Church Roncal Stairs

The steps in Joaquín Sorolla’s Church Roncal Stairs seem close enough to climb. Their uneven fronts fill the lower half of the painting, catching pink, gold and pale violet light. Above them, a heavy pier supports a vaulted passage; through its opening appears a green hillside and a small, dark figure. The picture gives the approach to the church a strong physical presence. We meet its worn surfaces before we reach its shelter.

The Museo Sorolla identifies the building as the church of San Esteban in El Roncal and dates the painting to 22–28 August 1912. Its current Spanish title is Subida a la iglesia de San Esteban de El Roncal, or Ascent to the Church of San Esteban in El Roncal. The canvas measures 50.2 × 37.2 centimetres and belongs to the museum’s founding bequest.^[1] Within that modest upright format, the staircase feels surprisingly substantial: it spreads almost across the full width of the view.

Looking up the staircase

Sorolla places us below the landing. There is little foreground in which to stand back and take stock of the whole building. The first broad surfaces arrive at the bottom edge, and successive steps lift the eye towards the passage. Their edges run across the composition, but they are neither perfectly straight nor mechanically repeated. Some are interrupted by deep notches; others slope or disappear into patches of light. A dark recess near the lower centre gives the climb an especially tangible irregularity.

The eye can follow two different routes. One proceeds step by step, reading the bright tops against their darker fronts. The other moves more quickly along the diagonal boundary at the left, where the low wall rises towards the massive upright pier. These movements meet at the top of the flight. The architecture provides a destination while the broken rhythm of the stairs slows our arrival. Much of the painting’s interest lies in that interval between seeing where to go and noticing what lies underfoot.

The landing also divides the picture. Beneath it, the stone spreads towards us in broad, shallow bands. Above it, the space opens backwards beneath the vault. This change from horizontal layers to a receding passage makes the painting more than a close view of masonry. Sorolla sets one kind of depth against another: the upward movement of the climb and the inward movement of the covered space. The far opening remains visible throughout, keeping the route legible despite the large pier that occupies so much of the upper left.

The cropping adds to the sensation of proximity. The pier continues beyond the top, and the vault is cut by the upper and right edges. We cannot inspect a complete façade from a comfortable distance. Instead, separate pieces of the structure press against the frame. The picture has the concentrated character of a view found from a particular position, with the building extending around and above the portion we can see.

Stone in warm and cool colour

At first glance, the stairs and pier seem to share a warm pinkish gold. Looking longer reveals how much Sorolla varies that colour. Pale cream strokes sit beside salmon patches; lavender bands interrupt the warmer surfaces; small dark marks sharpen a broken edge or a joint. A step can be warm across its front and cool along its top. The colour makes each change of plane readable. The museum records oil on coarse canvas over grey priming.^[1] In the image, the strongest suggestion of roughness comes from the broken edges and contrasting strokes.

The broad pier is handled differently from the stairs. It forms a comparatively continuous vertical area, with scattered suggestions of joints and individual stones. Its sunlit face gives the eye a place to settle after the fragmented foreground. At its right edge, a narrow dark strip cuts down towards the landing. That abrupt boundary turns the pier into a screen between the exposed staircase and the shaded passage beyond. Light and darkness meet decisively along it, giving a clear sense of the pier’s thickness.

A patch of blue at the upper left intensifies the yellow and orange beside it. Lower down, the dark green beyond the low wall introduces another cooler area. These small glimpses around the masonry prevent the building from becoming an isolated arrangement of warm shapes. They establish open air at its edges, while the distant vegetation gives the covered passage an outdoor destination. Even under the vault, we remain aware of the landscape.

The painting is particularly rewarding at the places where an edge dissolves. Some of the lower stones are separated by a firm dark line; elsewhere, neighbouring surfaces merge in a pale patch of colour. That alternation makes the staircase feel exposed to uneven illumination. It also keeps the eye moving. A sharply described notch draws attention to itself, then a looser stretch invites us to complete the shape from the surrounding steps. Sorolla balances recognizable construction with a surface that stays visibly painted.

The passage and the figure

Overhead, the ribs of the vault gather the upper part of the picture into a sequence of curves. Their long arcs differ from the short horizontal strokes of the stairs. The painted ceiling is relatively pale, so the warmer ribs and darker divisions remain easy to follow. As those curves recede, they carry the eye towards the far arch and its patch of blue. The passage has both weight and air: the supports are solid, yet the space between them remains open.

Near the far end, a dark figure stands against the lighter landscape. The person is small enough to be overlooked during a first inspection of the foreground. Once noticed, however, the silhouette changes our sense of scale. The stones become steps that a person could use, and the high vault becomes a shelter someone could pass beneath. A railing across the distant opening further separates the landing from the hillside beyond.

The figure’s smallness also preserves the balance of attention. There is no prominent face or elaborate gesture to compete with the staircase. The dark shape gives the eye a human point of reference while leaving the coloured stone and overhead structure dominant. Its near-black tone echoes other deep accents around the supports and along the left wall. It belongs to the painting’s pattern of light and dark as well as to the scene it depicts.

Seen this way, the passage is an active part of the composition. Its shadows do not merely provide a dark background for sunlit steps. They articulate the depth of the building and sharpen the brilliance of the approach. The illuminated foreground, sheltered middle distance and green view beyond form three distinct spaces. Sorolla brings them together within a narrow rectangle, allowing us to look through the building as well as up towards it.

A precise place and date

Earlier catalogues called the subject a staircase at Isaba. The Museo Sorolla corrects that identification to El Roncal and also rejects the frequently repeated date of 1914. Its account places Sorolla in the district in August 1912, citing a letter to Clotilde dated 28 August. The museum distinguishes this canvas from another staircase view, inventory 1048. It explains that in 1914 Sorolla painted Navarre, the Town Council of Roncal at Jaca, without returning to El Roncal or Isaba.^[1]

The corrected identification gives a firm setting to a picture whose appeal begins with ordinary physical things: a chipped edge, a sunlit wall, a cool strip of shadow. Sorolla’s viewpoint makes the approach itself the subject. The church is encountered through the experience of climbing towards it, and the surrounding landscape appears through openings left by its walls. Following that route with the eye, we register the building one surface at a time.
