John Singleton Copley by Gilbert Stuart: Introduction

John Singleton Copley turns towards the viewer within an oval of clouded sky. Powdered hair, a bright white neckcloth and a rich red coat give the painter a distinguished presence, but his concentrated face remains the centre of attention. Gilbert Stuart made the portrait around 1784 for a much larger display: it was mounted above Copley’s The Death of Major Peirson , together with likenesses of two men involved in publishing the picture. [1]

That original setting changes how the portrait can be understood. The height of the display, the neighbouring battle scene and the commercial relationships behind it all help explain a likeness that now survives as an independent painting.

An oval designed for a larger display

Copley’s portrait originally belonged to a collaboration involving painting, engraving and architecture. Robert Adam designed an elaborate frame for The Death of Major Peirson , with Stuart’s likenesses incorporated above the large rectangular canvas. Copley occupied the central position, accompanied by portraits of the engraver James Heath and the publisher and draughtsman Josiah Boydell. The arrangement made the people behind the picture part of its public presentation. [1]

Designs preserved at Sir John Soane’s Museum clarify the choices available. The museum identifies one scheme with three portraits, probably the version executed, and a simpler alternative containing Copley alone. The evidence for the fuller arrangement includes a newspaper description of the display in August 1784. The alternative designs reveal a process of selection; they should not be combined into one imagined finished frame. [13]

The oval was therefore more than a convenient boundary around a head and shoulders. It formed one element in an ornamental structure extending above another painting. Its scale and position had to make sense within that larger object, while still giving Copley a recognizable likeness of his own.

The relationship also established a hierarchy. Visitors could look from the dramatic event to the artist responsible for representing it. The portrait identified a maker whose achievement was displayed immediately below. Heath and Boydell widened that account of authorship to include the work of translating a painting into a print and bringing it before purchasers.

Seen alone, Stuart’s picture offers an encounter with another painter. Restoring the context in thought reveals a second function: Copley’s face helped introduce and authorize a public spectacle.

The face seen from below

Carrie Rebora Barratt explains the portrait in relation to its intended height, more than twelve feet above the viewer. She observes that Stuart slightly softened the definition of Copley’s deep-set eyes, making them appear larger and better able to catch attention from below. The unusual viewing conditions become part of the explanation for his treatment of the likeness. [14]

The head sits high within the oval. The shoulders turn, while the face comes back towards the spectator, creating an alert relationship across the small span of the image. Light catches the forehead, nose and white clothing; darker tones around the eyes concentrate the gaze. A firm jaw and upright carriage give the sitter considerable presence without the space available in a full-length portrait.

These features work together at different distances. The pale hair and neckcloth establish broad areas that remain distinct when the picture is seen from farther away. The face supplies more particular information as attention settles on it. Stuart coordinates a readily grasped design with the smaller differences that make a likeness individual.

It is useful to imagine looking upwards at the oval, while allowing the actual painting to retain its proportions. A modern reproduction places it close to eye level and separates it from the large canvas below. That makes study easier, but removes a condition for which Stuart had to provide. Barratt’s account restores the practical problem: the face needed to address people who were standing well beneath it.

Red velvet and a painted sky

The clothing gives Copley distinction without surrounding him with the tools of his trade. His red velvet coat forms a warm, substantial shape below the pale head. White ruffles break up the centre, while the powdered hair and tied queue complete the carefully presented appearance. Barratt contrasts Stuart’s concentration on the man with contemporary descriptions of Copley’s fondness for expensive dress. [15]

The sky makes the oval feel open despite its close framing. A lighter clouded passage appears beside the face, with a darker area behind the head and shoulder. The contrast sets off the silhouette and gives the figure room to turn. There is no need for an interior, an easel or a crowded collection of studio objects.

