John Julius Angerstein by Thomas Lawrence: Introduction
Two portraits in the National Gallery trace Thomas Lawrence’s long association with John Julius Angerstein. The earlier painting, made about 1790, presents the collector at around fifty-five with a direct gaze, dark coat and white neckcloth. The later canvas, dated 1824, is Lawrence’s own copy of an older likeness, showing Angerstein in a red, fur-trimmed outer coat with spectacles in his hand. The pictures are catalogued as NG6370 and NG129. [1] [2]
Their shared sitter connects private friendship, financial support and the history of a national collection. Angerstein helped Lawrence during the artist’s early career, while thirty-eight paintings from his collection were later purchased as the foundation of the National Gallery. The two Lawrence portraits entered that museum through separate routes; they were not both part of the original purchase.

An early friendship and patronage
Angerstein became Lawrence’s friend and patron shortly after the artist arrived in London in 1787. He was about thirty-five years older than the painter. The National Gallery records a sustained relationship in which Lawrence portrayed members of Angerstein’s family and circle as well as the collector himself. [1]
The early portrait belongs to the moment when Lawrence was establishing his reputation. The Gallery dates it to about 1790, when the painter was around twenty, and describes it as the earliest of four known portraits he made of Angerstein. The work thus represents both an emerging artist’s ability and a relationship that would continue for decades. [1]
Patronage could involve more than paying for a picture. Angerstein repeatedly lent Lawrence money, and the museum states that much of it was not repaid. Their association therefore included practical financial assistance as well as admiration for art. The painting’s apparently straightforward likeness sits within a more complicated history of friendship and dependence. [1]

The direct encounter
The head turns towards the viewer above the dark coat. Warm colour across the cheeks and small, concentrated accents around the eyes give the likeness a different intensity from its softer surroundings.
The portrait made about 1790
In the earlier canvas, Angerstein faces the viewer with his body slightly turned. Pale curled hair, a white neckcloth and a warm complexion emerge from the darker coat and background. The directness of the gaze gives the relatively simple arrangement a concentrated presence.
A red curtain occupies the right side of the image, while a lighter, more atmospheric area opens at the left. These surrounding passages give variety to the background without competing with the head. The light neckcloth marks a clear transition between face and clothing, drawing attention towards the mouth and chin.
The coat is broadly painted, with changes in light suggesting its form rather than describing every detail equally. Its large dark shapes support the head above. Lawrence makes the sitter immediately recognisable through selected areas of definition, while allowing the surrounding fabric and setting to remain more freely handled.
The National Gallery suggests that the portrait may have been painted at a single sitting. That possibility fits its rapidly worked appearance, but should remain a possibility rather than a documented universal example of Lawrence’s speed. The picture can feel immediate without providing a complete record of the time spent making it. [1]
Another portrait beneath the surface
The Gallery also reports that Lawrence seems to have painted the likeness over an unfinished portrait of another man. Traces of that earlier image have begun to show through. This gives the canvas a physical history extending beyond the sitter visible on its surface. [1]
The distinction matters when looking at uncertain passages. A mark belonging to an earlier composition is not necessarily an unusual feature of Angerstein’s surroundings or clothing. The visible painting and the support beneath it can preserve different decisions made at different times.
The museum’s account does not identify that first sitter in the description used here. It would therefore be misleading to invent a name or reconstruct a finished earlier portrait from the reproduction. The secure point is the reuse of a canvas on which another likeness had been begun.
Such reuse also gives the apparent spontaneity a practical dimension. Lawrence could begin a new likeness on an available support rather than starting with an entirely untouched surface. The resulting picture combines a fresh encounter with the material remains of an abandoned one.
Collecting and advice
Angerstein’s collection grew through an interest in British painting and major works by older European artists. The National Gallery records that Lawrence and Benjamin West may have advised him on purchases. That qualification is important: the artists’ association with the collector does not make every acquisition demonstrably their decision. [1]
The collection included Hogarth’s Marriage A-la-mode , works by Claude and paintings associated with Raphael, Rubens, Van Dyck and other major names. It offered a setting in which the study of earlier art could accompany contemporary portraiture. Lawrence’s relationship with Angerstein belonged to that wider culture of collecting as well as the making of individual likenesses. [1]
One notable purchase was Sebastiano del Piombo’s The Raising of Lazarus , acquired from the Orléans collection sale in 1798. Such acquisitions brought works of very different dates and origins into a private London collection. Their later national purchase would give that private enterprise an institutional afterlife. [1]
Wealth and the history behind the collection
The National Gallery’s research places Angerstein’s wealth within marine insurance and its connections to the slave economy. It identifies an unknown proportion of business involving slave ships and vessels carrying goods produced by enslaved people. It also records trusteeship connections with estates and enslaved people in Grenada and Antigua. [3]
The same research distinguishes those links from evidence that he personally traded or owned enslaved people in his own right, which it states has not been established. The proportion of relevant insurance business is unknown. These qualifications prevent a general connection from becoming an invented percentage or a precise claim about how an individual painting was financed. [3]
This history belongs alongside the collector’s patronage rather than being visible as a symbol in the portraits. The paintings present a particular person; research into the origins and uses of wealth supplies another part of the world in which they were made and collected.

