Peniston Lamb by Thomas Lawrence: Introduction

Peniston Lamb turns towards the viewer from a dark setting in Thomas Lawrence’s portrait of about 1790. Powdered hair and a white cravat frame his illuminated face, while a deep red coat gives the smaller canvas a rich area of colour. The National Gallery owns the painting, NG6686, an example of the young Lawrence’s ability to make a carefully arranged likeness feel like a momentary encounter. [1]

The sitter is the younger Peniston Lamb, born in 1770, who later became a member of Parliament. His father, also named Peniston Lamb, was the first Viscount Melbourne and commissioned the portrait. Keeping the two men distinct is essential to understanding both the image and its family history. [1]

A glance across the canvas

The body and head point in different directions. Lamb’s coat establishes a turned shoulder, while his face comes back towards us. The angle leaves one side of the face in deeper shadow and makes the nearer eye especially noticeable. Lawrence gives the glance a definite destination without making the entire figure face squarely forward.

The National Gallery notes that the sitter’s left eye occupies the midpoint of the canvas. That placement helps explain the portrait’s concentration. The eye acts as a point around which the tilted head, ruffled hair and high collar can vary without dispersing attention. The apparent movement has a firm compositional centre. [1]

The mouth is slightly open, and the eyebrows contribute to the alert expression. Together with the turning pose, these details can suggest an interrupted exchange. They do not require an invented conversation or a claim that the artist recorded one unplanned instant. A composed portrait can convey the impression of a brief encounter.

That distinction also matters when interpreting character. The direct eye contact may appear confident, reserved or enquiring to different viewers. Those impressions describe how Lawrence’s image works; they are not independent proof of the sitter’s temperament. The painting creates a particular public and family presence from pose, expression and handling.

Powdered hair and the white cravat

The hair provides a pale, irregular shape around the head. Its powdered surface catches the light, with looser passages extending towards the ear and collar. Against the dark background, these strands keep the outline active. The softness of the hair also sets off the more closely described features of the face.

Below the chin, the cravat forms a second concentration of white. Its gathered folds have a fuller, more broken rhythm than the smooth cheek and forehead. Lawrence uses changes in paint handling to suggest different surfaces: soft hair, folded cloth and skin do not need the same degree or kind of definition. [1]

The red coat has a high collar that rises close to the jaw. The museum suggests that the fabric may be velvet; the identification remains a possibility rather than a certainty about the surviving garment. Its dark colour allows the head and neckcloth to dominate, while giving the lower part of the portrait more substance than an undifferentiated shadow. [1]

The costume is fashionable, but the arrangement avoids a rigidly formal effect. The loosely treated hair and abundant cravat interrupt the coat’s more structured shape. Their combination makes elegance and informality compatible within the same likeness. The viewer encounters a young man in carefully chosen dress who nevertheless seems capable of turning and responding.

The curtain and the suggestion of an oval

A cord and tassel can be made out at the left. They belong to a curtain whose curve partly encloses the figure, creating something like an oval within the rectangular canvas. The device gives the head a containing shape without surrounding it with a sharply drawn border. [1]

The Gallery proposes a relationship with Van Dyck, whose portraits Lawrence studied. The comparison concerns a way of arranging a sitter and background, rather than an identified picture copied detail for detail. Lawrence could draw on an established portrait vocabulary while making its effect feel unusually immediate. [1]

The darkness has an active role in that effect. The setting does not demand attention through a catalogue of possessions, architecture or landscape. Instead, the partially visible curtain and the lit face establish different depths. The sitter appears close to us, emerging from an interior that is suggested more than described.

An early portrait and a later political career

The date of about 1790 places Lamb and Lawrence at similar youthful stages of life: the sitter was born in 1770 and the painter in 1769. The portrait belongs to the period of Lawrence’s early public success, around the time of his celebrated likenesses of Queen Charlotte and Elizabeth Farren . [1]

Its scale and purpose differ from those large exhibition portraits. At 76.2 by 63.5 centimetres, it concentrates on the upper body and expression. Lawrence has less room for an expansive setting, but uses the turn of the head and the contrast of light and dark to give the smaller picture a strong presence. [1]

Lamb subsequently represented Newport in Parliament from 1793 to 1796 and Hertfordshire from 1802 until his death in January 1805. The National Gallery records tuberculosis as the cause of his death. The painting precedes those parliamentary periods; it is a youthful family commission rather than an image of an established political career. [1]

His later illness need not be read into the pale face. Light complexion, powdered hair and a brilliant white cravat are central to the portrait’s colour arrangement. They offer no basis for diagnosing a condition at the time of painting. His biography and Lawrence’s pictorial choices remain related but different kinds of information.

The Melbourne family and Emily Lamb

Peniston was the eldest child of the first Viscount Melbourne and Elizabeth Milbanke. Lawrence’s connection with the family continued: the National Gallery also owns his 1803 portrait of Peniston’s younger sister, Emily Mary Lamb , commissioned by their father. [1] [2]

The sister’s portrait offers an illuminating comparison. Her shoulders turn away while her head comes back towards the viewer, and broad passages of hair and pale fabric give the image movement. The paintings share Lawrence’s interest in a returning glance, though their different dates and formats prevent them from being treated as an interchangeable pair.

Emily’s later identities as Countess Cowper and Viscountess Palmerston are also important to the ownership history. They explain names encountered in accounts of the family and its pictures. They do not change the identity of the young man in this earlier portrait, or turn his father into the sitter. [2]

The portrait passed through the family, including the Cowper and Desborough lines, before appearing at Christie’s on 24 November 1998 as lot 43. George Pinto acquired it at that sale. The museum’s provenance connects its long private history with the collector whose estate eventually brought it into the national collection. [1]

In 2019 it was accepted in lieu of inheritance tax from Pinto’s estate and allocated to the National Gallery. That acquisition came eight years after the Gallery received Emily’s portrait through the same scheme, although from a different ownership history. The two modern allocations reunited related family likenesses within a public collection. [1] [2]

The portrait’s appeal remains close to the experience it first offers: a pale head turns out of darkness, framed by soft hair and a bright cravat. The family names and later political career give that encounter a history. Lawrence’s arrangement makes the youthful sitter immediately present before the viewer has learned it.

Thomas Lawrence artworks and catalogue records

This directory combines identified works with the headed entries in Algernon Graves’s 1900 catalogue. Historical records may cover groups, studies, replicas or several versions, and may overlap with modern museum records. Their titles and attributions describe the historical account; they do not establish present ownership or a count of unique authenticated paintings. Exhibition, engraving, purchase and sale years are not treated as creation dates. Medium remains unspecified where the entry does not establish it. Record numbers are modern finding aids. Linked articles explain the principal versions and current evidence. Historical catalogue: Gower, Sir Thomas Lawrence (1900), pp. 103–176. [3] The National Portrait Gallery’s 2010 exhibition supplies additional paintings and drawings. [4] The Holburne exhibition documents early portraits. [5] Jeffares’s consulted sections provide specialist pastel evidence. [6] The Royal Collection identifies the George IV studio version. [7]
