Queen Charlotte by Thomas Lawrence: Introduction
Thomas Lawrence painted Queen Charlotte in 1789, when he was twenty. The seated queen wears a pale dress beneath a dark canopy, with a view towards Eton College Chapel opening beside her. Her carefully observed face occupies a surprisingly small part of the tall canvas. Around it, Lawrence builds a much larger display of fabric, light and royal presence. The painting is now in the National Gallery, London. [1]
Its first audience divided sharply. The king and queen did not admire it, and the picture remained with Lawrence. At the Royal Academy exhibition of 1790, however, it helped establish the young painter’s reputation. That difference between a sitter’s response and a public success is central to the portrait’s history. A picture that disappointed the royal household became one of the most compelling demonstrations of Lawrence’s early ability. [2]

A young painter at Windsor
The opportunity to paint Charlotte came at an important stage in Lawrence’s early career . He had moved from the provincial portrait market into the much more competitive world of London. A large royal portrait offered visibility far beyond an ordinary private commission, but access to the queen did not guarantee a purchase. The National Gallery’s catalogue makes that distinction clear: the work was never formally commissioned and did not enter the Royal Collection. [2]
Lady Cremorne, one of the queen’s attendants and already a sitter for Lawrence, appears to have helped secure the opportunity. An invitation sent by H. Compton instructed the painter to arrive at Windsor on Sunday 27 September 1789 with his painting equipment and examples of his work. The queen was expected to sit the following morning. For a twenty-year-old artist, the invitation was a remarkable opening; its practical instructions also suggest how much preparation a portrait sitting required. [2]
The surviving account is less straightforward than the polished canvas might suggest. Charlotte Papendiek later described a reluctant sitter and a young painter trying to animate her expression. Papendiek knew the household, but she began writing her recollections decades after the events. Her account preserves valuable details while also requiring the caution appropriate to remembered conversation. It is the main narrative behind many familiar stories about this portrait, rather than a transcript made during the sitting. [2]

Details from QUEEN CHARLOTTE
Compare the cropped details with the complete images above. Notice how their colours, shapes and positions contribute to the larger compositions.
A reserved face
The small, carefully modelled face sits above a much broader field of pale fabric. Its quieter expression gives the portrait a different pace from the surrounding display of dress and furnishings.
Hands, lace and bracelets
The hands interrupt the pale folds with warmer colour. Dark accents at the wrists and the open pattern of the lace make this central area more intricate than the broad skirt below.
The queen and the difficult sitting
Charlotte had already sat to several leading painters. Lawrence therefore encountered both an experienced royal subject and an established tradition of representing her. He also met her after a period of considerable strain during George III’s illness. The catalogue places the sitting within that recent anxiety, helping explain why a lively portrait session might have been unwelcome. This historical setting gives the painting added weight without allowing its expression to be treated as a precise record of the queen’s thoughts. [2]
The sitting of 28 September is the only one documented and was probably the only one Charlotte gave Lawrence. According to Papendiek, she initially wore a bonnet, and discussion of alternatives ended with her sitting bareheaded. Her elaborately arranged grey hair consequently became a major feature of the finished likeness. The change matters visually: the soft mass of hair separates the face from the heavy darkness above and makes the head appear luminous. [2]
Papendiek also recalled Lawrence encouraging conversation with the princesses to bring movement to the queen’s expression. The incident fits the broader importance of conversation and characteristic action in his portrait practice, discussed by the National Portrait Gallery. Yet the final picture creates its own measured animation. Charlotte looks slightly aside, while the hands and the different directions of the arms prevent the seated pose from becoming rigid. [2] [3]
Looking at the whole composition
The scale of the surrounding space becomes apparent before the smaller details do. A great sweep of dark curtain occupies the upper part of the canvas. Below it, the figure is concentrated towards the right, while the open landscape supplies a cooler, more distant space on the left. The queen seems sheltered by the canopy and exposed to the viewer at the same time. Lawrence makes the room feel ceremonious without filling it with an accumulation of separate emblems.
The white and pale blue tones of the dress form the largest bright area. They carry the eye from the face down through the torso and across the broad skirt. That downward movement is checked by the hands, jewellery and dark accents at the shoulders. These smaller passages keep returning attention to the sitter within the expansive costume. Her face remains the focus even though it is surrounded by much larger surfaces of paint.
The carpet is essential to this arrangement. Its warm, patterned surface provides a firm foreground beneath the flowing hem, while its dark shapes answer the dark details higher in the picture. At the left, a low architectural ledge marks the transition from interior to landscape. At the right, the chair and curtain hold the figure in place. The result is spacious, but the main forms remain closely connected.
A dress painted through light
The dress is a particularly clear demonstration of Lawrence’s ability to make pale colours varied. Broad cool shadows spread across the skirt, interrupted by warmer cream highlights and narrow sparkling lines. The material changes character as the eye moves across it: some folds seem weighty, while transparent layers appear to float above them. Much of the effect comes from the difference between broad passages and minute touches rather than from a uniformly detailed surface.
Papendiek remembered the original gown as dove-coloured; the catalogue describes Lawrence’s transformation of its appearance into a pale lavender effect. That distinction between a garment and its painted colour is useful. The portrait records clothing through the light, surrounding colours and decisions of the painter. It does not operate as a detached sample of fabric. The cooler hues of the gown become more radiant beside the warm carpet and deep greenish curtain. [2]
The lace at the sleeves introduces another kind of movement. Its irregular edges break up the transition from dress to arms, while the diaphanous apron adds curves and fine highlights across the skirt. These changes of texture soften the formal pose. They also anticipate the importance of white clothing in Lawrence’s portrait of Elizabeth Farren , the other great public success associated with his appearance at the 1790 exhibition. [2]
Jewellery and royal loyalty
The bracelets carry meaning as well as reflected light. They were among the jewels George III had given Charlotte at their marriage. One clasp contained a miniature of the king; the other displayed his royal monogram. Lawrence placed the wrists far enough apart for both to contribute to the composition. Their significance emerges through close looking, within a portrait whose broader effect depends on the pale gown and dark setting. [2]
Judy Egerton’s catalogue discusses the possibility that this conspicuous display expresses Charlotte’s loyalty during the king’s recent troubles. It is a persuasive interpretation because the objects connect the queen’s public position to her marriage. The portrait presents her as an individual sitter while making that relationship materially present on her body. The small scale of the king’s likeness gives the detail a different intimacy from the large setting surrounding her. [2]
The account of how Lawrence finished the ornaments has sometimes encouraged a much broader story about another woman replacing the queen as his model. Papendiek described wearing the bracelets and brooch so he could study them. That assistance concerned the jewellery, rather than establishing that Lawrence painted the queen’s entire figure from Papendiek. Keeping the episode specific preserves its interest: a carefully constructed royal image depended in part on practical help from the household. [2]

