Hagar and Ishmael by Benjamin West: Introduction

A child leans against his mother while she looks up towards an angel. A water bottle lies near their feet, connecting bodily exhaustion with the promise of rescue. Benjamin West painted Hagar and Ishmael in 1776 and substantially reworked it in 1803. The surviving canvas, now in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, brings those two moments in his career into one object. [1]

Its history also raises a question about artistic revision. When West tried to exhibit the changed painting again, the Royal Academy's rule against repeat submissions collided with his claim that the alterations had effectively made it a new picture.

The wilderness episode in Genesis

The story comes from Genesis 21. After Sarah demands that Hagar and her son be excluded from Abraham's household, they leave with bread and water. Their supply runs out in the wilderness of Beersheba. Hagar places the child under a shrub and sits some distance away because she cannot bear to watch him die. Her distress is answered by an angel's call from heaven. [2]

The episode then turns towards survival. In the King James translation, the angel tells Hagar to “fear not,” instructing her to lift up the child and promising him a future. God opens her eyes to a well; she fills the bottle and gives him water. The vessel in West's foreground therefore belongs to the practical circumstances of the narrative: exhausted supplies and the possibility of replenishment. [2]

This is distinct from Hagar's earlier encounter with an angel in Genesis 16. West's subject concerns the endangered mother and son after their expulsion. His close grouping brings human support and divine intervention together, allowing the viewer to encounter the story at the point when despair is being interrupted.

Annotated details from Hagar and Ishmael by Benjamin West

Details from HAGAR AND ISHMAEL

Follow Hagar’s upward look to the angel, then return to the bottle and the child’s need for water.

1

A face turned towards the angel

Hagar raises her face towards the angel while remaining close to Ishmael. The turn of her head links the exhausted lower group with the arriving figure above.

The angel’s pointing arm

The angel extends an arm towards the brighter sky at the left. The gesture and streaming fabric carry attention outwards, contrasting with the downward weight of the child below.

The bottle beside the child

The dark water bottle lies low beside Ishmael’s feet and the pale cloth. Its unassuming place in the foreground connects the promise of rescue with the bodily need for water.

Three figures and a chain of attention

Ishmael occupies the lower part of the canvas. His exposed chest and loosely arranged limbs make him appear vulnerable, while the angle of his head leads the eye towards his mother's body. Her arm supports him at the shoulder. Their physical connection makes the child dependent on her even as her attention turns upwards.

Hagar's head provides the next movement. Her face rises away from the boy, following the angel above. The gesture does not remove her from her maternal task: one arm continues to hold him, and the other rests across her raised knee. West makes looking and supporting simultaneous actions.

The angel enters from the upper right, extending an arm across the brighter sky. Its direction carries attention beyond the immediate group towards the open space at the left. The movement contrasts with the downward weight of the child. One figure seems barely able to sustain itself; another arrives with the energy of an intervention.

Together, the bodies make a rising sequence without forming a rigid line. The child leads into the mother, the mother looks towards the angel, and the angel's gesture opens the composition outwards. The viewer can follow that sequence while returning to the hand that keeps mother and son connected.

Drapery, landscape and the bottle

Colour separates the figures and also joins them. Pale fabric crosses Ishmael's body, while yellow and red folds gather around the lower group. Hagar's red drapery gives her seated form a broad presence. Above, the angel's green-blue clothing and streaming warm-coloured fabric carry movement across the sky.

The folds have different tasks. Those around the boy soften the boundary between his body and his mother's support. The larger folds around Hagar establish weight and stability. The angel's fabric appears less settled, extending away from the body as part of its arrival. These differences help the three figures remain distinct within a closely connected arrangement.

The dark bottle at the bottom is a useful place to pause. It is smaller and less luminous than the faces, but its position near the child's feet returns attention to thirst and bodily need. The cloud-filled background supplies a setting for revelation; the ordinary container keeps that revelation attached to a situation in which water matters.

West does not need a crowded narrative to convey the episode. The relationship between three figures and one practical object carries much of its meaning. Like his Expulsion of Adam and Eve , the painting asks a small group of bodies and gestures to make a larger scriptural history visible.

Reworking the 1776 painting

The Met's 1994 systematic catalogue describes a substantial intervention when West regained the painting around 1803. He changed Hagar and Ishmael, replaced the angel, introduced new drapery and altered the background. The catalogue reports that radiographs confirmed the changes. These are published findings about the object, rather than a new technical examination of its surface. [3]

The distinction between dates is therefore essential. 1776 identifies the original painting and its first Royal Academy exhibition; 1803 identifies the later reworking. The visible canvas should not be treated as an untouched example of West's 1770s handling. Its figures and setting preserve the result of a return to an earlier work. [3]

This gives revision a different significance from a small correction made during initial execution. West reconsidered a composition after many years of further practice. The painting's history belongs to his technique as well as his chronology, demonstrating that a completed, exhibited work could remain open to renewed invention.

