The Duke of Wellington by Thomas Lawrence: Introduction

Thomas Lawrence painted the Duke of Wellington in several forms, from an imposing military commander holding the Sword of State to a statesman whose portrait remains visibly unfinished. The late painting of 1829, now in the National Portrait Gallery, concentrates attention on Wellington’s face above a broad brown field of outlined clothing. It was commissioned by Sarah, Countess of Jersey, and was still incomplete when Lawrence died. [1]

The difference between these portraits is central to understanding them. The great royal canvas of 1814–15 belongs to the Waterloo portrait series , while the 1829 work represents Wellington during his premiership. They have different patrons, dimensions, purposes and histories. Their shared sitter connects them, but each painting gives that identity a particular shape. [2]

Wellington as prime minister

Wellington became prime minister in 1828. Lawrence’s unfinished painting dates from the following year, placing it in a politically difficult period rather than at the moment of his military victory. The National Portrait Gallery interprets the image as a portrait of a statesman, with its concentrated expression suggesting firmness under pressure. [1]

Catholic emancipation was a major issue during his government. Wellington reluctantly supported the legislation passed in 1829, while firmly opposing demands for electoral reform. Those positions help explain the political setting in which Lady Jersey commissioned the work. The painting does not illustrate a particular parliamentary debate, but its sitter’s public identity extended well beyond the battlefield. [1]

The face can be read in relation to that political context without becoming evidence for every decision Wellington made. The alert eyes, closed mouth and turned head give the likeness a concentrated presence. The museum’s interpretation of resolve is one way of connecting those visible qualities with the pressures of office. It is a reading of a portrait, rather than a record of words spoken during a sitting.

1

A resolved face

The head is sharply present against the darker background. Small shifts around the eyes, mouth and cheek describe the likeness more fully than the broad clothing below.

The light neckcloth

White folds gather below the chin and break the darker passage between head and shoulders. Their compact, angular marks contrast with the smoother modelling of the face.

The broad unfinished body

The lower clothing is left in sweeping, relatively open strokes. Compare those lines and exposed warm areas with the more continuous modelling around the head.

The earlier ceremonial portrait

The head is surrounded by a much more elaborate arrangement of red uniform, bright insignia and dark diagonal accents. Compare this broad upper-body treatment with the later portrait’s restrained, unfinished clothing.

A full-length setting

Pale trousers lead down towards dark boots, while architecture and drapery surround the figure. This broad lower view shows how much of the earlier picture is devoted to setting and formal presentation.

Lady Jersey’s commission

Sarah Child-Villiers, Countess of Jersey, was a wealthy and influential political hostess. The National Portrait Gallery’s account describes her movement from Whig sympathies towards the Tories in the late 1820s, with Wellington and Robert Peel becoming particular favourites. Her commission therefore belonged to a world in which social gatherings and political allegiance were closely connected. [1]

That patronage gives the picture a different character from a royal commission intended for an assembly of European leaders. Lady Jersey wanted a likeness of a man she supported and regarded as a close associate. The portrait could express admiration through the particularity of a face, rather than through an elaborate inventory of victories and honours.

Her decision after Lawrence’s death shaped the object that survives. The executor offered to have a studio assistant finish the painting, but Lady Jersey refused. The exposed lower field is consequently part of the portrait’s history of ownership and choice. It is not simply an accidental condition discovered by a later museum. [1]

The finished head

Wellington’s head turns slightly within the dark surroundings. Light catches the forehead, nose and cheek, while shadows around the eyes and under the chin model the face. The swept hair forms a loose boundary above it. A white cravat creates another bright area immediately below, separating the flesh from the dark collar.

The expression gains force from the limited competition around it. There are no finished medals, uniform details or ceremonial objects to pull attention away from the eyes and mouth. The head remains the most fully developed part of the image, and the transition into the unresolved body is abrupt enough to be visible even at a distance.

Closer inspection reveals differences within the apparently complete area. The face is carefully articulated, while the hair and edges of the collar are more freely stated. Lawrence brings the likeness into focus through selective emphasis. The portrait’s authority depends on those relationships of light, colour and definition, not on filling every part of the canvas to the same degree.

What remains unfinished

Below the collar, the body occupies a broad brown area. Dark drawn lines indicate parts of the coat and the disposition of the arms, but they do not resolve into the finished fabrics seen in many of Lawrence’s portraits. This field allows the viewer to follow something of the planned figure beneath the completed likeness.

Its incompleteness should not be confused with a deliberately brown coat painted to a uniform finish. The visible outlines, exposed surface and sharp differences in development make the working state important to the image. Nor should a reproduction crop the canvas down to the head and present that fragment as the entire painting. The relationship between head and body is part of the surviving object.

The unfinished state also changes the balance of colour. The warm lower field provides a broad, relatively quiet base beneath the darker collar and lighter face. That effect is visible now, but it does not establish the colours Lawrence would have chosen for every final garment or background passage. A projected completion would require evidence beyond the outlines themselves.

