Catherine Brass Yates (Mrs. Richard Yates): Introduction

A thread stretches between two hands, one raised with a needle and the other holding fabric in the sitter’s lap. Above this delicate action, Catherine Brass Yates turns her face towards the viewer. Gilbert Stuart gives both the sewing and the encounter unusual precision: the hands seem occupied, while the eyes acknowledge someone beyond the canvas. Painted in New York in 1793/1794, the portrait brings a merchant’s wife into view through dress, gesture and an arresting economy of paint. [1] [2]

The familiar title Mrs. Richard Yates identifies Catherine through her husband, whose companion portrait survives in the same museum. Her own painting, however, has a distinct visual authority. Sewing supplies its action, pale fabrics give it much of its light, and the carefully placed face prevents the elaborate costume from taking over. Together, these elements explain why a modestly sized portrait has attracted such sustained attention.

A sitter absorbed in sewing

Catherine sits at an angle, with her body directed towards the left of the image and her head turned towards us. Her tall cap increases the height of the figure, while the pale scarf spreads across her shoulders and chest. The background offers little distraction. Its quieter brown and olive tones allow the face, white costume and moving hands to hold attention.

The sewing makes the lower half of the composition unusually active. The raised hand holds the needle between finger and thumb; another extended finger keeps the thread apart. The lower hand secures the fabric, with a gold wedding band catching light near the bottom of the image. Neither hand is reduced to a general sign for work. Their different tasks establish a connection that the eye can follow across the space between them. [2]

Carrie Rebora Barratt’s catalogue discussion follows a larger circuit, linking the sitter’s pointed nose, needle, thread, fingers, cloth and bent arm. That reading draws attention to the way an apparently small domestic action organizes the entire portrait. The thread is especially effective: a fine pale line crosses relatively empty background, making the relationship between the hands clear without filling that space with another object. [13]

The head gives a different rhythm to this activity. The eyebrows rise slightly, and the eyes meet the viewer rather than looking down at the sewing. Her expression has often been described as assessing. The impression comes from a painted arrangement of features and gaze; it leaves room for the viewer’s response instead of establishing a complete account of Catherine’s private temperament. [2]

Stuart thus joins two moments that might ordinarily pull apart. The hands continue to make sense as working hands, yet the face offers the sustained engagement expected of a portrait. The activity helps individualize the sitter without making her appear unaware of being seen.

The New York commission

The Yates family belonged to the mercantile world in which Stuart built his New York practice. Richard Yates imported goods from Britain and the West Indies. Family connections helped bring the artist to his sitters: Barratt traces the introduction through George Pollock, a son-in-law of the Yateses and a connection of Stuart’s Dublin patron William Hartigan. The commission grew within a network extending across households and the Atlantic. [14]

That network matters because it broadens the setting beyond an isolated encounter between painter and wife. Stuart painted several members of the connected families. Portraits could reinforce relationships already maintained through marriage, business and neighbouring homes. His biography places this period within a career built successively in Britain, Ireland and the United States. The New York paintings made skills developed abroad visible to a new group of patrons. [14]

Richard’s companion portrait makes the commission’s paired character particularly useful to see. He sits beside papers and writing equipment, wearing a deep blue coat with bright buttons. Catherine’s pale clothing produces a strikingly different surface, but both sitters turn from a task towards the viewer. The paintings connect commercial affairs and domestic handwork while giving each person a distinct pose and setting. Richard’s canvas is catalogued as 1793/1794, NGA 1942.8.29. [14] [3]

Barratt emphasizes the contrast between his slightly disordered working appearance and her carefully arranged costume. It is a comparison between two constructed portraits, each selecting what to display. His papers need not be a literal record of the business transacted during a sitting, any more than her sewing proves that she refused to interrupt a household duty. The activities are part of their presentation. [13]

Looking at the pair also changes the scale of the achievement. Catherine’s painting can command attention on its own, but its formal elegance belonged within a family group. Its distinction emerges through choices made inside that commission: the long sleeve, the high cap, the exact gestures and the expressive interval between face and hands.