An Academy dispute and two later exhibitions

The revised picture was rejected when West submitted it in 1803 because it had already been exhibited. The detailed catalogue places the decision within a wider disagreement involving West, John Singleton Copley and the Academy's council. West argued that his extensive changes had made the work effectively new. The rule and the personal tensions both belong to the account; neither alone explains the whole dispute. [3]

The preceding disagreement concerned extra time granted to Copley for submitting his Knatchbull family portrait. West objected, and the permission was revoked. When Hagar subsequently arrived, Copley drew attention to its previous exhibition and the restriction on showing a work twice. The catalogue also recounts that West learned of the rejection through the newspapers before receiving official notification. The sequence helps explain why an administrative decision could become a public conflict involving authority, fairness and artistic reputation. [3]

The subsequent dates require care. The 1994 catalogue lists the painting at the Royal Academy in 1804, no. 211, and at the British Institution in 1806, no. 94. The current short online label compresses the controversy into an account ending in 1806. The detailed list provides the clearer institution-specific sequence: Academy return in 1804, followed by a different London exhibition in 1806. [3] [1]

The disagreement exposes a problem that survives beyond this particular case. Exhibition rules may identify a work through the physical canvas, while an artist may understand extensive revision as a renewed creation. West's case made that difference public. The question was not simply whether a painting had been finished, but whether changing it substantially entitled it to be presented again.

Ownership, loans and the Met

The catalogue records an initial purchase by Lord Cremorne, subsequent ownership elsewhere and West's reacquisition around 1803. After the artist's death, the picture passed through his sons’ 1829 sale and eventually came into the possession of the Seguin family. Possession did not always mean legal ownership: the catalogue explains that paintings were held as collateral for a loan. [3]

It also records the Met holding this painting on deposit from 1881 to 1923 and the resolution of title in 1923. This history prevents the beginning of its presence in the museum from being mistaken for an immediate outright acquisition. The current record retains the Maria DeWitt Jesup Fund, 1923 credit and accession 95.22.8. [3] [1]

The work consequently has several connected histories: a threatened child and his mother, an artist returning to an old composition, a contested exhibition and a long movement between possession and ownership. The image keeps the most immediate of these visible. Hagar holds the boy while looking towards a promise that changes what their present suffering can mean.

Benjamin West artworks and catalogue records

This directory combines identified works with the complete list in John Galt’s 1820 catalogue. Historical entries may group several works or record studies, copies and repeated versions. The entry numbers are modern finding aids; old spellings may be retained. Their titles and locations describe the 1820 account; they do not establish present ownership or a count of unique paintings. Dates and media are left unspecified where the evidence does not settle them. Later catalogue reports are labelled, and recto/verso records may describe two sides of one sheet. Linked articles provide references for the individual works they discuss. The historical list is Galt’s Appendix II, pages 216–234. [4] The labelled 1995 records follow the National Gallery of Art catalogue. [5] Additional object details come from the Gallery’s collection index. [6] The Pyrrhus study and related exhibited painting are documented in Christie’s catalogue. [7]

Frequently Asked Questions

Which Bible passage does the painting illustrate?

It illustrates Hagar and Ishmael's wilderness rescue in Genesis 21,following their expulsion from Abraham's household. It is distinct from Hagar's earlier angel encounter in Genesis 16. [2]

Was the painting made in 1776 or 1803?

Both dates matter. West painted the original in 1776 and substantially reworked it in 1803. The current Met record preserves that distinction. [1]

Why was it rejected for exhibition?

The Royal Academy had a rule against exhibiting the same work twice. West argued that his changes made it a new picture, producing a dispute over its renewed submission in 1803. [3]

Was its Academy return in 1804 or 1806?

The detailed 1994 catalogue lists the Royal Academy in 1804 and the British Institution in 1806. This precise sequence is more informative than the current short label's compressed account ending in 1806. [3] [1]

Why is the bottle important?

Genesis describes the loss of Hagar's water supply and the discovery of a well. The vessel links the scene's promise of help with the physical need that endangers the child. [2]

Reader Insights

Editorial prompt · Close Looking

Hagar continues to support Ishmael while turning towards the angel, bringing bodily care and a change of attention into one pose.

Editorial prompt · Comparison

The bottle gives the scriptural promise a practical context: water can determine whether the child survives.

Editorial prompt · Context

The painting's reworking raised a public question about whether a substantially revised canvas should count as a new work.
