Dolley Madison by Gilbert Stuart: Introduction

Dolley Madison faces the viewer in a white dress, framed by a dark curtain and the red upholstery of her chair. Her hands rest together near the lower edge; a slight smile gives the formal pose an approachable character. Gilbert Stuart painted her in Washington in 1804, when her husband James was secretary of state. The portrait belongs to the years before she became first lady. [1]

Now part of the White House Collection, the canvas began as one of a married couple’s matching portraits. Its fashionable clothes, coordinated setting and later passage through family and institutional collections connect a personal commission with the history of American public life.

Dolley in 1804

The sitter had already experienced marriage, bereavement and a move into national political society. Born Dolley Payne, she had lived in Philadelphia with her Quaker family. Her first husband, John Todd Jr., and their younger son died during the yellow fever epidemic of 1793. She married James Madison in September 1794. When he became Thomas Jefferson’s secretary of state in 1801, the couple moved to Washington. [14]

That chronology matters to the portrait. Stuart encountered Dolley as an established participant in the capital’s social world, but before James’s presidency gave her the role through which she is now most widely remembered. Her occasional service as hostess for the widowed Jefferson belongs to this earlier period. The picture records a woman already close to the administration, rather than someone encountering public society for the first time. [1]

Stuart’s Washington practice brought him into the same circles. His patrons included government figures and their families, diplomats and other well-connected residents. The Madisons’ commission joined a group of paired portraits made during his stay, including those of William and Anna Maria Thornton and the Spanish minister and his American wife, Sally McKean Yrujo. These connections place Dolley’s sitting within a recognisable community of patrons. [15]

The portraits were finished by 20 May 1804, when Dolley reported their completion to her sister Anna Payne Cutts. As reproduced in Ellen G. Miles’s catalogue entry, the letter praised James’s likeness. It provides contemporary evidence for the completed pair without telling us everything Dolley thought about her own appearance. [16]

1

The turned face

Dark curls frame the light forehead and warm face. The head turns slightly across the body while the eyes engage the space before the portrait.

Necklaces and the shaped neckline

Fine gold-coloured chains descend towards the curved neckline and its small central ornament. The pale trim follows a different rhythm from the gathered dress below.

The sleeve and waist

A narrow decorated band gathers the sleeve above the arm. Light and grey folds meet the darker edge of the chair and the warm fabric around the body.

The folded hands

The hands lie low across the foreground, with a small ring and light sleeve edge. Their long horizontal arrangement steadies the larger curves of dress and chair.

A light dress against a rich setting

The dress supplies the largest light area in the painting. Its high waist establishes a line just below the bust, while folds descend towards the hands. The neckline is low and broad, edged with delicate white trimming and narrow gold bands. Stuart makes these changes in fabric and ornament legible without giving them the same emphasis as the sitter’s face. Miles identifies the costume with the fashionable French styles then being adopted in America. [17]

The sleeves appear translucent around the upper arms. Small pale marks describe their edges and decoration, allowing warmer tones to show through the fabric. Across the bodice, cooler shadows give the white cloth volume. Looking from the sleeve to the central folds reveals how much variety Stuart obtains within a costume that first reads as a single bright shape. The soft changes in tone help distinguish light fabric from the denser surfaces of the chair and curtain. [18]

Gold appears again in the necklace and in the fabric gathered around the arms. The three strands of the necklace trace different curves across the neck and upper chest. Below, the golden shawl spreads towards both sides of the chair. Its patterned edges connect the pale dress with the darker red and gold furnishings. The jewellery is part of a carefully dressed appearance, without needing to be assigned an undocumented personal meaning. [17]

Her dark hair forms a strong boundary around the light face. Ringlets fall near the forehead and cheeks, while the rest is drawn back in the arrangement Miles describes as a chignon. The transition from the forehead into the curls keeps the head distinct from the broad dark background. Warm colour in the cheeks and lips then draws the eye towards the gaze and the restrained smile.

At the left, a gathered curtain opens onto a column and cloudy sky. These elements make the space more expansive than the seated figure alone would suggest. The column supplies a firm vertical, whereas the cloth rises in uneven folds. Beyond them, blue and pale warm clouds introduce a cooler interval beside the sitter. The arrangement provides a dignified portrait setting; it cannot identify the room where Dolley sat. [17]

The hands help settle the composition. They lie together low in the picture, with a ring visible on one finger. The chair’s curved arm returns the eye towards them, and the red upholstery repeats the curtain’s warmth. Face and hands remain connected across the broad light area of the dress. The result feels composed and sociable, even though the posture is carefully arranged. [18]

The marriage pendant

Dolley’s original companion portrait represents James in a black coat and white neckcloth, seated in a matching red and gold chair. Stuart coordinated their turns so that the figures face slightly towards one another while both look out at the viewer. The relationship crosses the gap between the canvases: each likeness remains independent, but the two acquire a further meaning when seen together. [15]

The shared colours help establish that connection. Red fabric and gilded furniture recur around differently dressed bodies. Dolley’s white dress has a much larger presence than James’s white shirt and cravat, yet the bright linen near his head answers her lighter costume. Paired portraiture could accommodate these differences while making a marriage visible through related scale, pose and furnishings. [17]

The smaller James now belongs to Colonial Williamsburg, accession 1945-23,A. Its owning record dates it to 1804 and identifies an oil on canvas measuring 74.9 × 62.4 centimetres. This is the physical painting that must be matched to Dolley’s commission. Its identity matters because Stuart later developed Madison’s likeness for other patrons and formats. [3]

At roughly the same height, the original canvases give the two sitters comparable space. A visitor could look between their faces without one portrait dominating through size. Their coordinated format made the relationship between husband and wife part of the display.

