Miss Murray by Thomas Lawrence: Introduction
A small girl holds up her skirt to display a collection of flowers in Thomas Lawrence’s Miss Murray . A pink sash crosses her white dress, and a dark hat frames her curling hair. One foot advances towards the viewer while the gathered fabric spreads between her hands. The painting belongs to the Iveagh Bequest at Kenwood, where it forms part of a celebrated collection of British portraits. English Heritage dates it to about 1824–1826. [1]
The image gives a formal portrait the appearance of a passing childhood activity. Flowers, unevenly raised cloth and the forward step make the child seem momentarily occupied rather than ceremonially posed. Yet those elements are carefully arranged. The picture’s warmth depends on Lawrence’s ability to unite a recognizable sitter with a design that makes movement, costume and landscape work together.

The child and her family connections
The sitter is associated with Sir George Murray’s daughter Louisa. The National Portrait Gallery of Australia’s account of Murray discusses Lawrence’s portraits of the soldier and his daughter, known as Miss Murray. Murray belonged to Wellington’s military circle, and English Heritage identifies the child as the duke’s goddaughter. These connections place the portrait within a network of families already familiar with Lawrence’s work. [2] [3]
The family relationship is useful context, but the painting does not represent the child through military insignia or an adult’s public office. Her white dress, hat and flowers establish a different world of attention. Lawrence’s patrons might be soldiers and statesmen, yet a portrait of their child could express qualities that required another kind of setting and pose.
An exhibition description from the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, discusses Lawrence’s wish to capture the sitter’s fleeting childhood beauty, quoting from a letter to her father. The sentiment helps explain the portrait’s apparent immediacy. The raised skirt and advancing foot make the likeness seem attached to a particular stage of growing up, even though the finished arrangement is designed to remain persuasive long after that stage has passed. [4]
The Kenwood canvas and its date
English Heritage’s collection contribution to Google Arts & Culture supplies an unframed height of 1,359 mm and width of 1,080 mm. Those measurements describe the painting, while the substantially larger framed measurements include its surrounding object. The distinction matters when comparing portraits that share a sitter’s name. The Kenwood canvas is considerably larger than the Frick painting discussed later in this article. [1]
The date range of about 1824–1826 places the work among Lawrence’s mature child portraits, close to The Calmady Children and The Red Boy . It is a collection dating range, rather than evidence that Lawrence spent every part of those years continuously painting this canvas. The picture belongs to a period in which intimate family subjects remained important alongside his royal and diplomatic commissions. [1]
A step towards the viewer
The pose is built around an unequal distribution of movement. The legs suggest a forward step, while the arms extend sideways to hold the skirt. Her face remains directed towards the viewer. Those different motions make the child seem both engaged in an activity and aware of the person looking at her. Lawrence gives the encounter a social quality without requiring a second figure within the painting.
The near foot carries attention down from the face and sash to the bottom of the composition. A white stocking stands out against the darker ground, and the shoe supplies a small, strong accent. The other foot remains farther back. This difference in placement helps establish depth, making the child appear to occupy a path or open space in front of the background vegetation.
The skirt extends the movement across the canvas. Its lifted edges form a shallow curve, and the flowers collect within that temporary cradle. The fabric connects the hands while also giving the viewer a reason for their position. A practical action becomes the organizing structure of the portrait: she holds the material up because it contains what she has gathered.
Flowers held and flowers dropped
The flowers introduce variety into a composition dominated by white clothing and dark foliage. Their colours gather close to the centre, just below the sash, while a few fallen blooms lie on the ground towards the left. The two groups connect the child’s hands with the space around her feet. They make the ground part of the portrait’s action rather than simply a platform beneath the figure.
The contrast between gathered and scattered flowers also gives the scene an implied sequence. A viewer can imagine collecting, carrying and dropping them, although the canvas itself presents one composed arrangement. Lawrence creates that suggestion through placement. It is unnecessary to invent a particular outing or a remembered incident to appreciate how the flowers make the activity intelligible.
They also distinguish this picture from a portrait in which a child simply holds an emblem. The gathered skirt requires both hands and affects the fall of the dress. Flowers become a reason for posture, movement and the shape of the pale foreground. The detail’s pictorial usefulness is as important as its association with youth and outdoor pleasure.
Dress sash and hat
The white dress forms a large area of light against the wooded background. Its upper part is comparatively contained, while the lifted lower fabric spreads out to either side. Lace and translucent passages keep the pale surface varied. The skirt’s curve gives the figure breadth without hiding the forward movement of the legs below it.
The pink sash provides a clear division at the waist. Its colour connects with smaller warm accents around the costume and footwear, while the dark hat gives the head a stronger outline. Flowers and pale trimming interrupt that dark shape. Lawrence makes the face readable through contrasts that extend beyond the features themselves, using clothing to establish the setting in which the likeness appears.
