Gilbert Stuart’s Self-Portrait: Introduction

A small head emerges from a pale green field, with the face more firmly defined than the collar, shoulders or hair. This is Gilbert Stuart looking at himself around 1786, in a painting only 27 centimetres high. The Metropolitan Museum of Art calls it Portrait of the Artist . Its unfinished appearance brings the act of making a likeness unusually close to the viewer: a nose, brow and turn of the cheek establish a person before the surrounding figure has fully taken shape. [1] [2]

Later family testimony connects the picture with Stuart’s wife, Charlotte, and places it around their marriage. That intimate purpose offers one way to understand its small scale and selective finish. It also invites a different encounter from the expansive public portraits through which Stuart established his London reputation.

A face within an unfinished oval

The whole object has two different boundaries. A dark outer area occupies the corners of a rectangular support, while a broad oval encloses the pale green field. Inside it, the head occupies a relatively small area. The surrounding space is generous relative to the face, and the lightly indicated clothing spreads outward without becoming a complete body. Keeping the rectangle visible preserves this relationship between image and support.

Stuart turns his head in three-quarter view. One side of the face falls into stronger shadow, while light catches the forehead, nose and cheek. Dark strokes establish the eye sockets and the hair beside the face. The mouth is compressed and comparatively quiet. Small differences in direction and tone make the head seem alert even though the rest of the figure remains loosely stated. [2]

The portrait contains no painted palette, brushes or elaborate studio setting to announce the sitter’s occupation. Its subject is identified through the likeness and the work’s history. As a result, attention stays close to the head and to the means by which it becomes recognizable. The painting shows enough to establish a presence while leaving much of the surrounding figure unresolved.

That unevenness gives looking a particular rhythm. The eye settles on the face, then discovers that some adjacent passages have far less definition. A dark accent can give hair its direction without describing individual strands. A pale shape can suggest a collar without establishing every fold. The movement between these levels of finish is central to the painting’s effect, rather than a distraction from an otherwise complete image.

1

The angled head

The eyes look outward while the head tilts across the lightly indicated shoulders. Dark and light touches describe the features without giving every surrounding passage the same degree of finish.

2

Collar and unfinished clothing

The pale collar becomes a series of broad strokes below the jaw. Farther down, the clothing loses its firm edges and merges with the greenish surrounding field.

The painted oval and rectangular support

The curved green boundary sits inside the dark corners of a rectangular painting. This edge helps distinguish the painted oval setting from the physical shape of the support.

Colour and the modelling of the head

The pale green surround makes the warmer face especially noticeable. Pink and reddish passages describe the cheek and nose, while browns organize the brow, mouth and shadowed side. The contrast is restrained enough for the head to remain embedded in the surrounding paint. It never becomes a sharply bounded silhouette pasted onto a uniform background.

Carrie Rebora Barratt’s 2004 catalogue account describes Stuart building the head with opaque paint and then developing it with transparent colour. This distinction helps explain how a small number of visible marks can carry different kinds of information. Some establish the basic planes; others modify their warmth or depth. The appearance of speed does not imply that the image contains only one undifferentiated layer. [12]

Barratt also connects this sketch with later testimony about Stuart’s working method. In John S. Cogdell’s account of an 1816 conversation, Stuart described seeking the “masses of light and shadow” with a small, blunt brush. The remark concerns his way of forming a head, rather than a witnessed account of this painting’s creation. It nevertheless gives useful language for the broad relationships visible here. [12]

The face is convincing because those relationships work together. The nose projects from the shaded eye region, the cheek turns towards the light, and the lower face narrows towards the chin. Stuart’s style and technique can be followed through more elaborate portraits, but this small image makes the relative importance of a few decisions particularly clear. The lively surface and the coherent head are parts of the same achievement.

An intimate portrait around the time of marriage

Stuart married Charlotte Coates in 1786, during his London career. The association between the self-portrait and that moment depends on a much later account by their daughter Jane. She said that her father painted a small image of himself for her mother after persuasion, but left it unfinished. This testimony underlies the approximate date used for the Met painting. [13]

An intended recipient changes how the object can be understood. A likeness made for a spouse could be valued for familiarity and affection without requiring the scale or polish of an exhibition portrait. Barratt compares its intimacy with that of a portrait miniature, an image cherished by a particular person. The comparison concerns its role and small scale; the object itself is oil on canvas. [13]

This reading leaves the viewer in an unusual position. We encounter a self-image that may have been meaningful within a marriage before it became part of a museum collection. The absence of ceremonial dress or professional equipment becomes compatible with that closeness. The head offers a personal presence through a few strongly established features.

The connection with Charlotte does not supply a complete account of the sitting. It gives no secure sequence of studio visits, no independently documented conversation and no exact day when Stuart put down his brush. Its value is more specific: it places an intimate purpose beside the visible evidence of an incompletely developed figure. Each helps explain the other without settling every question of intention.

