Isabella Wolff by Thomas Lawrence: Introduction

Isabella Wolff leans over an open volume, her right hand resting against her forehead as she studies a printed figure. Thomas Lawrence presents her in profile, surrounded by pale satin, patterned fabric and deep red upholstery. The painting belongs to the Art Institute of Chicago, 1922.4461, which dates it to 1803–15. The image in the book represents Michelangelo’s Delphic Sibyl from the Sistine Chapel ceiling. [1]

The portrait combines a personal likeness with a sustained reflection on looking at art. The sitter’s turning body echoes another of Michelangelo’s Sibyls, while the printed image directs attention towards an older artistic tradition. The rich surfaces remain unmistakably Lawrence’s: the satin folds, turban and shawl turn the act of contemplation into a brilliant arrangement of light and colour.

A commission within a family circle

The Art Institute records that the portrait was commissioned in 1802 or 1803 by the sitter’s sister, Clarissa, Mrs Walter Hill, of The Rocklands near Goodrich in Herefordshire. This family commission provides a specific setting for the work’s beginnings. The picture was intended for someone close to its subject, rather than being a general exercise in depicting a woman reading. [1]

The museum also describes Wolff as one of Lawrence’s intimate friends. That relationship helps explain the portrait’s significance within his work, but the painting offers a carefully composed public image as well as a likeness of someone he knew. Its studied pose and elaborate costume should not be confused with an unplanned glimpse of private life.

The family connection continued through the picture’s later history. It descended through the Hill family, and a later account transcribed a label suggesting that Lawrence had presented the portrait to Mrs Hill in 1815. The museum treats that presentation as possible rather than certain. A commission and a subsequent gift tradition can both belong to the object’s history without supplying an exact account of every payment or arrangement. [1]

What the date range means

The collection dates the painting to 1803–15, and it appeared at the Royal Academy in 1815. The long interval is a notable part of the portrait’s history, but it does not mean Lawrence painted continuously on the canvas for twelve years. A work could remain in progress through periods of activity and delay. [1]

Jacob Simon’s study of Lawrence’s practice describes how portrait commissions could extend beyond the sittings needed to establish a likeness. Costume, hands and surrounding passages presented further demands, and the artist’s commitments could delay completion. Those general circumstances help make a long production history intelligible without reconstructing an undocumented schedule for this particular canvas. [2]

The 1815 exhibition gives the portrait a clear point of public presentation. It brought a picture commissioned within a family circle before the Academy’s audience. The later label tradition also associates that year with its passage to Mrs Hill, although the evidence for exhibition is more direct than the reported gift wording.

The Delphic Sibyl in the book

The open volume is central to the portrait’s meaning. The Art Institute identifies the printed figure as the Delphic Sibyl from Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel ceiling. The Sibyls were legendary priestesses associated with enigmatic prophecies. Their presence in Renaissance art gave Lawrence a subject through which learning, imagination and artistic tradition could meet. [1]

Wolff does not merely hold the book as an attribute. Her lowered eyes and angled head direct attention towards its page, making looking itself part of the composition. The printed figure occupies the left foreground, close enough to be recognised as an image within the larger painted image.

The distinction between fresco and print is important. Wolff is contemplating a portable reproduction, not standing beneath the ceiling in Rome. The portrait therefore shows how an earlier masterpiece could be encountered through a book. A picture rooted in one place becomes available for private study elsewhere through printed form.

That relation gives the volume a different role from a generic literary accessory. It links the sitter with a particular work of art and gives the viewer a reason to connect her pose with the surrounding artistic references. The object also establishes a practical focus for the hand, tilted head and direction of the gaze.

A pose that echoes another Sibyl

The museum distinguishes the image on the page from the figure echoed by Wolff’s own pose. The printed subject is the Delphic Sibyl, while the sitter’s twisting arrangement recalls another Sibyl on the same ceiling. Looking at the portrait as a simple illustration of one Renaissance figure would miss this more elaborate relationship. [1]

Wolff’s upper body turns towards the book, while the broad folds of the skirt establish a different movement below. The right arm rises towards the forehead and the other descends along the chair. Those unequal directions create a winding path through the figure rather than a rigid frontal presentation.

The profile contributes to the sense of inward attention. The sitter does not return the viewer’s gaze, as many of Lawrence’s portrait subjects do. Her attention appears occupied elsewhere. The viewer is invited to observe an act of contemplation, with the book supplying a visible explanation for it.

The composition nevertheless remains highly arranged. Lawrence makes the curve of the arm, the line of the neck and the broad movement of satin work together. The image joins a believable seated person with a pose shaped by the study of older art.

