Saul and the Witch of Endor by Benjamin West: Introduction
Benjamin West’s Saul and the Witch of Endor turns a biblical consultation into an encounter dominated by fear. Painted in 1777, the small oil belongs to the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art in Hartford, Connecticut, through the bequest of Clara Hinton Gould. [1] A white-cloaked apparition occupies the brightest part of the scene, while the king lies almost level with the ground. Around them, the other figures make the disturbing event visible through their reactions.

Why does Saul visit the woman at Endor?
In the biblical account, Saul disguises himself and travels by night with two men to consult a woman who can summon the dead. She fears a trap because Saul himself has prohibited such practices. He promises her safety and asks her to bring up the prophet Samuel. When the apparition appears, she recognises the disguised king. [2]
Saul seeks guidance because he faces war with the Philistines and has received no divine answer through prophets or dreams. Samuel’s response supplies no reassurance: Saul will lose his kingdom, and he and his sons face death. The consultation therefore reverses its intended purpose. An attempt to obtain help becomes a confrontation with an approaching end.
The king’s disguise also creates a reversal of power. He depends on someone whose activities his own authority has made dangerous. Her question about a trap gives her a reason for alarm before the apparition becomes the centre of attention. Reading that exchange complicates the familiar title’s emphasis on a witch: the woman is also a person trying to protect herself from the concealed ruler who has sought her out. [2]

Samuel’s mantle in engraved lines
Closely spaced lines describe the folds of Samuel’s pale mantle against the darker rock. The concealed face and outstretched arms retain their force without the oil painting’s colour: this is Martin’s engraved translation of West’s design.
The white mantle and the hidden face
Samuel’s mantle gives the apparition a strong outline while concealing much of the person within it. The head bends beneath the hood, and the arms extend outwards. His pale clothing contrasts sharply with the woman’s darker garments, the surrounding rock and the shadows behind the king. Recognition depends less on a fully described face than on the extraordinary presence of the draped body.
The Kunstmuseum Basel’s Ghosts: Visualizing the Supernatural booklet discusses West’s white-cloaked Samuel within a wider history of artists representing apparitions. It emphasises the opportunities such subjects offered for exploring atmosphere and the bewilderment of witnesses. [3] In West’s picture, the apparition’s brightness and the reactions around it work together: the unfamiliar sight acquires force through its effect on familiar human bodies.
The king and the frightened witnesses
Saul’s position establishes a striking difference in height. Samuel stands upright; the king’s head approaches the ground. One hand opens towards the apparition while the other rests against the floor. Richly coloured clothing spreads around him, giving his fallen body a broad presence across the foreground even as his posture removes the authority expected of a king.
At the upper right, the two companions recoil beside a bright vertical opening. The helmeted figure raises a hand across his face; the other draws close behind him. Their compressed arrangement contrasts with Samuel’s extended arms. Rather than examining the apparition calmly, they seem to protect themselves from it.
The woman remains at the left, closer to Samuel. Her broad hat and bent figure produce a different silhouette from his tall mantle. One hand rises beside her face, while the other holds a thin curved stick across her lap. West gives each participant a distinct response, allowing the eye to move around the encounter rather than stopping at its central spectacle.
Several moments brought into one scene
The biblical sequence distinguishes Saul’s bow in verse fourteen from his later collapse in verse twenty, after hearing Samuel’s warning. That later weakness also follows a day and night without food. [2] West brings the standing apparition, prostrate king and frightened witnesses into a single concentrated image. It should not be treated as a literal record of every action occurring simultaneously.
This compression gives the painting its immediate intelligibility. The king’s lowered body communicates the force of the warning without requiring a written account of the entire conversation. The contrast with Samuel remains visible before the viewer knows the precise order of the verses.

The Worcester Art Museum’s catalogue relates Saul and the Witch of Endor and King Lear in the Storm to West’s developing Romantic treatment of disturbing subjects. It identifies darkness and turbulent movement as important resources in his religious paintings, culminating in the much larger Death on the Pale Horse . [4]
The comparison reveals continuity across subjects drawn from different texts. West can make distress legible through a central figure and the people around him. In The Cave of Despair , contact offers the possibility of rescue. Here, the companions share the fear of an encounter whose message provides no escape.
A related drawing and a later engraving
The Morgan Library & Museum catalogues a related drawing in pen, brown ink, chalk and wash, measuring 199 × 317 mm. Its record also reports an 1812 watermark. [5] That detail cautions against assuming that every sheet described as a study must have preceded the 1777 painting. The record establishes a relationship with the subject, while leaving its precise place in West’s process uncertain.
The accompanying engraving is a separate object: R. I. Martin’s version after West, catalogued by the Wellcome Collection to 1811. Its title, biblical verse reference and Dublin publisher’s imprint remain visible below the image. [6] Without the oil’s colours, engraved lines carry the contrast between the pale mantle and dark surroundings. It offers a useful comparison of how the composition works in another medium.

The painting’s collection in Hartford
The Wadsworth’s Gothic Revival building opened in 1844, decades after West’s death. [7] Kenneth C. Zirkel’s photograph, taken on 21 August 2020, shows its stone towers, pointed entrance and neighbouring buildings. [8] This modern exterior gives the painting’s collection a physical setting; it does not show the biblical location or establish where the canvas is currently displayed inside.

What happens after the apparition?
The biblical narrative continues beyond the encounter that dominates West’s painting. In verses twenty-one to twenty-five, the woman notices Saul’s distress and urges him to eat. He initially refuses, but she and his companions persuade him. She then prepares a calf and unleavened bread; after the meal, Saul and his servants leave during the night. [9]
This later episode gives the woman a role beyond summoning an apparition. Having earlier feared the disguised king, she now provides food for the exhausted visitor. Her practical care cannot undo Samuel’s warning, but it changes the relationship between host and guest before his departure.
The meal is not shown in West’s composition. Reading it alongside the image clarifies the artist’s concentration on the moment of revelation and collapse. The wider story contains both supernatural fear and ordinary hospitality; the painting brings the former into the foreground through its brilliant mantle, lowered king and recoiling witnesses.
Benjamin West artworks and catalogue records
This directory combines identified works with the complete list in John Galt’s 1820 catalogue. Historical entries may group several works or record studies, copies and repeated versions. The entry numbers are modern finding aids; old spellings may be retained. Their titles and locations describe the 1820 account; they do not establish present ownership or a count of unique paintings. Dates and media are left unspecified where the evidence does not settle them. Later catalogue reports are labelled, and recto/verso records may describe two sides of one sheet. Linked articles provide references for the individual works they discuss. The historical list is Galt’s Appendix II, pages 216–234. [10] The labelled 1995 records follow the National Gallery of Art catalogue. [11] Additional object details come from the Gallery’s collection index. [12] The Pyrrhus study and related exhibited painting are documented in Christie’s catalogue. [13]