What later family testimony can establish

Jane’s account matters because it identifies both a recipient and a state of finish. The 2004 catalogue quotes her statement that Stuart “could not be induced to finish it.” That wording conveys the family’s memory of the object as something left incomplete, even though its likeness was already recognizable. It should be distinguished from a statement written by Stuart while making the painting. [14]

The testimony also has a complicated documentary history. The catalogue describes a letter now lost and quotes it through Lawrence Park’s later publication. The Met’s current account refers to excerpts preserved on a label on the back of the picture. The two accounts assign different dates to the letter. The broader family recollection can be discussed without choosing an exact letter date that the surviving published evidence has not reconciled. [14]

This distinction separates three moments: the making of the portrait, Jane’s later recollection and the interpretation offered by museums and scholars. A statement about the first reaches us through the other two. Treating those moments separately preserves the account’s usefulness while keeping its retrospective character visible.

Jane’s recollection is therefore strongest when used for its limited, concrete contribution. It links the small self-image to her mother and says that it remained unfinished. It cannot make every brushstroke an expression of a particular episode in the marriage. The painting’s pose and surface still need to be considered on their own terms, alongside the family history.

Completion, intention and the small support

The word “unfinished” describes an important feature of the picture, but it does not explain everything the viewer sees. The head is sufficiently developed to make the surrounding incompletion striking. The difference between those areas gives the portrait much of its force: likeness has become persuasive before the full conventional apparatus of a portrait is in place.

Barratt raises the possibility that, for an intimate recipient, the work could be considered conceptually complete despite its unfinished surface. This is an interpretation of purpose, placed beside Jane’s statement rather than replacing it. The canvas can support both a family memory of incompletion and a modern appreciation of the image as a compelling whole. [15]

Its scale encourages that concentrated encounter. At 27 × 22.5 centimetres, it can be taken in at close range. The small support gives the head an intimacy quite different from a full-length figure built to command a larger room. Yet scale alone does not establish how or where Charlotte displayed it. The object’s size is secure; an imagined domestic installation is another matter. [1]

The later Athenaeum portrait offers a further way to consider Stuart’s uneven degrees of finish. The historical purpose of that Washington likeness differs from the self-image associated with Charlotte. The useful connection is the viewer’s experience of a developed head within a less resolved surrounding field. In each case, the face can hold attention without every part of the composition receiving the same treatment. [16]

Self-image within Stuart’s London career

Around the proposed date of this painting, Stuart’s London practice involved ambitious commissions and the demands of professional visibility. The success of The Skater at the 1782 Royal Academy exhibition had helped him establish an independent reputation. The small self-portrait belongs to the same broader period, but shows how different the scale and address of a likeness could become. [17]

William Grant’s skating figure occupies a tall canvas, with landscape, costume and bodily balance carrying the sitter’s presence across a large surface. Stuart’s own head asks for a much closer inspection. Comparing the two makes a distinction in purpose and presentation visible without turning them into separate artistic identities. The ability to organize a likeness operates at both scales.

Another point of reference is the earlier self-portrait held by the Redwood Library and Athenaeum in Newport, dated there to about 1778. The library identifies it as a bequest of Louisa Lee Waterhouse. Barratt’s 2004 discussion places that earlier painting beside the Met work when considering Stuart’s painted self-images. These are separate objects with separate histories, rather than two dates for one portrait. [18]

The Met image’s intensity has encouraged strong responses to Stuart’s personality. The narrow gaze and emphatic nose certainly affect how the face meets us, but a painted expression cannot supply an entire life story. His biography follows that larger history through evidence beyond this small canvas. Here, the distinctive achievement is closer at hand: a few coordinated areas of colour make a searching face emerge from lightly worked paint, retaining its presence across the transition from family keepsake to museum object.

Frequently Asked Questions

When did Stuart paint this self-portrait?

The Met dates it to about 1786. The association with that period depends on later family testimony connecting it with his wife and their marriage. [1] [13]

Is the painting oval?

The canvas is rectangular, with an oval field inside it. The dark corners are part of the whole object and should be distinguished from a separate decorative frame. [2]

Was it intended for Charlotte Stuart?

Jane Stuart’s later account says that her father painted it for her mother. This is family testimony, rather than a surviving commission or a contemporary statement by the artist. [13] [14]

Why is it unfinished?

Jane said that Stuart could not be persuaded to finish it. The precise reason remains uncertain. Barratt also considers whether its intimate purpose allowed the image to function as a complete likeness for its recipient. [14] [15]

Is this the same as the earlier Redwood self-portrait?

No. Redwood’s painting is dated about 1778, while the Met’s small canvas is dated about 1786. They are separate works. [18]
