William Wilberforce by Thomas Lawrence: Introduction
William Wilberforce’s face emerges from an unfinished field of drawn clothing and exposed canvas in Thomas Lawrence’s late portrait. The head is tilted, the expression attentive, and one arm rests across the front of the seated figure. The National Portrait Gallery dates the painting to 1828 and records it as NPG 3, one of the earliest portraits to enter its collection. [1]
The work brings a famous public figure unusually close to the viewer. Lawrence resolved the face, white neckcloth and dark collar while leaving much of the body in outline. The difference between those areas is integral to the picture’s appearance. It also connects the portrait with the circumstances of Wilberforce’s sittings and with the later decision to preserve a compelling likeness in its incomplete state.

A portrait after retirement
Wilberforce sat to Lawrence after retiring from Parliament. Sir Robert Inglis paid towards the portrait, and Richard Walker’s extended National Portrait Gallery catalogue records 75 guineas on account. The commission joined personal admiration with the desire to preserve a likeness of a public reformer in later life. [2]
The catalogue identifies a first sitting on 14 May 1828 and quotes Wilberforce describing it as a pleasant experience. It also reports his efforts to arrange further appointments, while treating the possibility of another completed sitting as uncertain. The portrait was nevertheless still incomplete when Inglis recovered it from Lawrence’s studio in 1830. A strong surviving head did not mean that the larger composition had reached completion. [2]
An earlier letter discussed by Walker, dated April 1826, recalled Lawrence’s promise of the previous year. The commission was therefore being anticipated before the documented 1828 sitting. This longer history of requests and appointments helps separate the beginnings of a project from the date of the surviving likeness. [2]
These circumstances help explain why the image should not be treated as an informal drawing made in a single passing encounter. It was an oil portrait intended as a paid commission, with a figure and setting begun around the likeness. Its present appearance preserves an interrupted project whose central achievement was already persuasive enough to retain.
The face and the viewer
The face is positioned above and to the left of the canvas centre. Wilberforce tilts his head towards the viewer, while his eyes establish a direct relationship across the picture’s surface. The mouth is slightly parted, and the cheeks retain warm colour. Lawrence gives the sitter an alert presence without requiring an expansive gesture.
A dark painted area surrounds the head, separating it sharply from the pale canvas beyond. The effect draws attention towards the face before the viewer follows the figure’s looser outlines. Dark hair, collar and surrounding paint form an irregular enclosure within the larger, mostly unresolved rectangle.
The white neckcloth gives the head a clear base. Its light shape contrasts with the dark collar and the warmer flesh above, while a small red passage appears below it. These concentrated areas of colour make the completed likeness feel substantial even though the clothing around them remains incomplete.
The uneven distribution of finish also influences how we read expression. Little competes with the eyes, mouth and turn of the head. The painting can seem particularly immediate because those features are surrounded by visible work in progress. That impression belongs to the surviving image, rather than proving that Lawrence intended to stop at this stage.
The drawn body
Below the head, dark lines establish the coat, bent arm and parts of the hand. The right arm crosses the front of the figure, while a sweeping outline extends towards the right side of the canvas. The body is readable, but its forms are not developed into the weight and surface of finished clothing.
The repeated lines are especially revealing. They offer more than a single clean boundary around the figure, suggesting an arrangement explored and adjusted through drawing. The pale field remains visible between them. The contrast allows the viewer to distinguish the planned composition from the areas already resolved in paint.
The portrait’s horizontal format gives this unfinished body considerable room. Its width exceeds its height, unlike many of Lawrence’s upright full-length portraits. The seated figure spreads across the canvas, bringing the head into relation with the bent arm and the long movement to the right. The dimensions belong to this broad composition, not to a cropped head study. [1]
Keeping the whole image visible is therefore important. A close crop around the face would show a powerful likeness, but remove much of what makes this particular object distinctive. The exposed canvas and drawn figure are part of the painting’s history as well as its present visual balance.
Posture, discomfort and the sittings
The National Portrait Gallery relates Wilberforce’s unusual posture to a spinal condition that made prolonged sitting difficult. Its expanded catalogue account also mentions the steel support he wore. This biographical information offers a context for the pose; it should not be treated as a diagnosis discovered by inspecting the painted body. [1]
The distinction matters because an incomplete figure can invite overconfident interpretation. A drawn contour does not reveal everything about a sitter’s anatomy, clothing or comfort. The museum’s account supplies historical context that the visible marks alone cannot establish.
Accounts of the sitting history also differ in their emphasis. The public display text presents the portrait as the result of an encounter that was not followed by a return, while the expanded catalogue records attempts to arrange further sittings. The safest point of agreement is that Lawrence obtained a striking likeness and left the larger portrait unfinished. [1]
The image itself remains attentive to a person rather than only to physical difficulty. The tilted head can suggest engagement, and the warm face retains an impression of responsiveness. Historical discomfort and a lively painted presence can coexist without one becoming the complete explanation of the other.
What an unfinished portrait can reveal
Jacob Simon’s study of Lawrence at work describes the artist’s use of drawing directly on the canvas and the varied circumstances in which portraits were completed, delayed or abandoned. It also explains why an unfinished surface needs to be considered in relation to a particular object’s history. There was no single schedule governing every commission. [3]
Wilberforce’s portrait gives unusually clear visual access to the relation between drawing and painted likeness. The head has volume, colour and expression, while parts of the body remain a network of lines. A viewer can recognise both the sitter and the artist’s developing arrangement without confusing them with separate finished works.
Walker’s physical description identifies the clothing, chair and right hand holding an eyeglass as black-chalk work on grey-primed canvas. That account gives names to features that can otherwise seem simply like dark outlines on a pale field. The eyeglass also supplies a small personal object within the broadly drawn figure. [2]
The contrast is informative, but it is not a complete technical analysis. The visible brown and pale areas do not identify their pigments or establish the exact layer sequence throughout the canvas. Such conclusions would require object-specific examination beyond the image. Here the most secure evidence is the difference in development across the surface.
The painting can be compared with Lawrence’s unfinished portrait of Wellington . Both concentrate a resolved likeness above a less developed body, but their patrons and histories differ. Both patrons resisted posthumous completion: Lady Jersey in Wellington’s case, and Inglis in Wilberforce’s. The decisions preserved different likenesses whose incompleteness later became a central part of their appeal. [2]

