Abigail Adams by Gilbert Stuart: Introduction

A white cap frames Abigail Adams’s face, while an embroidered shawl spreads across her shoulders and warm red dress. Seated close to the front of the picture, she looks towards the viewer above a lightly described hand. Gilbert Stuart began the portrait in 1800 and finished it in 1815, retaining an earlier likeness within a later arrangement of cap and shawl. [1]

Abigail’s own comments make that delay unusually vivid. She valued the portrait as something her children could inherit, yet eventually questioned whether her grandchildren would recognize its younger face. The picture’s history turns on that gap between preserving a likeness and keeping it current. [2]

One portrait with two periods

The portrait originated while John Adams was president and the couple were in Philadelphia. On 20 May 1800 Stuart acknowledged Abigail’s payment of one hundred dollars. That receipt anchors the early history of her picture more securely than later recollections of how long the family had been waiting. Work had begun, but the painting was still far from delivery. [13]

Within days, her nephew William Smith Shaw reported that the likeness was attracting visitors to Stuart’s studio. His account, quoted by Miles, shows that an unfinished portrait could already be admired and recognized. Early praise and eventual completion were separate events. For Abigail, the painter’s ability to capture her appearance did not resolve the practical problem of obtaining the canvas. [13]

Stuart eventually completed it in Boston in 1815. Miles identifies the face with the earlier sittings, while the cap and embroidered net shawl belong to the fashion of the later period. This reading draws partly on textile specialist Nathalie Rothstein’s work, cited in the catalogue. The painting brings together an earlier face and a later presentation of dress. [14]

That history is more complicated than an untouched head awaiting a few final accessories. Family evidence records further sittings after Stuart moved to Boston, including references in Stephen Peabody’s diary in 1809. Their occurrence does not overturn Miles’s conclusion that the earlier likeness survives. It does prevent the fifteen-year interval from becoming a simple claim that Abigail never returned to the studio. [15]

The double date acknowledges those separated stages without assigning every mark to a particular year. It is a guide to the portrait’s development, rather than a precise inventory of original and revised paint. A viewer can recognize the earlier likeness and later costume while understanding that the canvas has a continuous material history.

1

The face and surrounding lace

The face is enclosed by pale fabric, small curls and a ruffled edge below the chin. Subtle grey and pink passages shape the features beside these brighter accents.

2

The cap and its bow

Looped ribbons and repeated lace marks build a complex light shape above the head. Small shadows between the folds prevent the white fabric from becoming a flat outline.

The transparent-looking shawl

Repeated white patterns sit over fabric through which darker colour remains visible. Compare the denser decorative edges with the lighter, more open areas between them.

Hands, cuff and chair

The hands meet near the lower edge, beside a white cuff and the chair’s warm-coloured arm. Their quieter arrangement balances the much more elaborate fabric around the head.

Abigail’s face and formal dress

The cap gives the head a distinctive silhouette. White folds rise above the forehead and gather around the brown curls, with a broad ribbon and bow near the top. Its pale edges stand out against the subdued background. These details create an elaborate frame around the comparatively direct arrangement of eyes, nose and mouth.

The face has warm pink cheeks, a long nose and slightly raised brows. Stuart places cooler tones around the contours, giving the head volume without outlining every boundary equally. The gaze meets the viewer, while the shoulders turn to one side. The resulting combination of a turned body and an outward-looking face allows the sitter to appear both settled in the chair and attentive to someone before her.

The shawl makes a different kind of frame. Its transparent fabric reveals the red dress beneath, while the embroidered pattern crosses the shoulders and curves towards the hand. Light strokes suggest the border and decoration without making the entire cloth opaque. The distinction between the fabric and its ornament is one of the painting’s clearest demonstrations of Stuart’s selective handling. [16]

The chair supplies a warmer surround below. Its patterned upholstery and wooden edges give the figure a substantial place to sit, while the brown ground remains free of a detailed room. The hand and shawl occupy the lower area, drawing attention down from the face before the pale fabric leads it upwards again.

Formal clothing establishes the conditions in which Abigail is represented, but it does not make her expression a complete account of her character. The letters offer firmer access to her judgments about the portrait than an attempt to read determination, disappointment or political principle directly from painted features. Her written response and Stuart’s arrangement can illuminate one another without being treated as interchangeable evidence.