The ribbons introduce narrow lines among the larger areas of cloth. One falls down from the hat near the body, guiding attention between the head and waist. The different scales of detail matter: the broad skirt supplies the main movement, the sash steadies the centre, and the smaller ribbons add a less regular rhythm. The figure remains clearly organized without appearing geometrically rigid.
A landscape arranged around the figure
The background is darker and less immediately detailed than the child. A tree rises at the right, with foliage gathering behind the hat and arms. A low barrier crosses the middle distance. These features keep the setting readable while allowing the dress and face to remain the principal areas of light. The girl seems close enough to address the viewer, with the darker surroundings held behind her.
The space above and beside the head prevents the portrait from becoming a simple cut-out silhouette. The hat meets irregular leaves and branches, while pale sky appears towards the upper left. Below, the open ground gives the stepping foot somewhere to advance. The landscape therefore contributes both contrast and room for the action; its role extends beyond decorative scenery.
The effect differs from the broad, nocturnal landscape of The Red Boy . There the seated child seems absorbed in a space beyond the immediate encounter. Miss Murray’s direct look and displayed flowers encourage a more outward exchange. The comparison reveals Lawrence adapting the portrait of a child through changes of attention, gesture and setting, rather than applying one fixed expression of innocence.

The flower-gathering pose belongs to the same professional practice that produced imposing adult portraits. Lawrence had to create an effective likeness while also arranging dress, hands and surrounding space. Here, the sitter’s small scale becomes part of the picture’s appeal. The broad sweep of the skirt and the comparatively low viewpoint give her activity an importance that a more distant representation would diminish.
The apparent informality should therefore be considered alongside the portrait’s formal ambition. Its full-length format allows the feet, fallen flowers and entire movement of the dress to contribute to the image. A crop concentrating only on the face would preserve the likeness while removing much of what makes the composition distinctive. The child’s relation to the ground is as carefully considered as the framing of her head.
The image in nineteenth century print
A print by George Henry Phillips records the image’s continuing circulation after Lawrence’s death. The Rijksmuseum catalogues its 1839 impression as Portrait of Louisa Georgina Augusta Anne Murray , with Miss Murray as the title printed on the object. It credits Phillips as printmaker, Lawrence as the painter after whom it was made, and Hodgson & Graves as publisher in London. [5]
The print’s plate mark measures 330 × 253 mm, much smaller than the Kenwood painting. The museum lists mezzotint, engraving and etching among its techniques. These details identify a separate object with its own making and publication history. They also show how a portrait’s familiar name could travel through forms that differed substantially in size and surface from the painted canvas. [5]
The longer name in the print record gives the broadly titled child portrait another kind of specificity. Miss Murray emphasizes a youthful social identity, while the expanded name identifies an individual within a family. Reproductions could preserve that identification even as the picture’s flower-gathering motif acquired a wider appeal. The history of the image includes both the sitter’s name and the composition’s attraction to later viewers.
The separate Frick painting
The Frick Collection also owns an oil painting titled Miss Louisa Murray . It dates that canvas to after 1827 and records dimensions of 92.7 × 73.3 cm, with accession number 1916.1.84. Those fields distinguish it from the larger Kenwood work dated about 1824–1826. Its ownership history includes Sedelmeyer, F. R. Elkington, Rodman Wanamaker and Virginia Bacon before Frick acquired it in 1916. [6]
The shared name does not make the two museum objects interchangeable. Dates, measurements and collection histories belong to particular canvases. The Frick painting and the Phillips print are useful related works, but their records should not supply an acquisition date or dimensions for Kenwood’s picture. Keeping these objects distinct preserves the different routes through which Lawrence’s portraits and their reproductions reached later collections.
Lord Iveagh and Kenwood
English Heritage records that the sitter owned the Kenwood portrait as an adult. Lord Iveagh’s art dealer bought it at the sale of her estate and sold it to him two days later. That brief account connects the painting’s family history with the collecting activity through which it eventually became part of the Iveagh Bequest. The picture’s present setting grew from a much later encounter between a collector and an established portrait. [3]
Kenwood gives the image a broader context among paintings by artists such as Reynolds, Gainsborough and Romney. Its pale facade and surrounding grounds provide a present setting for works assembled from many earlier places and commissions. The house belongs to the painting’s collecting history, while the wooded space around the child serves the portrait’s own imaginative design. [3]
The portrait’s continuing appeal lies in how much it organizes around a simple activity. The hands hold flowers, the skirt becomes a carrier, and the stepping foot gives the figure a direction. Those details keep the child’s action legible within the grand format of a full-length portrait. Her direct look then turns that activity into an encounter with the viewer.