Bonnet, satin and the handling of white

White is the portrait’s dominant colour, but its effects are remarkably varied. The dress catches light in broad, sharp folds; the scarf over the neck is softer and more transparent. The cap combines a tall volume with small ruffled edges and a prominent bow. Stuart distinguishes these materials through changes in tone, edge and paint handling, allowing a limited range of colours to describe several kinds of fabric. [15]

The sleeve nearest the viewer offers a particularly clear example. Bright passages run along projecting folds, then turn abruptly into grey and brown shadow. Near the elbow, a small red accent brings the adjacent chair into the dress’s reflective surface. The NGA catalogue identifies these touches as reflections from the red upholstery. A colour that initially seems confined to the furniture therefore helps describe the sheen of the sitter’s clothing. [15]

At the neck, the pale scarf, or fichu, works differently. Its broad area softens the transition between dress and face, while the suggestion of fine fabric permits underlying shadows to remain active. The cap’s gauzy edges frame the forehead and cheeks with smaller broken shapes. The bright bow stands out against the shaded upper portion, bringing the handling of fabric close to the expressive centre of the portrait.

These contrasts also communicate social presentation. The NGA catalogue places the mobcap among forms of fashionable at-home dress and notes the wedding band as Catherine’s only jewellery. Simplicity of ornament does not mean simplicity of costume. The fitted sleeves, reflective silk and elaborate headwear make refinement visible through materials and arrangement rather than a profusion of accessories. [15]

The skin establishes another distinction within this pale ensemble. Warm colour in the cheeks and fingers keeps the person separate from the surrounding whites and greys. Readers exploring Stuart’s style and technique can follow the same question across other portraits: how do a few changes in paint make flesh, cloth and background feel materially different? Here, the answer is concentrated within a single figure, with almost every surface contributing to the encounter.

Domestic work and public portraiture

Sewing has encouraged viewers to treat Catherine as an emblem of industry. That interpretation has a visible foundation: her hands are occupied, and the activity demands dexterity. The greater difficulty comes when a meaningful action is made to stand for an entire national character. A portrait can present work as an admired quality without proving that its motif belongs uniquely to one country. [16]

The NGA catalogue places Catherine beside English precedents by Joshua Reynolds and John Singleton Copley, as well as Stuart’s own Irish needlework subjects. These comparisons show that handwork already had a place in fashionable portraiture. They also distinguish kinds of activity: the decorative knotting associated with one Reynolds portrait is not interchangeable with every kind of sewing. The shared interest lies in the expressive and graceful possibilities of occupied hands. [16]

Barratt develops this transatlantic argument further, describing Stuart as “offering high-style British paintings to a cosmopolitan clientele.” In that account, the New York commission demonstrates his command of techniques learned abroad and his understanding of ambitious patrons. The portrait’s American setting remains important, but its elegance belongs to a wider exchange of styles, goods and expectations. [17]

This view helps explain why the painting can feel both candid and calculated. The needlework appears specific and convincing, while the hands are arranged with exceptional care. The costume looks tangible, while its folds create a compelling pattern of light. Directness is one of the portrait’s effects, achieved through choices about pose, colour and finish. It need not mean the absence of artifice.

The Jáudenes portraits offer another route into Stuart’s presentation of status and paired sitters. Across his paintings , activities, clothing and objects help establish different public identities. Catherine’s sewing has particular force because it supplies action with so few accessories. The plain background leaves the viewer close to the person, her materials and the continuous thread linking her hands.