Watch on YouTubeThe later likeness
The later image gives Angerstein a larger surrounding body and more elaborate clothing. A red outer coat with fur trimming provides a broad, warm field around the dark inner garments. His pale face remains the principal focus, while the white neckcloth leads the eye down towards the centre of the chest.
At the lower left, his right hand holds spectacles above a sheet of paper. These small objects give the seated figure an action without requiring a dramatic gesture. They also create another area of light, balancing the brighter face against the darker expanse of clothing and background.
The contrast with the early portrait is not simply a matter of added years. The later composition has a different scale, costume and relation between head, body and accessories. The spectacles and paper make it more visibly an arrangement around a seated figure, while the earlier likeness concentrates more narrowly on the head and upper torso.
The face can be compared across the two paintings without treating either as a medical record of ageing. Their differences reflect separate moments, formats and pictorial purposes. The later National Gallery canvas also has a further distinction: it was copied from an earlier portrait by Lawrence himself.

What an autograph copy means
The National Gallery dates NG129 to 1824 and identifies it as the artist’s own copy of a likeness of Angerstein in later life. The original had passed to the sitter’s son, John. Lawrence borrowed that painting in order to make a version for George IV. [2]
An autograph copy is a repetition painted by the original artist. The term distinguishes this canvas from a reproduction by another painter or a print made after the composition. It does not make the two objects physically identical or erase their separate ownership histories.
The date also matters. Angerstein died in 1823, so the 1824 canvas was not painted from fresh sittings with him. Lawrence was returning to a likeness already made. The portrait could preserve an established image of a valued patron while serving a new royal commission. [2]
This makes the work particularly useful when considering repeated portraits. A later date may indicate a new version rather than a new encounter with the sitter. Looking at an image alone cannot always settle that distinction; the object’s documented history supplies the explanation.
George IV, Windsor and William IV
George IV’s wish for a copy gave the portrait a place within royal collecting. The National Gallery records that the canvas was later framed and sent to Windsor in 1828. It passed with the throne to William IV, who presented it to the Gallery in 1836. [2]
That route differs from the descent of the early portrait. It links Lawrence’s private patron with a royal admirer and then with a national institution. The same likeness could carry meaning in a family collection, a royal residence and a public gallery, with each setting adding another context.
The museum identifies the frame associated with this later portrait as original to its royal presentation. The unframed reproduction shows the painted image, while the frame’s recorded history belongs to the way the canvas was prepared for display. Its date should not be confused with the making of the earlier original that Lawrence copied.
A national collection and two later arrivals
After Angerstein’s death, the British government purchased thirty-eight paintings from his collection in 1824. They formed the nucleus of the National Gallery and were initially displayed at his former house, 100 Pall Mall. This purchase concerned the collection he had assembled, rather than every portrait made of him. [1]
NG129 entered through William IV’s presentation in 1836. NG6370 followed much later, in 1965, through the bequest of Miss May Rowley, a descendant of the sitter’s daughter. The two portraits therefore arrived more than a century apart and through different kinds of ownership. [2] [1]
Their later reunion within the museum makes them an especially informative pair. They allow the early Lawrence to be considered alongside an established artist returning to a long-standing patron’s likeness. Their histories connect youthful opportunity, financial help, artistic repetition and the changing purposes of a portrait.
The direct gaze of the early image and the more expansive later figure each offer a convincing presence. Neither tells the whole history by itself. Together with their collecting records, they make a sustained relationship visible while also showing how one sitter’s image could move between private, royal and national settings.

This directory combines identified works with the headed entries in Algernon Graves’s 1900 catalogue. Historical records may cover groups, studies, replicas or several versions, and may overlap with modern museum records. Their titles and attributions describe the historical account; they do not establish present ownership or a count of unique authenticated paintings. Exhibition, engraving, purchase and sale years are not treated as creation dates. Medium remains unspecified where the entry does not establish it. Record numbers are modern finding aids. Linked articles explain the principal versions and current evidence. Historical catalogue: Gower, Sir Thomas Lawrence (1900), pp. 103–176. [4] The National Portrait Gallery’s 2010 exhibition supplies additional paintings and drawings. [5] The Holburne exhibition documents early portraits. [6] Jeffares’s consulted sections provide specialist pastel evidence. [7] The Royal Collection identifies the George IV studio version. [8]
