Vincent van Gogh Brushwork and Technique
Introduction
Vincent van Gogh's brushwork can look urgent, but it was not careless. The strokes that make his paintings so recognisable grew from years of drawing, perspective study, close observation, repeated motifs, experiments with colour and a practical understanding of materials.
Impasto matters, but it is only one part of the story. Van Gogh also built images through contour, hatching, directional strokes, dots, exposed ground, simplified colour zones, reed-pen line, repeated versions, copies after admired artists and responsive handling of wet and dry paint.

Quick answer
Van Gogh's technique is best understood as a working system rather than a single brushstroke. His mature paintings use visible marks, thick paint, directional strokes, strong contour, broken colour and repeated motifs, but these effects were grounded in drawing, copying, perspective study, direct observation, colour theory and technical experimentation. He could work quickly, sometimes astonishingly quickly, but speed was often supported by long preparation.
Van Gogh's method at a glance
- Main foundationDrawing, contour, perspective, proportion, repeated study and close looking
- Best-known surface effectImpasto: thick paint that leaves visible brush or tool marks
- Common stroke typesShort dashes, hatching, dots, stippling, long directional strokes, contour strokes, swirls, parallel marks and woven backgrounds

- Important cautionEnergetic brushwork should not be confused with undisciplined painting
The rest of that letter is just as revealing as the short quotation. Van Gogh describes working directly on the spot, setting down the subject through drawing, then filling outlined or felt areas with simplified tints. In other words, the visible brushstroke begins before paint is loaded on the brush. It begins with structure.
Why Van Gogh's technique matters
Van Gogh's technique is one of the reasons his paintings remain legible even from a distance. A cypress bends like flame. A wheat field seems to move. A face is built from small coloured strokes rather than smoothed flesh tones. Sunflower seed heads become rough islands of paint. In The Starry Night, the night sky is both a view and a surface: colour and paint describe the world while also drawing attention to themselves as colour and paint.
Reading every mark as a psychological confession can obscure the artist’s decisions. Van Gogh's brushwork has often been pulled into the myth of the uncontrolled genius, but the technical evidence points in a more interesting direction. He studied. He copied. He repeated. He made drawings after paintings and paintings after drawings.
He also adjusted handling from subject to subject: smooth bands in a vase, jagged petals in Sunflowers, pulsing marks in skies, woven strokes in fields, nervous colour stripes in self-portraits and graphic outlines around irises or trees. Van Gogh did not have one brushstroke. He had a vocabulary.
Drawing as the technical foundation
Van Gogh's mature painting makes more sense if drawing is treated as its foundation rather than as a separate early stage. He used drawing to practise subjects, capture impressions, prepare compositions and, sometimes, make drawings after finished paintings so that Theo and fellow artists could understand his recent work.
The letters confirm the point. In 1883, Van Gogh told Theo that time spent drawing was profit and that drawing remained at the root of watercolour and painting. He also described practical tools such as a perspective frame: a view-finder with vertical, horizontal and diagonal guides that helped him establish broad outlines and proportions.
That is a useful key to later Van Gogh. Fast painting was not necessarily unplanned painting. It could be the result of a trained eye, a selected motif and a structure already understood through drawing.
Drawings can be studied as works on paper in their own right and as the structural basis for painted brushwork.
Before Arles: Dutch discipline, Antwerp pressure and Paris change
Van Gogh did not arrive at thick, bright, broken brushwork in one leap. In the Dutch years his subjects were peasants, weavers, cottages, fields, worn shoes and still lifes. His paint handling tended to be darker, earthier and more tonal. That dark tonal painting trained him to build forms through mass, shadow and structure before he adopted the brighter touch associated with Paris and Provence.
The Potato Eaters is a useful myth-correction. Van Gogh said the final painting had been painted in a relatively short time and largely from memory, but only after a whole winter of studies of heads and hands. The final surface may be rough, but roughness is not the same as randomness.
Paris changed the visible form of his touch. There he encountered Impressionism, Neo-Impressionism, Japanese prints and younger artists who were experimenting with broken colour and modern surfaces. Paris gave Van Gogh more than brighter colour. It gave him a new way to let the mark remain visible.
Two Paris self-portraits show the transition especially clearly. Self-portraits such as Self-Portrait with Grey Felt Hat and Self-Portrait as a Painter use short directional strokes, complementary colour and almost unblended paint to make artistic identity itself into a technical statement.
Impasto: thick paint, texture and purpose
Impasto is the term most often attached to Van Gogh's technique. It means paint applied so thickly that the material relief of the brushstroke or tool mark remains visible.
Van Gogh used impasto for different purposes. Sometimes it gives a flower head physical roughness. Sometimes it catches light on the surface. Sometimes it lets each stroke sit as an independent unit within a larger rhythm. Sometimes it separates one kind of matter from another: sky from field, petal from seed head, jacket from skin, cypress from cloud.
The National Gallery's Sunflowers material is one of the clearest public explanations. It describes long strokes following petals, leaves and stems, and raised stippled dabs imitating bristling seed heads. It also notes that Van Gogh exploited the stiff consistency of nineteenth-century oil paints to create thick impasto effects.
Impasto is not everywhere in a Van Gogh painting, and it is not always equally thick. In the London Sunflowers, thickly applied flowers contrast with smoother areas such as the surface beneath the vase and the hatched background. That contrast is part of the method. The eye feels difference because the paint body changes.
Directional brushwork: strokes that build form
Van Gogh's strokes do not simply cover an area; they often describe it. A long petal stroke follows the petal. A short stripe turns around a head. Dabs of colour collect as seeds, grasses or stars. A cypress may be built from rising and curling strokes that make the tree appear to grow and twist. A field may be woven from strokes running with the land.
