledges, a softening and multiplication of their descending forms, and the introduction of a lake and cabin at the bottom of the gorge. These decisions helped establish the valley’s bowl-like space. They also supplied small points of recognition within its depth, allowing the eye to find its way through broad masses of shadow and foliage.

The sequence makes the painting’s quietness more interesting. Its seemingly effortless balance was reached through decisions about what should become clearer, smaller or less conspicuous. Gifford did not achieve unity by eliminating all detail. He made selected details act together, giving the nearer ledge, the distant water and the surrounding slopes different roles within a single arrangement.

A familiar place transformed

Kaaterskill Clove was a subject with an established artistic and literary presence. Gifford returned to the Catskills repeatedly, and the region was close to his family home in Hudson. The gorge was therefore part of an accumulated familiarity, rather than a discovery made during a single isolated excursion. Avery relates that sustained attachment to the artist’s repeated reworking of the subject. [2]

That familiarity allowed selection. The painting gathers the gorge into a concentrated visual experience, emphasizing the illuminated slopes, the distant cascade and the separation between the foreground ledge and the valley floor. It gives little sense of the practical arrangements through which visitors reached and used such scenery. The landscape appears expansive and absorbing, with attention directed toward its forms and atmosphere.

It is useful to keep a photograph of the region beside the painting without expecting an exact match. A modern view can clarify the enclosing terrain and the contrast between wooded slopes and open sky. It cannot by itself reconstruct Gifford’s position, the appearance of the site in 1862 or the adjustments made in the studio. The supporting east-facing photograph shows a different direction from the painting’s westward prospect.

The geography should likewise be treated with care. The view’s relationship to the clove is secure, but the history of its titles shows how readily a familiar regional name can become attached to the wrong object or feature. The distant waterfall contributes to the recession into the valley; the painting’s effect can be understood without making an unqualified identification of that cascade.

The Catskills during the Civil War

The painting belongs to the years of Gifford’s military service. His return to familiar Catskill subjects during this period had practical as well as emotional circumstances. The region was accessible from his family home, while service restricted his freedom to travel. Avery’s discussion brings these circumstances into relation without making the landscape a straightforward illustration of a military event. [2]

A letter written from Baltimore in July 1862 supplies a particularly revealing contrast. Responding to friends’ accounts of their Catskill outings, Gifford described imagining himself among the mountain cloves before a sentry’s challenge returned him to the limits of military life. Quoted by Avery, the letter gives evidence of his longing for the region, rather than a complete explanation of the finished canvas. [2]

The same catalogue records that the gorge painting was shown in Gifford’s Tenth Street studio alongside Baltimore, 1862—Twilight , a work with an explicitly military setting. That conjunction helps place his practice in the period. Landscape painting and military experience were present within the same career and, at times, the same studio display.

Viewers may find the radiant openness of the gorge especially affecting in that context. Yet its light should not be assigned a single political meaning merely because it was painted in wartime. The distinction between documented circumstances and interpretation leaves the picture available to more than one response while preserving what is known about its making.

What early viewers saw

Contemporary responses show how strongly Gifford’s atmosphere impressed observers. The catalogue gathers descriptions of the picture that emphasize sunlight, depth and the unusual decision to make a great depression in the landscape the central subject. Writers tried to explain the experience of looking into a valley as something as compelling as looking toward a mountain. [2]

Such descriptions are valuable because they suggest that the painting’s distinctive organization was recognized early. Its subject was not simply a picturesque location. The handling of visibility, the relation between near detail and far indistinctness, and the broad influence of the sun were central to how it was received.

Admiration did not prevent criticism of Gifford’s approach more generally. Some observers welcomed the emotional and atmospheric intensity of his pictures; others regarded the recurring haze as a mannerism. Franklin Kelly’s overview traces that disagreement through the artist’s career. It shows that softness and unity could be understood either as accomplished selection or as a retreat from sufficiently particular description. [2]

The disagreement remains a productive way to look. Following the nearest rock and tree tests how much specificity the picture contains. Looking back toward the sunlight tests how willingly Gifford allows other forms to dissolve. His effect depends on the balance between those kinds of attention, rather than on making every part equally explicit.

Titles, versions and a persistent confusion

The name A Gorge in the Mountains has particular historical value. The catalogue connects it with early descriptions of the 1862 canvas, helping distinguish the Metropolitan picture from another, later Kauterskill Clove . The latter was exhibited in 1863 and is not securely located today. Their close subject matter and related effects encouraged confusion even among contemporary reviewers. [2]

One writer treated the later exhibition picture as though it were the canvas already admired in the studio. That error matters because it can make a review appear to describe the wrong object. An enthusiastic account of a Catskill gorge cannot automatically be assigned to the Metropolitan painting merely because the subject and artist agree.

The 1881 memorial catalogue introduces another naming problem. Its entry 276 lists the Jesup painting under Kauterskill Falls . The historical title helps trace the object’s documentation, but it does not turn the Metropolitan canvas into a separate close view of that waterfall. Titles can be part of an object’s history while remaining imperfect guides to what it depicts. [10]

The modern title retains both an early descriptive name and the familiar regional designation. It is useful to read those words together: one identifies the formal subject, a gorge, while the other places it within the Catskill landscape. Keeping the 1862 canvas, its studies and the unlocated 1863 picture distinct preserves the choices Gifford made within a recurring subject.

The Jesup collection and the Metropolitan Museum

The painting’s provenance links it with Morris K. Jesup, whose collection supplied the work to the Metropolitan through Maria DeWitt Jesup’s bequest. The museum’s credit line dates that bequest to 1914. Its accession number, 15.30.62, identifies the particular canvas discussed here and distinguishes it from the numerous other Catskill subjects by Gifford. [1]

The catalogue’s exhibition history also shows that the picture circulated through more than one setting. It was seen in the Tenth Street studio, in an Artists’ Fund Society exhibition and in later loan displays. Those settings brought an apparently remote valley into the social world of artists, patrons and urban spectators. [2]

That movement between landscape and city is part of the work’s history. Gifford observed and remembered mountain scenery, developed it through studies and studio decisions, and presented the result to viewers who encountered the place through paint. The picture’s absorbing atmosphere was made for such encounters, including the sustained scrutiny that its substantial canvas permits.

Looking beside other Gifford landscapes

Twilight in the Catskills offers a useful comparison. Its panoramic format, red sky and broken foreground trees produce a more immediately dramatic effect. In A Gorge in the Mountains , warmth spreads more continuously through the scene, and depth gathers beneath a large expanse of light. The same region supports distinctly different decisions about format and emotional emphasis. [2]

Hunter Mountain, Twilight changes the relation between human activity and distance. A clearing and farm occupy the foreground beneath a broad mountain profile. Here, the hunter and dog are much less conspicuous, and the hollow of the gorge organizes the view. Comparing the two makes the variety within Gifford’s atmospheric landscapes easier to recognize.

The drawings and sketchbooks provide another route into that variety. They remind us that a painting’s luminous coherence could grow from small records, trials and recollections. Returning from those working materials to the large gorge canvas brings the essential decision back into focus: Gifford made many separate observations serve the experience of one expansive, sun-filled place.