Her own voice in the long delay

Abigail’s involvement extended beyond agreeing to sit. She paid for the painting and later supplied the receipt when her family tried to secure it. In 1801 Thomas Boylston Adams found that her portrait had been seized in connection with Stuart’s debts. He persuaded the sheriff to release the claim after explaining that the work was already paid for, then left it in the artist’s hands. The unfinished canvas had become entangled in someone else’s financial affairs. [17]

Her reaction combined irritation with a wish to preserve the likeness. The difficulty was not simply that an artist worked slowly: a valued family possession remained beyond her control. In December 1804 she forwarded the receipt to John Quincy, who hoped it might help persuade Stuart to finish. Her description of the painter, “Genius is always eccentrick,” accompanied criticism of his failure to fulfil engagements. The words are quoted through Miles’s account of the correspondence. [18]

By June 1815 her emphasis had changed. In a letter to John Quincy she reported that Stuart had promised to complete her portrait, but she now thought the earlier face unfamiliar to the younger generation. Her remark, “I cared not whether he ever finishd it,” measures the cost of delay through lost recognition. The face that once seemed worth preserving had become a record of a person her grandchildren might not remember. [19]

Her further observation that the portrait resembled John Quincy adds another possibility. A likeness could preserve family resemblance across generations even when it no longer matched the sitter’s present appearance. Her response moves between those two forms of recognition, finding a connection to her son in an image she felt had ceased to represent herself. [19]

The letter’s recollection of a twenty-year wait is approximate. The 1800 receipt supplies the firmer starting point. Reading her words alongside that document allows the complaint to retain its force without turning an imprecise memory into a different date for the painting.

How the pair belongs together

Abigail’s portrait was developed alongside John Adams’s likeness , now also in the National Gallery. Their related formats, quiet backgrounds and complementary turns make them companion pictures, often called pendants. The pairing gives the marriage a visible form while preserving separate individuals. Each sitter looks outward, inviting a viewer to encounter the two faces in turn.

The colour relationships help distinguish them. John’s dark coat concentrates attention on his head and white neckcloth. Abigail’s red dress, pale shawl and larger visible area of upholstery distribute interest more widely across her body and setting. The comparison shows how related portraits could share an overall dignity without relying on identical arrangements of clothing and furniture.

Their completion histories are also different. John sat again in 1815, and Miles identifies his finished face principally with that later encounter. Abigail’s portrait carried the earlier likeness forward within the revised clothing. They reached completion in the same period while preserving different moments in the sitters’ lives. [20]

This difference gives Abigail’s comments additional significance. She thought John’s later portrait would be valued precisely because it recorded him in old age. At the same time, she questioned the usefulness of her own earlier face. Her response was sensitive to the kind of remembrance each image made possible, rather than simply preferring younger or more flattering appearances. [19]

The pair also helps locate this episode within Stuart’s biography . His continued reputation for likeness kept the family engaged despite repeated disappointment. Their criticism and admiration belonged to the same relationship: his skill gave the paintings value, while his delay made securing them an increasingly difficult task. The portraits preserve that tension alongside their representation of the marriage.

Technique, revision and finish

The National Gallery’s 1995 technical notes describe Abigail’s portrait as painted on a tightly woven twill fabric, lined to another support. A thin white ground lies beneath fluid, sometimes transparent planes of colour. Thicker paint picks out the shawl’s ornament and highlights on the cap and chair. This object-specific account explains how the surface combines broad modelling with small accents. [21]

The distinction is particularly apparent in the shawl. Its transparency depends on allowing the dress and shadows to remain visible through the lighter fabric. More solid touches establish the embroidered border. A few strokes can therefore serve different purposes: some describe a translucent material, while others describe decoration lying upon it. Looking between them makes the variety of Stuart’s painting technique easier to appreciate.