Barratt relates the format to fashionable Georgian portrait miniatures, particularly those associated with Richard Cosway. Oval shape, raised head, turned body and softly coloured sky offered Stuart an established way of presenting an individual. The resemblance concerns compositional habits rather than the physical size or medium of a miniature. This is a canvas portrait measuring more than half a metre across. [15]

The colours also helped connect it with Peirson . Barratt notes the relationship between Copley’s coat and the soldiers’ red uniforms, and between his sky and the atmosphere over Saint Helier. The portrait could thus remain separate in shape while seeming connected to the scene below. Its background participated in a larger visual arrangement, giving an apparently conventional sky a particular purpose. [15]

Copley, Boydell and the print market

The enterprise grew from an earlier successful collaboration. Copley and Boydell had arranged subscription sales for a print after The Death of the Earl of Chatham . According to Barratt, Boydell then paid Copley £800 in 1782 to paint The Death of Major Peirson , with an agreement to share the proceeds from its engraved reproduction. A large painting could attract an exhibition audience while also supporting a market in images that could circulate much more widely. [16]

The three portraits made that process visible. The Morning Herald account of 6 August 1784, reproduced in the NPG’s catalogue, identifies Copley at the centre, Heath as the engraver and Josiah Boydell as the maker of the drawing for the enterprise. Its description places the likenesses on the frame itself. The association was therefore built into the presentation of the painting, rather than supplied only in an advertisement elsewhere. [17]

Each man represented a different stage in making an image available. Copley supplied the painting; the drawing and engraving helped translate it into a reproducible form. Their collective appearance reminds us that the public life of a history painting could depend on work beyond the painter’s studio. The display gave those contributions faces.

Stuart’s own opportunity lay within this network. Boydell commissioned a larger series of portraits of artists and associates, including Stuart’s likenesses of Benjamin West and Joshua Reynolds . Copley’s portrait had a particularly close relationship with a named work and its presentation. Painting another artist could be both an exercise in characterization and a commission shaped by the publishing business. [18]

The result brings commerce into the interpretation without reducing the picture to an advertisement. Stuart still had to produce a convincing head. The display’s commercial purpose made the success of that individual likeness more consequential.

Admiration and professional rivalry

Copley’s family valued the portrait. His granddaughter Martha Babcock Amory recalled her father, Lord Lyndhurst, describing it as the “best and most agreeable likeness” of his father. Barratt quotes the recollection in discussing the image. It is a judgement transmitted through the family, with the warmth and particular authority that such testimony can carry. [19]

The praise accords with the impression Stuart gives: a composed and vigorous sitter, dressed carefully and meeting attention with a serious expression. It supports an account of the portrait’s favourable family reception. It does not establish every aspect of the relationship between the two painters, whose professional encounters are harder to document.

Stuart’s later reported opinions of Copley were mixed. Barratt brings together recollections that praise his industry and command of paint alongside criticisms of laborious execution and changes in his style after moving to London. These comments reach us through later witnesses, including accounts associated with William Dunlap and Henry Pickering. They show how admiration for another artist’s ability could coexist with strong reservations about his methods. [20]

Those opinions should also be kept in their time. Remarks remembered or recorded years later do not tell us precisely what Stuart thought throughout the portrait’s sittings. Nor does a flattering likeness erase the possibility of professional criticism. The picture and the recollections provide different kinds of evidence.

Stuart’s portrait is especially interesting because it gives Copley such persuasive public dignity. The sitter looks assured, while the handling allows the face to remain responsive and individual. Whatever the younger painter later said about Copley’s procedures, he had already demonstrated an ability to make a memorable image of the man.

The portrait as an independent object

The date when the portrait left the elaborate frame is unknown. The NPG’s provenance traces it through Copley and his family, eventually reaching the gallery in 1927 under Lady Lyndhurst’s bequest, after an intervening trust for her daughter Georgina, Lady Du Cane. The collection history preserves the family connection, even though the portrait’s original architectural setting has been lost. [5]

On its own, the oval encourages sustained attention to the head. Copley’s eyes no longer have to compete with a monumental battle scene beneath them. The red coat and cloudy background become elements of one concentrated image, rather than links between separate pictures. Independence changes the experience without cancelling the choices made for the earlier setting.

The history painting has also had a separate museum life. A photograph by Manvyi records its crated arrival at Jersey Museum on 3 April 2012, with the large wooden container suspended beside the building. That modern scene gives a practical sense of the demands of moving an imposing canvas. It documents a later event, distinct from the decorated frame and paired display of 1784. [21]

Putting the two histories beside one another makes the original collaboration easier to appreciate. Stuart’s relatively compact portrait once belonged physically above a painting large enough to demand substantial space and handling. The contrast between intimate likeness and public scale was present from the beginning.

Copley’s portrait consequently offers more than a record of one painter’s appearance. It shows Stuart solving a problem of likeness, viewing height and display within London’s art trade. Its force now comes from the head itself; its historical richness grows when that head is returned, in thought, to the larger enterprise for which it was painted.
