James Madison by Gilbert Stuart: Introduction

James Madison sits beside a red-covered table, his dark coat set against a column, curtain and quiet wall. One hand rests near the table’s edge while the other hangs beside the chair. Gilbert Stuart painted this substantial portrait for James Bowdoin III around 1805–07, when Madison was Thomas Jefferson’s secretary of state. Its intended companion was Jefferson, rather than Madison’s wife Dolley. [1]

That distinction separates this Bowdoin canvas from Stuart’s earlier marital portraits and his later presidential series. A familiar face could serve different purposes as the painter adapted a likeness to new formats, patrons and settings.

A secretary of state, before the presidency

Madison is often encountered as the fourth president of the United States, but this commission belongs to his earlier service under Jefferson. Stuart painted the Bowdoin portrait before Madison’s election in 1808 and the beginning of his presidency in 1809. Reading it as a portrait of an already serving president would obscure the reason it was paired with Jefferson’s. [14]

The two offices formed a meaningful relationship for the commissioner. Jefferson headed the administration; Madison directed its foreign affairs as secretary of state. Bowdoin had been appointed American minister to Spain and wanted their likenesses for his intended residence in Madrid. The pairing gave the administration he represented a visible presence in the setting where he expected to carry out diplomatic work. [1]

Madison’s established reputation also lay behind his appearance as a public figure. Ellen G. Miles’s account recalls his role in framing the Constitution and his collaboration with Alexander Hamilton and John Jay on the Federalist essays. These achievements help explain the authority attached to the sitter’s name, without requiring every book in the portrait to be identified as a particular constitutional text. [14]

Stuart supplied an image appropriate to that standing through restrained clothing and a formal setting. Black cloth and white linen give the figure a sober appearance, while the furnishings make the scale and occasion substantial. The composition presents a statesman through the combination of an individual face and the circumstances arranged around him.

Bowdoin’s intended diplomatic setting

Bowdoin asked Henry Dearborn to arrange the commission in March 1805. He preferred Stuart and requested matching half-length portraits of Madison and Jefferson. His instructions also addressed transport and framing: the pictures could be sent to a Spanish port, while frames could be obtained in Europe. These practical details show that the pair was designed for display abroad. [15]

Matching did not mean duplicating every part of the composition. The large format allowed each seated figure to be accompanied by a table, books and architectural background. Their positions were coordinated across two canvases, making the relationship between the men legible when the pictures were placed together. A viewer could understand the two officeholders as connected while recognizing separate likenesses.

Bowdoin’s proposed Madrid residence remained an intention. His diplomatic mission was unsuccessful, and he resigned in 1807 without serving as minister in Spain. In October that year he directed that the pictures be kept for his own house; they were subsequently displayed in Boston. Their actual early setting therefore differed from the destination anticipated in the commission. [16]

The change helps distinguish a portrait’s design from its later use. Stuart could complete a picture suited to an international diplomatic interior even though events prevented that particular display. The pose and format still record the commission’s ambition after the canvas entered another environment.

The earlier likeness and Boston finish

Stuart did not begin Madison’s face without an existing model. He had painted James and Dolley Madison from life in Washington in 1804, and used that earlier likeness of James for the Bowdoin commission. The head’s position, hair and collar connect the later portrait with the earlier one, even as the body and surroundings were adapted. [17]

The earlier painting survives at Colonial Williamsburg, accession 1945-23,A. Its owning record identifies it as an oil on canvas of 1804, measuring 74.9 × 62.4 centimetres, given by Mrs. George S. Robbins. It is considerably smaller than the Bowdoin picture and belongs to a different commission. Recognizing its identity prevents the two Madisons from being treated as alternative photographs of one canvas. [18]

Dolley’s letter of 20 May 1804, quoted by Miles, described Stuart’s likeness of her husband as “an admirable picture” and reported both marital portraits finished. That contemporary response belongs to the earlier pair. It does not establish that the large picture ordered by Bowdoin the following year already existed. [19]

By late June 1805 Dearborn reported the new Bowdoin portraits nearly complete, with Stuart intending to take them to Boston. Correspondence in 1807 documents the later arrangements for them. The history consequently distinguishes a face studied in 1804 from a larger composition developed and completed afterwards. It also separates Madison’s dependence on an earlier likeness from Jefferson’s renewed sittings in 1805. [20]

The resulting picture demonstrates a practical part of Stuart’s portrait practice: a successful likeness could remain useful after the original commission was finished. Reuse involved decisions about scale, pose and setting, allowing an established head to carry a new public purpose.

Chair, hand and the formal room

Madison’s near-frontal body gives the composition a stable centre. His head turns slightly, and the gaze leads towards the space occupied by Jefferson in the intended arrangement. The high white collar and loosely folded neckcloth interrupt the broad dark shape of the coat. Bright fabric close to the face makes the head distinct without introducing elaborate decoration across the whole figure.

