John Adams by Gilbert Stuart: Introduction
John Adams turns towards the viewer with flushed cheeks, pale hair and a watchful gaze. His black coat merges into the surrounding brown, leaving the face and white neckcloth sharply visible. Gilbert Stuart began this portrait around 1800, while Adams was president, but returned to it in 1815 after renewed sittings. The surviving canvas therefore joins an early commission with a much later likeness. [1]
Its long history involved unpaid debts, frustrated family members and repeated efforts to obtain the painting. Yet the letters describing those difficulties also explain its value: the Adams family wanted a recognizable person to remain present for children and grandchildren after the sitter was gone. [2]

A portrait begun and finished fifteen years apart
The unusual date, circa 1800/1815, identifies two important periods of work on one canvas. It does not mean that Stuart spent fifteen years painting continuously. He began portraits of both John and Abigail Adams in Philadelphia, left them unfinished, and completed them in Boston after a long interruption. By then the couple had lived through years of retirement, while Stuart had established another phase of his practice in New England. [1]
The change in place and time is fundamental to the likeness. Miles describes the finished John Adams as essentially the man of 1815, rather than the president of 1800. His face records the renewed encounter with an older sitter. The initial painted sketch belongs beneath or within the later work; it is not an independently visible second portrait beside the finished one. [13]
The physical support helps connect the painting with its earlier beginning. The National Gallery’s 1995 catalogue discusses similarities between the Adams canvases and Stuart’s portraits of Robert and Henrietta Liston, made in Philadelphia in 1800. Fabric, preparation and stretchers join the family correspondence as evidence for the pictures’ history. The account supports continuity of the objects across the delay, rather than an entirely new pair first painted in 1815. [14]
These two dates consequently answer different questions. Around 1800 explains the origin of the commission and its place in Stuart’s Philadelphia practice. The return to work in 1815 explains much of the face and handling now encountered by the viewer. The picture holds both histories, even though they cannot be separated into a simple map of early and late passages just by looking at a reproduction.

The 1800 commission and the family’s attempts to obtain it
The firm early payment belongs to Abigail’s portrait. Stuart signed a receipt for one hundred dollars on 20 May 1800, establishing that her picture was already under way. John’s companion likeness was also begun during this Philadelphia period. The receipt should not be turned into evidence that his portrait had been completed or delivered by that date. [15]
Family members subsequently described John’s painting as intended for the Massachusetts State House. Miles’s 2004 account distinguishes those statements from documentary confirmation of a specific legislative commission, which had not been found. An earlier 1995 account stated the legislative request more confidently. The later qualification is useful: the family’s understanding of the intended destination is evidence, while a securely documented order from the legislature remains another question. [16]
In May 1801 Thomas Boylston Adams intervened when his mother’s portrait was threatened by a sale connected with Stuart’s debts. According to the letter quoted by Miles, he found that Abigail’s painting had been seized but his father’s had not. His assurance that her portrait was already paid for secured its release from the sheriff’s claim, although he left it with Stuart. The episode concerned the safety of a particular object as well as the painter’s failure to finish it. [17]
Further approaches followed. In December 1804 John Quincy Adams asked his mother for the receipt, hoping that proof of ownership might help him obtain the picture. In 1811 he again pressed his brother to recover the portraits and offered to pay Stuart’s price for a finished likeness of their father. The correspondence combines anger with continued confidence in the images’ quality. The family wanted these paintings enough to keep pursuing them. [18]
Their frustration should remain part of the account of Stuart’s career . Admiration for his ability did not remove the costs of delay for his clients. The Adams letters describe people trying to secure possessions they valued, rather than simply supplying picturesque anecdotes about an eccentric artist.
Adams sitting again in 1815
The eventual completion required a new encounter with John Adams. Writing to John Quincy on 8 June 1815, Abigail reported that his father had gone to sit for Stuart in response to a request made through the family. She expected a good likeness and thought her son would value it more than a portrait made “in youth or middle Age.” The letter makes the older sitter’s appearance a positive reason to complete the commission. [19]
The wording matters because the family was seeking more than a standard image of a former president. For a son who knew his father, likeness could preserve the person as he had become. An older face carried the history of continued life, rather than merely representing a diminished version of an earlier public figure.
Abigail’s same letter reports Stuart’s promise to finish her earlier portrait, which she now felt no longer resembled her. Her recollection of it being taken twenty years before is approximate; it does not supersede the documented 1800 payment. The transcription is published in Founders Early Access, with its warning that the text precedes final editing. Its portrait paragraph supplies direct contemporary evidence of the renewed sitting and the family’s response. [19]
Another letter, to Abigail Adams Shaw on 6 June, is quoted in Miles’s account. In it Abigail describes accompanying her husband for three days. This adds a glimpse of the family’s involvement, without establishing every sitting or stroke of the finished painting. Those details reach us through the catalogue’s transcription, rather than independent inspection of the original letter. [20]
The payment history also involves more than one version. Miles discusses a June 1815 receipt and a December invoice for portraits of John, associating one payment with the companion canvas and the other with a version owned by William Smith Shaw. The records should not be compressed into a story of two charges for the same object. Completion produced a family likeness that could also become the basis for further portraits. [20]
The visible face, chair and quickly worked paint
The portrait concentrates attention on Adams’s head. Pale hair surrounds a warm face, while the dark collar rises close to the jaw. His body turns at an angle, but his eyes meet the viewer. There is little setting to distract from that encounter: the brown background varies in tone, and only a small part of the chair appears beside the arm.
White fabric draws the eye down from the face. At the throat, strokes of light and grey suggest folds and ruffles; another bright passage marks the cuff above the hand. These accents give the dark figure structure without requiring every part of the coat to be described equally. The painting moves between a strongly legible head and more loosely indicated clothing.
Miles’s 1995 account associates the later completion with Stuart’s increasingly free handling, particularly in coat, shirt and neckcloth. She notes small blue accents in the eyes and thicker paint on the forehead. Such observations help explain the portrait’s liveliness: patches and strokes work together to suggest a face, while remaining visible as marks made by the painter. [21]
The same publication’s technical notes describe a medium-weight fabric with a twill weave, a relatively thin off-white ground and paint applied in varying thicknesses. The flesh was built through blocks of colour, with transparent passages in the shadows. This is evidence from the published examination of this canvas, rather than a general recipe that can be transferred to every Stuart portrait. Its condition observations belong to that historical report. [22]
The distinction between swift handling and unfinished work is especially important here. Stuart kept the picture incomplete for years, but freely worked passages in the delivered portrait need not be remnants of neglect. They also belong to his mature style and technique . The white ruffles and dark coat create convincing form through selective definition, allowing the face to retain its immediate visual force. [21]

