Horatio Gates by Gilbert Stuart: Introduction

Horatio Gates holds a paper recalling Saratoga, with a large medal bright against his dark military coat. White hair and a carefully observed face give him the presence of an older sitter, while the uniform and decorations return attention to his public achievements. Gilbert Stuart painted the portrait around 1793–94, long after the Revolutionary victory it celebrates. Commissioned by Gates’s friend Ebenezer Stevens, it brings military remembrance into a personal likeness. [1]

The distinction between the date of the painting and the date on its document is essential. Stuart represents a veteran looking back on an earlier success, giving the objects of remembrance a prominent place beside the living man.

A veteran remembered through an earlier victory

The portrait recalls the surrender of John Burgoyne’s army after the Saratoga campaign. The National Park Service places the surrender on 17 October 1777 and identifies the modern memorial site near Schuylerville, New York. That event belongs to a much earlier moment than Stuart’s encounter with the retired soldier. The intervening years are part of the painting’s meaning: Gates’s achievement is presented as something established and remembered. [13]

A modern photograph of the memorial park by Kenneth C. Zirkel, taken in July 2022, shows cannon displays amid grass, paths and trees. It offers a present-day point of reference for the event named in the portrait. The memorial landscape is separate from Stuart’s studio setting and from the appearance of the site in 1777. [14]

Stuart does not reconstruct a battle around Gates. A dark background and a relatively close view concentrate attention on the figure. The past enters through selected things: paper, medal, uniform and weapon. Their clarity allows the portrait to carry historical information without becoming a crowded narrative scene.

Barratt describes the result as an idealized, retrospective military likeness. That does not mean the individual face disappears into a general image of heroism. The hair, colouring and contours around the eyes and chin retain the particularity of an older man. The portrait works through the relationship between that observed head and the public identity established by his dress. [1]

The commissioner also matters. Stevens was Gates’s close friend and a former military man who became a successful merchant. The likeness began within that relationship, rather than as a newly commissioned record of the battlefield. It could honour a shared understanding of service while preserving the face of someone personally known. [1]

The face above the uniform

The head turns across the dark coat, framed by light hair and a pale collar. Small red and grey passages give the face a different emphasis from the brighter uniform details.

Uniform, medal and paper

The folded document provides the clearest verbal link with Saratoga. Its title identifies the Convention of 1777, bringing an agreement into the same space as the soldier. A treaty or convention can condense the result of a campaign into something that can be held, displayed and read. Stuart places that association within an arrangement of carefully differentiated hands.

The Articles of Convention, in the transcription published by Yale’s Avalon Project, are dated 16 October 1777. Their first article allowed Burgoyne’s troops to march out with the “honours of war” before leaving their arms. The second proposed passage to Britain on condition that the troops did not serve again in North America during the conflict; the third provided an exception for exchange. These were negotiated terms, rather than a simple image of unconditional submission. [15]

The date also helps separate agreement from ceremony. The final article anticipates signatures and exchange the next morning, consistent with the surrender commemorated on 17 October. The painted paper refers to that history, without establishing that Stuart depicted a particular surviving archival manuscript. The document identifies the achievement around which Stuart organizes the sitter’s public identity. [15]

His blue and buff uniform supplies a second kind of recognition. Pale facings and cuffs stand sharply against the dark coat, while gold buttons and epaulettes create bright accents. Barratt identifies the clothing as a later version of military dress, rather than the particular uniform worn at Saratoga. Costume and document therefore carry different relationships to time. [16]

The large round medal commemorates the victory. The National Museum of American History describes Nicolas-Marie Gatteaux’s design as a bust of Gates on the obverse and a surrender scene on the reverse, with Burgoyne offering his sword and the armies behind them. The medal makes a second historical image within Stuart’s portrait. Its presence on the chest gives public recognition a visible form. [17]

The smaller eagle badge is distinct from that congressional honour. It identifies the Society of the Cincinnati, founded by Continental officers in 1783. Along with the sword and hat, the two decorations assemble several aspects of Gates’s military identity: service, commemorated victory and association with fellow officers. [16]

Stuart’s return to New York

The portrait belongs to Stuart’s first period back in America after years in Britain and Ireland. He returned in 1793 and established a practice in New York before moving to Philadelphia late in 1794. Barratt’s account places his success within overlapping networks of merchants, political figures and established families. Military veterans formed part of that wider field of sitters. [18]

Gates was one of several people whose faces could connect Stuart’s practice with the recent Revolution. Yet a military reputation alone did not produce a commission. Friends, former colleagues and patrons helped bring artist and sitter together. Barratt suggests possible introductions through John Trumbull , once Gates’s aide, or Henry Cruger. Those routes remain possibilities; Stevens’s commission is the firmer point in the picture’s history. [1]