Watch on YouTubeEton Chapel and the royal setting
The distant building is Eton College Chapel, visible beyond autumnal trees. Its ordered verticals offer a quiet contrast to the rolling folds of the curtain and the queen’s gown. The landscape opens the portrait beyond the immediate room, giving the seated figure a relationship to the setting around Windsor. It also introduces a cooler band of sky and foliage beside the warm foreground. [2]
The catalogue, drawing on Michael Levey’s interpretation, connects the chapel with traditions of royal and religious benefaction. The curtain similarly gives an ordinary chair something of the authority of a throne. Lawrence did not need to place a crown prominently beside the sitter to establish her rank. Architecture, scale and the canopy transform the surroundings into a framework of monarchy. The discreet treatment of these associations is part of the picture’s sophistication. [2]
Eton also offers a useful connection with Arthur Atherley , whose portrait again incorporates the chapel. The recurrence shows how an identifiable building could serve different subjects. With Charlotte it belongs to a royal landscape; with a young Etonian it connects a sitter with his education. The building’s meaning depends on the person and setting around it, rather than carrying one fixed significance wherever it appears. [2]

Changes beneath the surface
The portrait’s present appearance includes both Lawrence’s revisions and the effects of later treatment. The National Gallery catalogue records changes to the outline of the hair and to the background around the head, visible through X-radiography. Such alterations reveal an artist adjusting the relationship between likeness and surrounding space. The apparently assured final arrangement emerged through changes to paint already on the canvas. [2]
The painting was cleaned in 1960. Egerton records generally good condition apart from a tear in the distant landscape, while noting that lining had flattened raised passages of paint. Lining reinforces a canvas by attaching another support behind it; in this instance it affected the texture of the original surface. The small highlights therefore need to be understood through both the artist’s handling and the painting’s subsequent physical history. [2]
These findings help distinguish what can be seen from what can be inferred. The changes around the hair are material evidence of revision. Papendiek’s recollections offer a different kind of evidence about the circumstances of painting it. The two do not have to be turned into a single dramatic story in which every alteration answers a complaint from the sitter. Together they show a portrait shaped by observation, negotiation and further work after the documented sitting.
Rejected at court and admired in public
Lawrence remained at Windsor after the sitting and worked on the picture, but royal acceptance did not follow. The proposed plan to have it engraved and sent to Hanover was never carried through. The portrait stayed with the painter. The king and queen’s disappointment is therefore more than a colourful anecdote: it explains why this image of a reigning queen passed into the artist’s own possessions rather than becoming a royal commission. [2]
The Royal Academy exhibition offered a different setting in which to judge it. In 1790 visitors could compare Lawrence’s work with portraits by established painters. Reviews praised the likeness, handling and effect of the background. Egerton’s account of that reception shows that qualities unpersuasive to the royal sitters could impress spectators looking at a painting in a public exhibition. The portrait’s success belonged to that wider encounter between the canvas and its audience. [2]
Elizabeth Farren’s portrait attracted exceptional attention at the same exhibition. Seen together, the two works demonstrated Lawrence’s range: an actress in an open landscape and a queen seated beneath a canopy, both represented through animated relationships between figure and setting. Their impact helped establish his position in London. When he later became Principal Painter to the King in 1792, the earlier rejection of Charlotte’s portrait had clearly not prevented his advancement. [2]
From the studio to the National Gallery
The painting remained with Lawrence throughout his life. After his death in 1830, it appeared in the studio sale at Christie’s in June 1831, where Sir Matthew White Ridley bought it. It then descended through the Ridley family. This route explains why a portrait of such a prominent sitter spent so long outside the royal and national collections. Its subject’s status did not determine its ownership. [2]
The National Gallery purchased it in 1927, shortly after it had been offered at auction from the Ridley trustees. Its current inventory number is NG4257. The museum’s acquisition placed an early masterpiece of Lawrence’s career within a public collection, where its scale, textiles and controlled setting can be considered alongside the British portrait tradition to which it belongs. [1] [2]
The portrait’s continuing interest lies in the coexistence of several kinds of presence. Charlotte appears as a particular woman, a royal wife and a figure within an imposing ceremonial design. The small painted tokens of her marriage sit within a much larger display of artistic ambition. Looking from the bracelet clasps to the hair, then out towards the canopy and distant chapel, reveals how carefully Lawrence joined those different scales.