This directional quality connects painting back to drawing. Hatching, cross-hatching and contour are drawing habits translated into paint. Dots, short stripes, parallel marks, radiating marks, comma-like strokes, swirls, angled lines and cross-hatching all belong to his working vocabulary.
The key is that direction carries meaning. In a portrait, stripes may model the head and intensify the sitter's presence. In Sunflowers, the direction of strokes helps separate petals, stems, leaves, seed heads, vase and background. In Wheat Field with Cypresses, wind, vegetation, cloud and tree each need their own movement. In Irises, leaf and blossom demand still another structure.
A shared vocabulary makes it possible to compare the handling of individual paintings without treating every mark as an isolated device.
Working on the spot: observation, simplification and selection
Van Gogh often worked from direct observation, but direct observation did not mean passive copying. Letter 596 to Emile Bernard explains that he worked on the spot by capturing the essence in drawing and then filling areas with simplified tints. The method joins three things that are sometimes separated in popular accounts: looking, drawing and colour structure.
This helps explain why Van Gogh could simplify boldly without abandoning nature. A field does not need every blade of grass. A sky does not need every atmospheric variation. A tree can be held by contour and rhythmic stroke. A yellow wall, a blue line or a violet earth tone can organise the painting more forcefully than literal description.
The Japanese Art page carries the fuller discussion of flatness, outline, cropping and Van Gogh's imagined Japan. Here the technical point is narrower: Japanese prints and related modern experiments encouraged him to think about simplified zones, decisive contour and a designed surface.
Wet-on-wet, reserves and order of work: the Sunflowers case study
Conservation evidence is essential because Van Gogh's technique is not only visible to the naked eye. Radiographs, raking light, scans and close technical study can reveal working order, paint thickness and changes in the surface.
The National Gallery's technical account of Sunflowers provides a clear case study. Radiographs of the London and Amsterdam versions show vigorous, rapid brushwork and offer clues to Van Gogh's sequence. The thickest paint appears in the sunflower heads, where wet paint was worked into wet paint and manipulated directly with the brush.
The London painting also shows a directional basket-like background and an unpainted reserve left for much of the bunch, first defined by a sketchy line drawing. Van Gogh then painted the background and added further contours after the flowers were mostly in place.
The same source notes that the Amsterdam version was enlarged with an added strip of wood, probably because of intended frame dimensions, and that the two canvases otherwise follow a very close format. This supports a broader point about repetitions and versions: Van Gogh's repeated paintings were technical and decorative projects, not mere duplicates.
Reed pen, line and graphic painting
Van Gogh's reed-pen drawings are central to understanding his painted line. In Arles he made reed pens from local hollow grasses and used them for bold, incisive drawing. The importance of reed pen is not only that it produced drawings. It trained a kind of pressure, rhythm and graphic decisiveness that can also be felt in paintings.
A reed-pen line can thicken, thin, break and bite into the paper. Translated into paint, that habit appears as dark contours, separate strokes and linear energy.
The Van Gogh Museum's technical study of Field with Irises near Arles gives a concrete example. It notes that Van Gogh drew contours in pencil, filled them with paint and then reinforced trees and irises with fine drawing-like lines in Prussian blue. Technical imaging makes those contour lines legible as material evidence, not just visual impression.
This example joins drawing, painting and conservation. The painted surface is not only brushwork; it is line, sequence and material decision.
Colour structure without duplicating the Colour page
Brushwork and colour are inseparable in Van Gogh. Colour explores Dutch earth tones, complementary contrast, pigments, fading, yellow and blue, red and green, night colour and portrait colour in depth. Here the question is how colour became structure through handling.
In Paris, Van Gogh used strokes of complementary colour beside one another rather than blending them into academic smoothness. In Self-Portrait with Grey Felt Hat, short stripes are set in different directions and complementary pairings such as blue/orange and red/green organise the surface, even though some red pigment has faded and changed the present contrast.
In Self-Portrait as a Painter, the palette itself displays complementary pairs, and those pairs are used in the painting. That is both colour theory and technique. Colour is not merely chosen; it is placed, stroked, juxtaposed and made visible as paint.
In The Starry Night, vivid blues and yellows are applied with gestural immediacy. The point is not to psychoanalyse every swirl. It is to show that colour and stroke together build the night sky as a structured surface.
Repetition, versions and copies as technique
Van Gogh's repeated versions were not signs that he had run out of ideas. Repetition was a method. It allowed him to test scale, colour, surface, format and decorative effect; to make gifts or exchanges; to stabilise a motif; and to rethink a subject after the first attempt.
The Sunflowers series is the clearest example. The museum versions belong to a larger group painted in 1888 and 1889, with several public versions and later replicas. Technical study of London and Amsterdam versions shows how closely related formats could still carry process evidence: wet-on-wet flower heads, reserve areas, background structure and final contours.
The same principle applies beyond Sunflowers. The Bedroom exists in multiple versions. Portraits, flower still lifes, cypresses, olive trees and copies after admired artists all show Van Gogh using repetition as a way of thinking.
Copying was also a technical act of translation. He was not mechanically reproducing another image. He was testing how line, colour, format and paint could transform a source.
Rain and image transfer
Two oils on canvas, both painted in Paris in October–November 1887, make copying unusually concrete. Bridge in the Rain (after Hiroshige) (F372/JH1297, s0114V1962) measures 73.3 by 53.8 centimetres. [15] Flowering Plum Orchard (after Hiroshige) (F371/JH1296, s0115V1962) measures 55.6 by 46.8 centimetres. [16]

