Pope Pius VII by Thomas Lawrence: Introduction
Pope Pius VII sits beneath an immense red canopy in Thomas Lawrence’s portrait of 1819. A pale face and white robes emerge from a setting dominated by crimson fabric, a high-backed throne and monumental architecture. At the left, a view into a sculpture gallery connects the sitter with the recovery of Rome’s artistic treasures. The painting belongs to the Royal Collection, RCIN 404946, and forms part of the Waterloo portrait series . [1]
The portrait represents the pope as both a person and a ruler within the post-Napoleonic settlement. Lawrence’s dazzling treatment of cloth and surrounding grandeur does not overwhelm the relatively small head at the centre. Instead, the contrast between a delicate likeness and an imposing apparatus of authority gives the image much of its force. Its meaning depends on the recent history of its sitter as well as the British royal commission behind it.

A pope after captivity
Luigi Barnaba Chiaramonti was elected pope in 1800. In 1809 Napoleon imprisoned him after his opposition to the annexation of the Papal States. His return to Rome in 1814 gave his person a significance extending beyond the usual continuity of papal office. The Royal Collection’s interpretation presents him as a focus for political and spiritual recovery after the upheavals of war. [1]
That history helps explain his place in Lawrence’s series of European leaders. The portrait does not show an action on a battlefield. Its sitter represented another form of resistance and survival, and the later exhibition label describes him as a figure associated with the victory of peace over war. The series brought different kinds of authority into one commemorative project. [2]
The contrast between recent captivity and the setting’s splendour gives the portrait an additional resonance. The pope occupies a throne and ceremonial surroundings, but the pale face remains vulnerable within them. The image can convey restored authority without making its human subject appear physically overwhelming. The recent history encourages a viewer to read those two kinds of presence together.

Details from POPE PIUS VII
Compare the cropped details with the complete images above. Notice how their colours, shapes and positions contribute to the larger compositions.
The head within the chair
The face is small within the tall chair and surrounding red forms. Its lighter modelling gives the seated figure an individual focus inside the much larger ceremonial arrangement.
Hands and the chair arms
The two hands occupy different positions across the chair. Pale cuffs and fabric connect them, while the darker wooden supports make their placement easy to follow.
Lawrence in Rome in 1819
Lawrence arrived in Rome in May 1819 and was accommodated in the Quirinal Palace. The Royal Collection records nine sittings with Pius VII and a payment of 500 guineas for the portrait. These details place the painting within a substantial royal undertaking, rather than an informal encounter added incidentally to the artist’s travels. [1]
The commission belonged to the wider European journey Lawrence made for the Prince Regent. He had been painting sovereigns, military leaders and statesmen connected with Napoleon’s defeat. The National Portrait Gallery’s account identifies Rome as a high point of that mission. A papal portrait gave him an opportunity to engage with one of the most distinguished traditions of European portraiture while contributing to a modern political series. [3]
The number of sittings also gives the image’s apparent immediacy a practical context. The sitter’s face and hands could be studied through repeated encounters, while the large composition required decisions extending well beyond the head. Its powerful unity is the result of an elaborate portrait conception, joining a likeness with costume, furniture and an architectural setting.
A full-length papal portrait
The Royal Collection compares Lawrence’s work with earlier papal portraits by Raphael, Titian and Velázquez, while emphasizing its full-length format. That larger conception allows the long white robes, shoes, cushion and entire throne to take part in the image. The sitter’s authority extends through the surrounding object and the space occupied by his body, rather than remaining concentrated in the head and upper torso. [1]
The format also creates an unusual relation between figure and setting. The high back of the throne rises far above the head, while the canopy occupies much of the upper picture. Below, the gown spreads towards the foreground. The face is comparatively small, but the arrangement of reds and whites continually returns attention to it. Lawrence makes a distant, grand design support an intimate point of recognition.
The earlier comparisons establish a tradition with which the portrait could converse. They need not reduce the painting to a copy of one predecessor. Its contribution lies in adapting papal portraiture to the scale, colour and political purpose of Lawrence’s own commission. The full seated figure gives him room to make those different demands work together.
The face and the hands
The pope’s head turns slightly, and his gaze moves away from a direct frontal encounter. Dark hair frames the pale forehead and cheeks, while small differences around the eyes and mouth give the face an alert but restrained expression. The surrounding red makes the light complexion particularly conspicuous. The likeness remains human in scale even within the immense throne.
The hands establish a second area of attention. One rests near the chair arm, with a ring catching the light; the other holds a small paper against the white clothing. Their unequal positions prevent the seated body from becoming symmetrical. They also connect personal presence with the objects through which office, patronage and action can be suggested.
The paper’s modest size matters. It is one of the few small, specific objects within a composition of enormous fabrics and architecture. Its presence encourages closer inspection after the first impression of colour and grandeur. The detail belongs to the portrait’s historical meaning as well as its arrangement.
Red velvet, white cloth and lace
The pope’s red cape forms a broad band around the head and shoulders, edged with pale trimming. Larger areas of white clothing continue below it, with lace introducing more intricate variations near the hands and lap. Lawrence changes his handling as the materials change. Broad folds and smaller broken highlights make the surfaces seem different in weight and texture.
The red does more than identify ceremonial dress. It connects the body with the chair and curtain, giving the figure a place within a much larger colour structure. The whites interrupt that structure strongly enough to make the sitter remain visible. The eye moves from face to collar, sleeve, hand and gown through a sequence of related lights.
Near the lower edge, red shoes and a cushion reintroduce the colour beneath the white garment. These accents keep the lower body connected with the composition above. They also make the full-length format important to the picture’s balance. Cropping the portrait to its upper half would remove part of the carefully distributed relation between red, white and darker surrounding space.