John Jay offers another view of Stuart’s New York connections. The painter already knew Jay from London, and the renewed relationship helped him reach other sitters. Looking between Jay and Gates shows how different kinds of service could be represented within the same practice: academic robes in one case, military clothing and honours in the other. Their identities emerge through particular attributes, rather than a single formula for every prominent man. [18]

Stuart brought considerable experience to these commissions. His English training in portraiture and his work for Irish patrons gave him several approaches to pose, surface and characterization. New York offered circumstances in which he could adapt them to clients whose standing belonged to the new republic. Gates’s portrait is one especially concentrated example of that adjustment. [18]

The portrait’s controlled authority

The face has a different kind of definition from the uniform. Warm colour and softly connected passages give the cheeks and forehead fullness, while pale strands of hair emerge against the darker ground. Barratt emphasizes Stuart’s varied handling, contrasting the face with the more sharply described clothing and hands. The contrast gives the head a softer presence while maintaining the legibility of the uniform’s public signs. [19]

The distinction is particularly clear around the cuffs. Buttons, white fabric and the boundaries of the sleeves provide definite accents beside the hands. The paper makes a pale irregular shape above the hat, while the sword’s hilt introduces a harder metallic structure below. Each object has a different visual character, and the arrangement lets the viewer distinguish them without losing the unity of the figure.

Gates’s authority is consequently built from several kinds of attention. The face asks to be recognized as a likeness; the uniform and insignia ask to be understood as signs of service. Their conjunction allows a formal portrait to retain something of a personal encounter. It gives neither the spectator nor the historian direct access to the sitter’s private feelings.

The Met’s current description associates its directness with Copley, while Barratt stresses British precedents in Gainsborough and Romney. These accounts emphasize different aspects of the same combination: painterly passages in the head, clarity in the costume and a firmly organized presentation. The visible contrasts can be appreciated without turning them into proof of one exclusive line of influence. [2] [19]

Stuart’s earlier Captain John Gell provides a useful comparison. That full-length portrait places a naval officer on a dramatic shore. Gates occupies a closer format, with the main historical references concentrated on his body and in his hands. The change in arrangement shows how military identity could be sustained through different kinds of portrait composition. [20]

Revolutionary reputation after the war

Saratoga gave Gates an enduring claim to public recognition, but his career also included major reverses. Barratt recounts his disastrous defeat at Camden in 1780, as well as the victory of 1777. The portrait selects the achievement commemorated by Congress; it does not attempt to narrate the whole sequence of military success and failure. [21]

That selectivity helps explain the importance of the medal. A public honour gives the sitter’s reputation a form that can be displayed as an object. The document reinforces it with a named agreement and year. Together they establish the particular past around which the likeness is organized, leaving other episodes outside the image.

The honour also represents a commander’s place within a collective achievement. The National Museum of American History’s discussion distinguishes Gates’s overall command from the work of other officers on the battlefield. Its account of the medal shows how commemoration can focus on one person even when a campaign depended on many. The image of surrender on the medal similarly compresses a large military event into an encounter between leaders. [17]

The Society of the Cincinnati badge adds a connection formed after the fighting. Its establishment in 1783 joined officers in an association concerned with remembrance, union and mutual support. In the portrait, Gates’s identity extends beyond an isolated victory to membership in a continuing community of veterans. [16]

Stuart allows these forms of remembrance to gather around an older face. The result can honour Gates while still making visible the distance between service and retirement. That distance gives the painting a historical character quite different from a likeness made in the immediate aftermath of battle.

The surviving painting

The portrait remained associated with Stevens and his family. In 1796, according to Barratt, Gates borrowed it so that Cornelius Tiebout could make a stipple engraving. The episode shows the likeness acquiring a wider life beyond the original commission: an image held by a friend could be reproduced and shared. The account is supported in the catalogue by a letter from Gates to Stevens, rather than by the painting alone. [22]

Stevens subsequently lent the picture to the American Academy of the Fine Arts exhibition of 1817. Barratt reproduces a reviewer’s praise for its “fidelity to nature” and its historical value. The response connected likeness with patriotism, recognizing that the portrait offered both a convincing individual and a way of remembering the Revolution. The words reach us through the later catalogue’s quotation of the review. [23]

The Met records its eventual gift by Lucille S. Pfeffer in 1977. That date belongs to the painting’s museum history, distinct from its creation around 1793–94 and the events recalled from 1777. Accession number 1977.243 identifies the surviving oil independently of later prints after it. [7]

The relationships among those dates remain visible in the picture. Stuart’s sitter has aged, but the document preserves an earlier year and the medal gives victory an enduring form. The portrait joins them through the arrangement of face, clothing and hands. It preserves a friend’s likeness while presenting the achievement through which a much wider public would recognize his name.

Discussion

Look again at the images and ideas explored in Horatio Gates by Gilbert Stuart. These editorial prompts invite your observations.

Look first at Gates’s face and then at the document, medal and eagle badge. How does each carry a different relationship to the past? Compare the arrangement with Gell’s standing figure: what changes when a military portrait concentrates history in a few objects?