Flowering Plum Orchard (after Hiroshige), F371/JH1296.

Bridge in the Rain (after Hiroshige), F372/JH1297.
In the rain picture, the near bridge climbs across the horizontal river, while long shower lines pass over sky, people and bridge alike. Those crossing directions hold two experiences together: the travellers’ route across the water and the downpour through which they move. The border encloses the weather in a second rectangle. Looking follows the rain across different objects; examination follows how its lines entered the paint. The visible pattern and the physical sequence answer different questions.
Technical examination of F372 found painted underdrawing, grey washes and reserved contours beneath uneven, thick paint. Rain was scored into partly wet paint with a sharp tool, freehand and with a ruler, exposing ground; thin blue paint followed, sometimes missing the grooves. [17]
F371’s surviving tracing d0772 and matching numbered grids and hatching establish a 1.5-fold enlargement. For F372, no tracing survives and microscopy and infrared examination detected no grid: a similar transfer at 1.75 times the source size is reconstructed, not directly observed. Undetected does not mean never present. [17]
Arles: energy, light and system
Arles is where many viewers first recognise the mature Van Gogh surface. The move south in 1888 brought stronger light, outdoor motifs, orchards, fields, portraits, night scenes, the Yellow House, Sunflowers and the hope for a Studio of the South.
In Arles, Van Gogh's brushwork often becomes more declarative. He uses thick paint in flowers, parallel strokes in fields and skies, contour lines around trees and objects, and high-key colour placed in simplified zones. Letter 596 is central because it shows him thinking about outline and simplified tint while working from nature.
The balance matters: visible energy, disciplined work. Arles also strengthens the bridge between painting and drawing. The reed-pen suites sent to Bernard, John Russell and Theo show that Van Gogh could translate oil paintings into line with extraordinary inventiveness.
Saint-Remy: cypresses, skies, flowers and restraint
At Saint-Remy , Van Gogh's technique becomes both more famous and more varied. The asylum year produced cypresses, olive groves, garden views, copies after artists he admired, interiors and flower still lifes. This variety extends beyond a single formula of swirling paint.
The Starry Night provides a distinctive example. The painting was based partly on observation and partly on invention. The village and cypress do not simply record the exact window view, and the technique joins memory, observation, invention and paint handling. The swirls are not evidence enough for medical speculation; they are a painted system.
The late flower paintings show another side of Saint-Remy. Irises and roses call for sinuous strokes, sweeping arabesques, narrow brushes and handling matched to leaf and blossom. Technique was responsive to motif. Irises, roses, cypresses and stars do not receive identical treatment.
Conservation and technical study: what the surface can reveal
Modern technical study does not replace looking, but it can sharpen it. Raking light makes impasto legible because light from the side catches ridges, peaks and dragged marks. X-rays can reveal dense pigments and earlier working sequences. MA-XRF can map elements associated with particular pigments, such as iron in Prussian blue.