The support supplied evidence for the painting’s early origin. Miles compared its fabric and stretcher with John’s portrait and with the Liston portraits made in Philadelphia in 1800. She also discussed X-radiographs in distinguishing the Gallery canvases from pictures previously proposed as their earlier studies. The argument combines material comparison with documentary history; it does not depend solely on whether a face looks early or late. [22]

An early version of Abigail’s likeness at the Massachusetts Historical Society provides another kind of evidence. Miles identifies it as apparently a copy by an unknown artist, preserving the appearance of the unfinished picture. Its value as a record does not require calling it Stuart’s original life study. Copy, working state and completed canvas are separate questions in the portrait’s history. [22]

Later conservation has changed how the surface can be seen. In 2012 the National Gallery reported removing discoloured varnish from both Adams portraits, revealing details of faces and clothing. That announcement places the older catalogue’s observations of a discoloured coating in their proper historical setting. It describes a later treatment, without supplying a complete account of every intervention or establishing the painting’s condition indefinitely. [23]

The lively handling visible in the finished portrait should also be distinguished from the period when it was incomplete. Lightly worked passages can contribute to a convincing material effect. The history of delay is documented, but it does not make every economical stroke evidence that Stuart abandoned the task.

Family remembrance and later collection

The portrait’s survival answers part of Abigail’s original wish. A painted likeness could remain available to descendants after a parent’s death, even if different generations recognized different things in it. Her own letters suggest how that recognition might change: present resemblance could fade while family resemblance and the knowledge of an earlier self remained.

The National Gallery records the canvas in John Quincy Adams’s possession, then with his son Charles Francis Adams, followed by Charles’s son Brooks Adams. It subsequently belonged to Brooks’s niece Abigail Adams Homans, Mrs Robert Homans, whose gift brought it to the Gallery in 1954. The recorded descent is shared with John’s companion portrait. [3]

The Old House at Peacefield in Quincy offers a related family setting. The National Park Service identifies it as the home of four Adams generations between 1788 and 1927. A photograph by Kenneth C. Zirkel, taken in June 2014, shows the house and garden as a modern historic place. Its rooms and grounds developed over generations; this exterior view illustrates the family’s connection with Quincy rather than Stuart’s studio or an authenticated setting for the painted chair. [24] [25]

The likeness also reached people beyond the family. Miles records an engraving by G. F. Storm for the 1839 volume of The National Portrait Gallery of Distinguished Americans , and a later copy by Stuart’s daughter Jane. These separate objects carried Abigail’s appearance into other settings and media. They should not be mistaken for additional stages of work on the National Gallery’s canvas. [26]

The Gallery’s exhibition history records the painting in the 1880 Stuart exhibition at Boston’s Museum of Fine Arts and on loan to the White House in 1975–76. Those appearances gave a likeness once pursued for family remembrance a place in later institutional presentations of American portraiture. [3]

Today the portrait can be read through several connected encounters: Abigail before Stuart in 1800, the family’s prolonged efforts to obtain the work, later costume and completion, and subsequent viewers meeting the preserved face. Her letters keep her own judgments present within that history. They make the question of likeness something the sitter considered and contested, as well as something the painter attempted to achieve.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is the portrait dated 1800/1815?

Stuart began it in Philadelphia in 1800 and completed it in Boston in 1815. Miles identifies the earlier face within a later cap and shawl. [1] [14]

Did Abigail ever sit again during the delay?

Yes. The correspondence and diary evidence discussed by Miles include further sittings after Stuart moved to Boston. That does not mean her finished face was wholly repainted in 1815. [15]

Was the painting cleaned after the 1995 catalogue?

The National Gallery’s 2012 conservation announcement reports removal of discoloured varnish from both John and Abigail Adams portraits. The older coating description should therefore be read as historical. [23]

Who owns it now?

The National Gallery of Art, Washington, accession 1954.7.2. It was given by Mrs. Robert Homans in 1954 and remains distinct from copies and engravings after it. [3]

Discussion

Look again at the images and ideas explored in Abigail Adams by Gilbert Stuart. These editorial prompts invite your observations.

Follow the different kinds of white paint around the cap, face and shawl. How does Stuart suggest opaque folds and transparent fabric? Consider Abigail’s concern that younger relatives would not recognize her earlier face: what kinds of remembrance can a portrait preserve when it no longer resembles its sitter’s present appearance?