An insight into Lawrence’s practice

Jacob Simon’s National Portrait Gallery study explains that Lawrence could begin portraits with drawing directly on the canvas. It also distinguishes several roles for such drawing: a preliminary stage, an abandoned attempt or, in some cases, a work allowed to remain in drawn form. The status of one object should not be transferred automatically to another. [3]

Here the object record specifically identifies the picture as unfinished at Lawrence’s death. The visible body drawing and resolved head help explain how a strong likeness could coexist with an incomplete composition. They do not, by themselves, reveal an exact number of sittings or a universal order in which the artist always painted hands, costume and background.

The proposed studio completion is equally revealing. Simon’s research describes posthumous work by assistants and other painters across Lawrence’s unfinished output, while noting differences between particular cases. Lady Jersey’s refusal makes this portrait an especially clear example of a patron preserving the artist’s own incomplete state. It does not mean that all other unfinished portraits were treated the same way. [3]

The earlier portrait with the Sword of State

The Royal Collection’s very large portrait of Wellington dates from 1814–15 and measures 317.1 by 225.65 centimetres. George, then Prince Regent, commissioned it for 500 guineas. The royal military and diplomatic portrait project later found its setting in the Waterloo Chamber at Windsor Castle, but this painting began before the battle that gave the room its name. [2]

Wellington stands beneath an enormous arch, dressed in scarlet Field Marshal’s uniform. He raises the Sword of State, while a baton and a letter signed by the prince appear beside him. The Royal Collection interprets these objects as signs of military office, royal authority and the Crown’s gratitude. The portrait makes those relationships explicit through objects and gesture. [2]

The contrast with the 1829 painting is striking. The earlier full-length figure stands within architecture, with white trousers and dark boots carrying the body into the foreground. The raised sword leads the eye upwards, and the red curtains and uniform give the scene ceremonial brilliance. In the later portrait, the concentrated face must carry much of the impression of authority on its own.

A ceremony before Waterloo

In the background of the royal painting, a small procession approaches St Paul’s Cathedral. The Royal Collection identifies the event as the thanksgiving service of 7 July 1814, celebrating Napoleon’s initial defeat. It precedes his return from Elba and the Battle of Waterloo in June 1815. The painting’s later place in the Waterloo Chamber should not obscure that earlier subject. [2]

This distinction changes the image’s historical meaning. The grand arch, raised sword and distant procession celebrate a victory believed to have brought the conflict to an end. Later events gave the royal portrait series a wider commemorative purpose, but the visible ceremony belongs to a specific moment in 1814.

The painting thus joins a commanding individual with public ritual. The distant crowd is tiny beside the foreground figure, and the cathedral is partly enclosed by the monumental architecture. Lawrence gives Wellington an imposing scale while preserving a glimpse of the city and ceremony through which national gratitude could be expressed.

The portrait painted for Robert Peel

A further major Wellington portrait was painted for Robert Peel and exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1825. The National Portrait Gallery’s iconographic survey associates that work with Wellington College and records its later engraved and painted versions. It is another distinct commission, not an alternative date for the 1829 Lady Jersey canvas. [4]

The 1825 portrait belongs to the history of Wellington’s image between the early victory portrait and his premiership. Its exhibition placed a privately commissioned likeness before a public audience. It also supplied a model that could be repeated in different sizes and media, extending the reach of a particular portrait beyond its original canvas.

The survey records Samuel Cousins’s mezzotint of 1847 and later painted copies or variants. Those objects have their own makers and dates. A print made after Lawrence is not another oil he painted, and a nineteenth-century copy is not evidence that he returned to the sitter after his death. The original commission remains the starting point for identifying its derivatives. [4]

Wellington’s repeated appearances in art can make superficially similar images difficult to identify. The National Portrait Gallery’s survey discusses an Evans portrait in uniform and cloak and suggests that it may be related to Lawrence’s unfinished Lady Jersey commission. Its language is tentative: the head may be by Lawrence, with the surrounding figure associated with Evans. [4]

That possibility should not turn a separate finished image into a reliable diagram of how the National Portrait Gallery canvas would have looked. An assistant or copyist could adapt a likeness, add costume or combine elements from different sources. A relationship between images needs more precise evidence than a recognisable face.

The same caution applies to prints. Their captions may identify a painter, engraver, publisher and owner, each contributing a different part of the object’s history. Looking at those details helps distinguish Lawrence’s original portraits from later circulation. The differences enrich the story by showing how Wellington’s likeness could serve royal, political and public purposes.

The unfinished portrait enters the national collection

The National Portrait Gallery purchased the 1829 painting in 2017 following a public appeal, with support from several funds, charitable bodies and individual contributors. Its collection number is NPG 7032. That acquisition gave the unfinished likeness a public setting while preserving the state Lady Jersey had chosen to retain. [1]

Its appeal lies partly in the meeting of political portraiture and visible artistic work. Wellington’s head has the conviction of a complete likeness, while the surrounding canvas keeps the process open to view. The result allows attention to move between the identity of a famous sitter and the means through which Lawrence gave that identity form.

Read alongside the earlier royal full-length, it also shows how the same painter could present authority through very different resources. One portrait uses architecture, uniform, ceremony and a raised sword; the other holds the eye through a face above an unfinished body. Their differences are as informative as the likeness they share.