| Sunflowers radiographs and technical study | Brushwork, paint thickness, wet-on-wet manipulation, background structure, reserve areas and working sequence |
| Field with Irises near Arles | Impasto under raking light, pencil contours and Prussian-blue graphic lines visible through technical imaging |

Ground and later changes
F372’s fine canvas has a thin grey chalk-and-bone-black ground; F371’s chalk ground lacks that black. In F372, oil darkened the ground before stretching: its boundary follows curves at the canvas tacks, unlike the straight varnish edge. Later wax-resin lining deepened the effect. Experiments show that wax-resin lining can mimic abrasion, while absorbed liquid glue can leave no separate sizing layer. Neither appearance proves sandpaper use or an unsized canvas. [17]
F174’s portrait surface acquired red/grey traces through contact with another not-quite-dry painting. [17]
In London’s Wheat Field with Cypresses (NG3861/F615/JH1755), Raymond White’s 1987 analysis identified poppy-seed oil as the ground binder. Selected paint samples contained ceresine wax and fatty-acid soaps, interpreted as ingredients helping disperse pigment in manufactured tube paint. The canvas was unlined at that examination, excluding wax-resin lining as the wax’s source. [19]
Signing the painted surface
Signing could itself be a surface operation. Engelmayer distinguishes a signature’s colour, placement, embedding and letter form; a name integrated into a depicted object works differently from one floating near the edge. Her study identifies five certain scratched signatures and one possible example, although the wet or dry state of the paint is unreported for Three Pairs of Shoes (F332). Underlining is no dependable measure of satisfaction. [20] Compare the different finishing choices in Imperial Fritillaries in a Copper Vase and Seascape near Les Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer.
Reworking earlier paintings
Returning to an old canvas could produce different surfaces. A 2024 study places the bright, thick additions to Poplars near Nuenen (F45), already painted over an earlier view, probably in Paris around summer 1886. Its map of additions remains tentative because certain pigments occur in both periods. [21]
In The Cottage (F83), smooth dark sky overpaint lies above a natural-resin varnish, possibly applied in Paris before the revision. Cobalt violet suggests January–April 1887; the handling appears to accommodate the earlier painting. Birds’ Nests (F111) was probably brightened in Paris around 1886; its sample’s lack of intermediate varnish leaves Nuenen revision possible. [21]
The investigation added cadmium yellow and eosin to the known Nuenen palette, while questioning cobalt blue’s place there. Eosin evidence came from Basket of Apples (F99) and Head of a Man (F179r). Egg-white varnishes were especially associated with works left in the Netherlands; some survive between compositions. Aged layers become insoluble and can bond tightly to paint, making removal hazardous. [21]

Frequently Asked Questions
The most common term is impasto when the paint is thick enough for brushmarks or ridges to remain visible. But Van Gogh's technique also includes hatching, directional strokes, dots, contours, stippling, broken colour, wet-on-wet passages, exposed reserves and graphic line.
Sometimes, yes. But quick execution often rested on preparation. The Potato Eaters, for example, was a final painting made after a winter of studies of heads and hands.
Yes, though not always through the same process. He used drawings, perspective study, repeated motifs, letter sketches, colour structures and practical working sequences. Technical evidence from Sunflowers shows reserves, background painting, thick flower heads and later contours.
He often used strokes as structural units rather than hiding them. They could follow petals, model a head, build a sky, describe a field or intensify colour contrasts. Nineteenth-century tube paints also helped artists work with stiffer paint and visible texture.
Palette-knife use requires evidence tied to a specific artwork. The examples discussed here concern brushwork, stippling, wet-on-wet manipulation and thick paint where examination or documentary sources establish them.
Drawing trained his eye for proportion, contour, perspective and simplified structure. Van Gogh's painted brushwork often behaves like drawing translated into colour and paint.
Because Van Gogh's painted line often behaves graphically. His reed-pen drawings show the importance of strong, varied, incisive line, and technical study of Field with Irises near Arles shows painted contour lines that function almost like drawing on the canvas.
No. Illness affected his life and working conditions, especially in Saint-Remy, but brushwork should be explained through source-backed evidence: drawing discipline, materials, colour theory, motif, repetition, observation, invention and technical study.