The hands establish a less symmetrical arrangement. One rests near the table; the other extends down beside the chair, its fingers clearly separated against the surrounding darkness. Their differing positions give the seated body breadth and ease. Neither needs to be assigned a hidden message or identified as a gesture towards a particular event.

Red fabric spreads across the table in the foreground and gathers in the curtain above. Between these larger passages, the black coat remains visually concentrated. The column supplies a vertical boundary, while the wall behind the head stays relatively quiet. A few books at the table’s edge connect the setting with study and official work. This combination agrees with Miles’s description of the expanded composition. [21]

The chair is important chiefly through its relationship to the arm and body. A visible red back and bright accents help locate Madison in a furnished space, while the dark coat obscures much of its form. Stuart makes selected features legible rather than describing every piece of upholstery and woodwork with equal emphasis.

The setting should not be taken as an exact room at Montpelier or the office in which Madison sat. Column, curtain, table and books belong to the arrangement of a formal portrait. They give the figure a suitably elevated environment while allowing attention to return to the head and hands. The image supplies a presentation of public identity, rather than a documented architectural view.

Madison beside Jefferson

The paired Thomas Jefferson portrait clarifies how that identity works. Madison turns towards Jefferson’s side of the arrangement; Jefferson addresses the viewer more directly. Both occupy substantial interiors with red-covered tables, books and classical architecture. The coordination gives their different offices a shared visual language. [22]

Their dark suits are comparatively restrained within those grand surroundings. Bowdoin’s 2020 labels describe a presentation based on dignity and concentrated thought, setting aside the outward signs of monarchy. Books and a serious manner could distinguish a republican official without requiring a crown or sceptre. These are claims made through representation, rather than a complete description of political reality. [3]

V. Scott Dimond’s 2008 exhibition essay connects the portraits with Bowdoin’s educational ambitions for his collection. In that reading, books and papers offer possible associations with law and the preparation of citizens for public life. The interpretation helps explain why the pair could matter in a college as well as a diplomatic residence. It does not establish the identity of each painted volume. [23]

The museum’s later interpretation also addresses the limits of the ideals attached to the sitters. Its 2021 Madison label places his contributions to constitutional government beside his enslavement of people at Montpelier. That context belongs alongside the image of thoughtful leadership, because the liberty associated with the republic did not extend equally to the people whose work sustained the sitter’s life. [24]

Looking between the paintings therefore involves more than comparing two faces. The pair makes an administration coherent through pose, clothing and setting. Later interpretation asks what that representation includes and what it leaves outside the frame. The classical surroundings and sober dress can be appreciated as effective portrait devices while their political implications remain open to scrutiny.

Other Madison portraits and the bequest

The portrait of Dolley Madison belongs to the earlier marital commission. Now in the White House Collection, it was painted in 1804 to accompany the smaller James Madison at Colonial Williamsburg. Its appearance here offers a comparison between two different uses of paired portraiture. It should not be hung beside the Bowdoin Madison under the assumption that the two canvases were originally commissioned together. [25]

That distinction also keeps their later histories separate. Accounts of the Madisons’ own portraits, their movement to Montpelier and their eventual separation concern the 1804 pair. They do not explain the descent of Bowdoin’s larger canvas. The commissioner and intended companion are essential parts of identifying which Madison a source is discussing. [25]

Stuart returned to the Bowdoin likeness in 1821 after Boston framer and printseller John Doggett commissioned a series of the first five presidents. Miles records that he visited Bowdoin College to copy Madison. This was work from an existing portrait, rather than a new sitting with the former president. The Doggett version survives at the Mead Art Museum, Amherst College, accession 1945.82. [26]

A separate smaller version belongs to the Gibbs–Coolidge presidential series at the National Gallery of Art. Its published object record identifies it as an oil on wood, circa 1821, accession 1979.4.2. The support and object number distinguish it from both the large Bowdoin canvas and the earlier Colonial Williamsburg portrait. Repetition of the head did not make these paintings the same physical work. [27]

The Bowdoin portrait entered the college as a bequest in 1813, together with Jefferson’s. Its later role within a collection gives another setting to the image of the secretary of state: a commission intended to represent an administration abroad became an example through which students and other viewers could consider American portraiture . [13]

The portraits joined a collection that also contained European Old Masters and copies. Dimond relates that mixture to Bowdoin’s educational ambitions: American public figures could be represented through an inherited visual culture while students encountered a wider range of art. The college setting allowed the painting’s European conventions and American subject to become part of the same educational purpose. [23]

Stuart’s different paintings of public figures often require this attention to versions. Madison’s recognizable face passed from a marital likeness into a diplomatic pair and later presidential series. The Bowdoin picture preserves one particular stage in that sequence, when the future president was represented through the office he then held.