Turban, shawl and imagined antiquity

The turban introduces pale fabric above the head, with a decorated band breaking its surface into smaller points of colour and light. It connects the costume with the portrait’s reference to Sibyls. The Art Institute relates such dress to Western imaginings of the Near East that had become associated with these figures in art. [1]

The costume should therefore be read as part of a pictorial tradition. It does not establish the actual dress of a classical priestess, nor does it turn Wolff into the literal subject of Michelangelo’s fresco. Lawrence uses an association familiar within European art to give the sitter’s presentation a learned and imaginative character.

The patterned shawl adds a further kind of richness. Its reds, blues and gold tones run along the shoulder, across the support beneath the book and down beside the body. These smaller patterns contrast with the larger, luminous folds of the white gown. Their distribution ties the book and figure together.

A rose at the bodice supplies another concentrated accent. Its pink petals interrupt the pale satin without competing with the face. Along with the small jewels and decorative borders, it rewards looking after the broad composition has been taken in.

Painting satin and light

The gown is one of the portrait’s most striking achievements. Light follows raised folds across the sleeves, bodice and skirt, while warmer shadows gather between them. Lawrence varies the size and direction of the marks so that the fabric appears supple, reflective and gathered around the seated body.

The long sleeve at the right of the image descends through a sequence of bright ridges. The raised sleeve on the other side curves upwards towards the hand and forehead. These two movements connect the costume with the pose. The fabric does not simply cover an already arranged figure; its folds help make the arrangement visible.

The white is also balanced against the red upholstery. A broad dark red field behind the profile makes the pale neck, hand and turban stand out. Lower down, richly coloured cushions and patterned cloth support the open book. The setting gives the satin a contrasting environment in which to shine.

The Art Institute particularly emphasises Lawrence’s ability to evoke clothing textures in this work. That visual effect does not require a claim that every pale passage contains the same pigment or was painted in one session. The observed changes of light and handling are sufficient to explain how the material becomes persuasive. [1]

A likeness and the work around it

Simon’s account of Lawrence’s practice discusses Elizabeth Croft posing for drapery in connection with the Wolff portrait. This is evidence about the making of costume passages, not a reason to replace Wolff’s identity or describe the whole figure as another sitter. Portrait production could involve different kinds of study around an established likeness. [2]

The distinction helps explain how a portrait could remain a representation of a particular person while its surrounding elements required further work. Hands, dress and supports could be studied separately or with help. The finished picture brings those decisions into a coherent arrangement that no longer announces every stage of its production.

Wolff’s face remains the anchor of the image. The profile is clear against the red, and the hand near the forehead gives the likeness a particular action. The older artistic references and sumptuous costume enrich that identity rather than dissolving it into an anonymous Sibyl.

Older art in a modern likeness

Lawrence’s later portrait of Julia, Lady Peel offers a useful comparison. The Frick Collection proposes that its elaborate hat and colour relate to Rubens’s portrait of Susanna Lunden, a painting owned by Lady Peel’s husband. In that work, an older portrait tradition may have helped shape the sitter’s presentation through costume and design. [3]

Wolff’s picture makes the encounter with earlier art more explicit by including the printed image itself. The viewer can see what occupies her attention rather than relying entirely on a resemblance between poses. Lawrence joins an actual likeness with an imaginative artistic association, allowing the sitter to remain herself while her pose recalls a different figure.

The comparison also changes how the book is understood. It is not merely a prop added to suggest education. Its particular image connects the sitter’s action, costume and bodily arrangement with a recognisable artistic source. The portrait makes that relationship part of its visible subject.

From the Hill family to Chicago

The Art Institute’s provenance traces the painting through descendants of Clarissa Hill, including the Reverend Walter Henry Hill and Walter Guy Hill. It also records a period on loan to Isabella Coke from 1846 to 1870. These details show a portrait continuing within an extended family network long after its first exhibition. [1]

The museum places its probable sale between 1904 and 1906, while recording it in Mrs W. W. Kimball’s collection in Chicago by 1920. It was on loan to the Art Institute in 1920–21 and entered the museum through her bequest in 1922. Those are successive stages, not a single acquisition event. [1]

Its passage into a public collection broadened the audience for a work originally commissioned by the sitter’s sister. The act of looking remains at its centre: Wolff studies the printed Sibyl, while visitors study Lawrence’s arrangement of her face, costume and surroundings. The portrait makes that layered encounter both intellectually specific and visually immediate.
