Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres was a skilled painter of portraits and religious scenes, and his use of colour and precise detail makes his work ideally suited to art print reproductions for those looking to enjoy some of his career highlights within their own home.

Ingres' depictions of historical figures in grand scenes of opulence and celebration will always strike a chord with the art public who appreciate this combination of artistic qualities alongside historical narratives. Some of his most reproduced paintings include the likes of Grande Odalisque, The Apotheosis of Homer, Napoleon I on His Imperial Throne and Joan of Arc at the Coronation of Charles VII. We can compare his success in this regard to the likes of Jacques Louis David, Nicolas Poussin, Eugene Delacroix and Theodore Gericault who were related to the Neo-Classical and Romanticist movements which domainted French art during that period.

The classical style of Ingres makes his detailed portraits best suited to high quality frames, perhaps with a small card to sit between frame and artwork, and allow the artist's qualities to better catch the eye. His use of colour was bright, often capturing various types of clothing with a beautiful charm which will attract even the most occasional art fan. His work is instantly accessible, even for those unaware of any historical connections, where as some modern art requires an understanding of symbolism or other expressive content.

You may have to consider the style of your own home to understand if it is suited to art such as this. Classical styles may not suit some modern homes, where minimalist interiors would be better suited to modern art and the abstraction that that often uses. A cottage, for example, with its old fashioned architecture would be better for works from artists such as those mentioned in this section, though any size of print must be inline with the wall on which it is placed. An oversized painting can over-dominate a room. Thankfully, there are endless numbers of options available on sizes of artworks, with some even having individual details of the canvas available separately. It is worth trying out a number of retailers to find the best combination available for your purchase. With so much time having passed since his career took hold, copyright has passed on the paintings of Ingres, meaning most retailers can offer a full selection of his paintings without having to pay additional charges.

There is a variety of quality in the market regarding art print reproductions - the quality of the ink and paper used can lead to very different results, as can the original artwork from which the reproduction is made. In some cases blurred paintings are used and the resulting print can be very poor. National retailers tend to provide a more consistent service and are more reliable, though their prices may be slightly higher as a result.