Walker’s catalogue quotes John Harford’s recollection that Inglis would not allow another hand to add to the portrait. Harford also remembered it hanging in Inglis’s dining room for more than twenty-five years, lit by a shaded lamp at the side. That account describes an unfinished picture valued within a domestic setting before it became a national museum object. [2]
The recollection gives the portrait a social life beyond the sittings. Guests could encounter Wilberforce’s painted face while gathered around a dining table. The apparently responsive expression took on meaning in relation to the people who remembered him, rather than only through a public display label.
Admiration was not universal. Walker contrasts Harford’s praise of the sitter’s sweetness with later criticism of an expression judged overly affected. Those differing reactions show how the same features can be read in contrasting ways. The portrait’s directness does not guarantee agreement about the character it conveys. [2]
Wilberforce and the wider abolition campaign
Wilberforce’s parliamentary campaigning gave the portrait much of its later public significance. His work formed part of a larger movement: Thomas Clarkson and Granville Sharp helped organise opposition, while publications by formerly enslaved people such as Olaudah Equiano, petitions and boycotts mobilised support outside Parliament. Parliament’s historical account distinguishes the abolition of the British slave trade in 1807 from the later ending of colonial slavery. [4]
A portrait of Wilberforce can illuminate his public memory without making one individual stand for the whole struggle. Its focus on a recognisable face is powerful precisely because a portrait concentrates attention. Reading it alongside the wider campaign restores something of the collective activity that the isolated likeness cannot show.
The painting does not depict a parliamentary speech, petition or scene of emancipation. Its political meaning comes through the sitter’s identity and subsequent reception. Lawrence offers a person whom viewers could associate with reform; the surrounding historical knowledge supplies the connection between that face and public action.
George Richmond’s adaptations
The unfinished painting supplied the basis for later copies and adaptations by George Richmond. Walker records a three-quarter-length completion of 1834 made for St John’s College, Cambridge, with an entry in Richmond’s account book. Such a work extended the likeness into a more fully developed figure rather than completing Lawrence’s original canvas. [2]
The distinction explains why a finished image with a recognisably similar head may look different from NPG 3. A later painter could preserve the likeness while supplying a new or more resolved body. The added passages belong to that later work and should not be used to imagine that Lawrence personally finished them.
The catalogue also records a stipple engraving published by John Murray in 1838. The print belongs to the circulation of Wilberforce’s image after the sitter’s and artist’s deaths. It is a reproduction after the portrait, with a separate medium, maker and publication history. [2]
An early National Portrait Gallery acquisition
The National Portrait Gallery was founded in 1856, with the idea that portraits of significant people could inspire a national audience. This painting was among its earliest acquisitions. The current object credit records a gift from the executors of Sir Robert Harry Inglis in 1857. Walker’s provenance explains an intermediate stage: the portrait was deposited in the British Museum following Inglis’s death in 1855, before its transfer to the new Gallery. Foundation, earlier deposit and final transfer are different events. [2] [1]
The Gallery’s interpretation connects the work’s lifelike presence with its early institutional purpose. Wilberforce’s face could bring a celebrated reformer before visitors as an apparently immediate human presence. The painting’s value did not depend on a fully completed costume or a grand historical setting.
Its survival also shows how judgments about completion can differ from judgments about significance. The commission remained incomplete, yet the likeness was sufficiently valued to be kept and later enter a national collection. The unfinished state became part of what subsequent viewers found compelling in the work.
The painting now supports two closely related forms of attention. It encourages recognition of a historical person, while exposing something of how a likeness was made. The tilted head and engaged expression draw us towards Wilberforce; the broad, pale canvas and drawn body return attention to Lawrence’s work. Neither aspect can fully explain the image without the other.

Frequently Asked Questions
The current National Portrait Gallery object record dates the portrait to 1828. Its expanded catalogue account gives a first sitting on 14 May that year.
The larger portrait remained incomplete. The Gallery relates the sitting difficulties to Wilberforce’s physical discomfort and records attempts to arrange further appointments.
Richard Walker’s extended catalogue records a payment by Sir Robert Inglis of 75 guineas on account. This is not stated as the final total price.
The current credit records a gift from Inglis’s executors in 1857. It was among the Gallery’s earliest acquisitions.
He led parliamentary campaigning within a much wider movement that included Black abolitionist voices, organisers, petitioners and boycotts.