Watch on YouTubeJohn and Abigail as different kinds of pendant
The portrait of Abigail Adams is the natural companion to John’s. Their figures turn in complementary directions, and both sit against quiet brown backgrounds. John’s black coat and pale neckcloth answer Abigail’s warmer dress, white cap and transparent embroidered shawl. The pictures share a scale and family history while differing in colour, clothing and the amount of chair visible around the figures.
They also preserve different relationships to time. Miles identifies John’s finished face principally with 1815, while Abigail’s remains the earlier likeness, completed with a later cap and shawl. A single completion date therefore does not mean that both faces show the same moment in the couple’s lives. Their relationship is more complicated than two synchronized records of appearance. [23]
Abigail recognized that difference herself. In the June letter she doubted that her grandchildren would know the earlier face, although she still saw a resemblance between it and John Quincy. Her response introduces another measure of likeness: an image could be recognizable across family resemblance while failing to match the sitter’s present appearance. The painting preserved a version of her that younger relatives might not remember. [19]
The physical evidence gives the pair another bond. In the 1995 catalogue, Miles explains how fabric and stretcher comparisons support an origin around 1800. She also distinguishes the Gallery’s canvases from works previously proposed as their original studies. Her discussion of X-radiographs concerns differences in paint handling between those objects; it does not identify a separate visible early portrait beneath each face. [14]
Looking between the two pictures makes the delay tangible. One face was substantially reconsidered; the other carried an earlier likeness into a later costume. The pendants preserve a marriage through objects whose histories developed together, even though their representations of the sitters did not advance in exactly the same way.

Later copies and the presidential series
The completed likeness became a model for other images of Adams. Miles discusses copies associated with Stuart’s nephew Gilbert Stuart Newton and with Bass Otis, as well as engravings and lithographs. Their existence extends the portrait’s history beyond the family’s possession of its original canvas. Repetition allowed a privately valued likeness to acquire a wider audience. [24]
Publisher Joseph Delaplaine sought a portrait for his illustrated biographical project in 1816. In the response quoted by Miles, Adams emphasized that the Stuart portrait belonged to John Quincy and that he could not dispose of it as his own property. He also considered the painter’s consent relevant to engraving. The episode shows that access to a likeness depended on ownership and permission, even when the face belonged to a nationally known figure. [25]
Stuart later adapted the image for series of the first five presidents. In September 1821 John Quincy recorded a further sitting connected with the version for Boston framer and printseller John Doggett. That later encounter belongs to a separate commission. It should not be folded back into the completion date of the canvas paired with Abigail. [26]
The Doggett painting was destroyed in the 1851 fire at the Library of Congress. A different version, painted for George Gibbs Jr., survives in the National Gallery’s Gibbs–Coolidge presidential series. That work is an oil on wood, accession 1979.4.1, dated circa 1821. The support and accession number distinguish it from the earlier oil on canvas, 1954.7.1. Similarity of composition does not make the two objects interchangeable. [26]
Stuart’s Washington portraits offer a broader context for this movement between individual likeness and repeated presidential image. In Adams’s case, the family’s long effort to obtain one portrait preceded its further circulation. The familiar public image developed from a commission that had carried unusually personal stakes.
Family memory and the portrait’s collection history
The letters explain those stakes with particular clarity. In 1801 Abigail hoped that their children would still look at the portraits “when the originals are no more seen.” Quoted through Miles’s account, the phrase gives family remembrance priority over public ceremony. A portrait could preserve the appearance of parents for people who would outlive them. [27]
Quincy provides a setting for that family history. The National Park Service identifies the Old House at Peacefield as the home of four generations of Adamses from 1788 to 1927. Kenneth C. Zirkel’s photograph of June 2014 shows its exterior and garden, with the house extending behind a path and flowerbeds. The modern view supplies a sense of place; the building and grounds also reflect changes made by later generations. It does not show the room in which Stuart painted Adams. [28] [29]
The painting itself passed through John Quincy’s family. The National Gallery records its descent to Charles Francis Adams, then Brooks Adams, and then Brooks’s niece Abigail Adams Homans, Mrs Robert Homans. Her gift brought it into the Gallery in 1954. The companion Abigail portrait followed the same recorded provenance, keeping the two works connected through their museum history. [3] [30]
The shift from family possession to public collection adds another audience to the likeness. Viewers can now study both Stuart’s handling and the face of a former president, while the correspondence preserves the concerns of the people who first wanted the pictures. The double date remains a useful guide to that experience: an early commission became a late likeness, and an overdue painting became a lasting object of family remembrance.