Watch on YouTubeThe portable throne and canopy
The chair is the sedia gestatoria, the portable papal throne identified in the Royal Collection catalogue. Its high back and substantial arms give the seated pope an imposing architectural framework. The face appears low within that structure, while the broad white gown fills the space below. The portrait represents office through furniture as well as costume. [1]
Above it, the canopy sweeps across the picture in great folds. The curtain introduces another scale of material, much larger than the cape and clothing. Its dark recesses frame the lighter architecture at the left and strengthen the enclosure around the sitter. Lawrence gives the setting a theatrical richness while maintaining a clear hierarchy within it.
That hierarchy is central to the representation of power. The pope does not need to rise or perform an emphatic action. The throne, canopy and monumental space establish authority around a relatively restrained body. The painting joins a person who can appear vulnerable with an office that remains visibly magnificent.
Canova and the returned sculptures
The sculpture gallery at the left gives the background a particular historical purpose. The Royal Collection identifies it as the Braccio Nuovo, associated with the display of classical works in the papal collections under Antonio Canova’s supervision. Canova had helped secure the return of works taken to Paris. The background thus connects the portrait with the cultural recovery that followed Napoleon’s defeat. [1]
The paper held by the pope is inscribed Per Anto. Canova , meaning for Antonio Canova. It brings the sculptor’s name into the sitter’s immediate space, linking the small document with the grand collection displayed behind him. The detail makes cultural patronage part of the image’s account of papal authority. [1]
The gallery should be understood as part of the portrait’s historical arrangement, not simply as neutral decoration. Sculptures, architecture and the sitter form a composed statement about preservation, return and restored prestige. The British patron’s role in the return of looted works also gave that setting significance within George’s own collection, as the later exhibition label explains. [2]
Pius VII and Cardinal Consalvi
Lawrence also painted Cardinal Consalvi in 1819. The Royal Collection’s exhibition account treats the pope and cardinal as paired high points within the Waterloo cycle. Consalvi had represented the papacy at the Congress of Vienna, giving his portrait a direct connection with the diplomatic negotiations commemorated by the larger project. [2]
Considering the two together helps explain the cycle’s range. Military defeat, political negotiation and cultural restoration entered a series that could accommodate different expressions of authority. Pius’s portrait contributes a papal and spiritual presence to that assembly. Its scale makes him a substantial participant in the visual history the patron was constructing.
The relationship does not make every sitter a participant in the same event or every portrait a picture painted at Waterloo. The paintings were made in different places and circumstances. Their later arrangement joined those separate encounters into a commemorative ensemble, with Rome supplying some of its most ambitious images. [2]
From the royal commission to Windsor
The portrait was originally part of a project intended for Carlton House. George’s developing plans for Windsor later included a room made by covering an open courtyard, the Waterloo Chamber. The Royal Collection records the papal portrait there in Joseph Nash’s watercolour of 1844. Its place in the room is therefore a later stage in the life of the 1819 canvas. [1]
The wider cycle’s installation followed the deaths of both Lawrence and George IV. Its display gave portraits made across years and countries a common setting. The papal painting’s Roman imagery could then be encountered within a British royal account of European history, alongside rulers, diplomats and military leaders. The individual portrait and the chamber’s collective meaning remained closely related. [2]
The painting’s distinction lies in how it combines those scales of attention. The face rewards close looking; the throne and fabric establish grandeur; Canova’s name and the distant sculptures connect the sitter with the restoration of an artistic world. The full composition makes those elements intelligible together, giving a particular likeness the reach of a major historical portrait.