What technical study reveals

The NGA’s 1995 technical account describes a medium-weight, plain-weave fabric, similar to the supports used for Stuart’s portraits of Richard and Lawrence Reid Yates. The ground beneath Catherine’s painted image is thin and grey, varying in thickness and tone. In places it contributes to the shadows of the flesh and becomes a middle tone within the drapery. Preparation and finished image are therefore closely connected. [18]

This matters when looking at the apparent abundance of white. The effect does not require a solid, equally thick covering across every pale passage. A darker preparation can remain useful within the modelling, while more substantial light accents describe projecting forms. The technical account records a range from fluid impasto , where paint has perceptible body, to thin, relatively dry outlines. The material variety helps explain the visual variety. [18]

The hands also preserve evidence of adjustment. Small pentimenti , or traces of changed arrangements, were identified in some fingertips of both hands and in nearby drapery. Such revisions are especially meaningful in a composition whose effect depends on the relationship between fingers, cloth and thread. The convincing gesture was worked out through painting, rather than simply recorded once without alteration. [18]

Condition has its own chronology. The same 1995 report describes repaired background tears, areas of wear and discoloured varnish. Barratt’s 2004 account discusses the portraits after a more recent surface cleaning, when the relationship between glossy and brushed effects could be appreciated afresh. The older varnish description belongs to the painting at the time of that examination; it does not describe its present appearance. [19]

These observations make the painting’s economy more concrete. Differences in thickness, exposed tonal preparation and small changes in placement contribute to the final image. They also keep visual interpretation connected to the actual object. The portrait’s precision comes from selective handling: a narrow line can carry a thread, a bright stroke can establish a fold, and a restrained change of tone can turn a face.

Provenance, copies and reputation

The painting passed through the sitter’s family before entering the collections of Isaac Monroe Cline and Thomas B. Clarke. It was included in the Clarke collection purchase made through Knoedler for the Mellon trust in 1936, and the NGA records its gift in 1940. The museum’s provenance preserves qualifications within the earlier family chain rather than presenting every transfer as equally certain. [7]

Its growing reputation belongs partly to a much later period. The 1995 catalogue identifies the 1922 Union League Club exhibition as its first public showing and recounts the praise that followed. Royal Cortissoz compared it with Velázquez; John Hill Morgan later admired its “harmony in grays,” drawing a parallel with Whistler. These comparisons describe the vocabulary of twentieth-century appreciation, bringing much later artistic reference points to a portrait painted in the 1790s. [20]

That response helps explain why Catherine’s image has often stood apart from its original family group. Critics could admire the restrained colour and confident handling as qualities with a history beyond one sitter. Yet the domestic action, fabric and face remain specific. The picture’s later status as a masterpiece grew from those particulars rather than replacing them with a general example of accomplished painting.

Copies add a different kind of afterlife. The NGA catalogue discusses an early copy by an unidentified artist, and Barratt’s notes distinguish works formerly regarded as replicas from copies after Stuart. The distinction concerns authorship: repetition of the composition does not, by itself, establish that Stuart painted the repeated version. The Washington canvas has its own identity, accession and documented technical history. [21]

Returning to the original image brings these histories back to a small set of visible relationships. The bright cap rises above the face; the satin sleeve turns beside the red chair; the thread crosses open space. Catherine appears both engaged in an activity and available to our attention. Stuart sustains that balance through the entire portrait, making the smallest implement and the broadest fold equally useful to its character.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who was Catherine Brass Yates?

She was the wife of New York merchant Richard Yates. Stuart painted both members of the couple during his New York period. [14]

When was the portrait painted?

The National Gallery of Art dates it 1793/1794. It is oil on canvas, measuring 76.2 × 63.5 cm without its frame. [1]

What is she doing?

She holds fabric in one hand and a threaded needle in the other. The tension of the thread connects the hands and helps organize the composition. [2] [13]

Is sewing a uniquely American symbol here?

The portrait has been read as an image of industry, but English and Irish portrait precedents complicate an exclusively national interpretation. [16] [17]

Did Stuart revise the hands?

The 1995 technical account records small changes in the position of some fingertips on both hands and in nearby drapery. [18]