The larger James Madison portrait at Bowdoin has a different companion: Thomas Jefferson. Commissioned by James Bowdoin III in 1805, it reuses the earlier likeness within an expanded composition. Placing that large Madison beside Dolley without explanation would join paintings from separate commissions. The difference shows how an established face could be adapted from a family pair to a public, diplomatic setting. [19]

The Washington years and hosting

Dolley’s reputation for sociability gives a useful context for Stuart’s direct gaze and slight smile. Miles describes her participation in a network that included officials, diplomats, investors and prominent local families. The portrait offers an image suited to that world: sufficiently formal to acknowledge her position, with an expression that allows a sense of personal encounter. The expression is Stuart’s presentation of the sitter, rather than independent proof of every quality later attributed to her. [14]

The studio itself was part of this network. Anna Maria Thornton visited with the Madisons in June 1804 and began trying to copy their portraits in July. Her diary, as cited by Miles, places the pictures within exchanges between friends, patrons and an interested amateur artist. A finished likeness could become something to visit, discuss and study as well as a possession commissioned for the home. [20]

These visits also make the portrait’s social setting more concrete. The same people met one another outside the studio and sat for closely related compositions within it. Repeated poses therefore connected distinct households across Washington. Similarities between the women’s dresses and settings belong to this pattern of fashionable portraiture, while differences of face and expression sustained the individual likeness. [15]

Dolley later compared Stuart’s likeness with another artist’s. In a letter to Margaret Bayard Smith in January 1835, quoted by Miles, she described an engraving after Stuart as “a better likeness than Mr Wood’s”. Her judgement concerned a reproductive print and a comparison with Joseph Wood’s portrait. It suggests continuing recognition of Stuart’s image decades after the sitting, while leaving room for dissatisfaction with how the engraving had been executed. [21]

This later response is especially valuable because the familiar White House associations can otherwise overwhelm the painting’s earlier history. Dolley knew the likeness as something made within her own lifetime and circulated in another medium. Its subsequent historical importance grew around a portrait she could already compare, remember and judge.

The disputed 1814 location

The burning of the President’s House in 1814 is central to Dolley’s later reputation, but the history of her own canvas requires care. In a 1998 White House Historical Association article, Betty C. Monkman states that the portrait escaped the fire because it was at Montpelier, the Madisons’ Virginia home. The 2004 Stuart catalogue gives a different account, placing their large portraits in the President’s House and describing their removal before the British entered. [22] [23]

The catalogue’s account draws on an 1828 letter by Dolley recalling portraits and engravings in the building. That testimony is significant, but the disagreement between the published histories prevents a confident statement that this particular canvas was carried from the White House in 1814. The painting’s survival is certain; the circumstances of its location at that moment remain disputed in these accounts. [23]

A separate history belongs to the full-length Washington portrait whose removal Dolley insisted upon. That White House canvas is a version of the Lansdowne composition , distinct from the original now in the National Portrait Gallery. The rescue of a Washington likeness should not be transferred automatically to the portrait of Dolley. Keeping the two works separate preserves the difference between her role in an event and the movements of her own painting. [22]

Inheritance, auction and the White House collection

The later ownership is more securely traced. The White House curator records the marital portraits at Montpelier and subsequently at Dolley’s Washington home on Lafayette Park. After her death in 1849 they passed to her son, Payne Todd. At the Washington auction of March 1851, her niece Anna Payne Causten and her husband bought Dolley’s portrait. It later descended to their daughter, Mary Causten Kunkel. [13]

A Philadelphia sale on 9 May 1899 brought the canvas into the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. The Academy lent it to the White House in 1970; acquisition for the White House Collection followed in 1994. Its credit honours Phyllis J. Shorenstein through the gift of the Walter H. and Phyllis J. Shorenstein Foundation. [2]

The modern photograph accompanying this history shows the White House and lawn in 2008. It locates the institution associated with the portrait’s later ownership, rather than reconstructing the rooms or surroundings of the 1804 sitting. The picture of Dolley contains its own arranged architecture; the photograph belongs to a much later chapter in the canvas’s history. [24]

Across those changes, the portrait retains the coordinated pose and fashionable appearance devised for the original pair. Its place in American art rests both on that achievement as a likeness and on the later meanings attached to its sitter. Looking closely at the dress, hands and gaze brings the individual painting back into view alongside the public history that made Dolley famous.

Frequently Asked Questions

Was Dolley first lady when Stuart painted her?

No. Stuart painted this portrait in 1804, when James Madison was Jefferson’s secretary of state. Dolley already participated in Washington society and sometimes acted as hostess for Jefferson. [1]

Which James Madison portrait was its companion?

The 1804 canvas now at Colonial Williamsburg, 1945-23,A. The larger Madison at Bowdoin belongs to a later commission paired with Jefferson. [3] [19]

Was this painting rescued from the White House in 1814?

Published histories disagree about its location. Monkman’s 1998 article places it at Montpelier, while the 2004 Stuart catalogue describes the marital portraits being removed from the President’s House. Its rescue there should therefore remain qualified. The Washington portrait saved at Dolley’s insistence is a separate work. [22] [23]

When did it enter the White House Collection?

It was acquired in 1994, following a loan from the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts begun in 1970. The owning curator lists it as 994.1737.1. [2]

Discussion

Look again at the images and ideas explored in Dolley Madison by Gilbert Stuart. These editorial prompts invite your observations.

Follow the light areas from Dolley’s face through the neckline and sleeves to her hands. How do the red and gold furnishings hold those passages together? Consider how the picture’s meaning changes when it is seen beside its original marital companion or within a collection devoted to the presidency.
