The Skater: Portrait of William Grant: Introduction

A gentleman glides across the ice with his arms folded, his dark clothes outlined against a pale winter sky. The pose looks composed, yet almost every part of the figure participates in movement. Gilbert Stuart painted The Skater in 1782, making a full-length portrait of William Grant of Congalton into an unusually vivid presentation of bodily skill. Its success at the Royal Academy exhibition helped establish the young painter’s independence in London. [1] [2]

The portrait brings together several kinds of achievement: a recognizable sitter, convincing balance, a winter setting and a composition strong enough to command attention in a crowded exhibition. The famous story of Stuart and Grant going skating adds another layer, although its details come through later recollection. The painting itself offers the firmer starting point: an individual who appears to move while remaining completely present to the viewer.

An unusual full-length portrait

The painting is large enough for Grant’s figure to have a commanding physical presence. Stuart gives him the centre of a tall canvas, with ample sky above and ice extending below his feet. The other skaters are much smaller and farther away. This difference in scale makes Grant unmistakably the principal subject even though he belongs to an active outdoor scene. The image remains a portrait rather than becoming a general view of winter recreation.

Grant was a Scottish lawyer associated with the estate of Congalton. Ellen G. Miles’s catalogue account places him within a family interested in portraiture: George Romney also painted him, and portraits of his children were attributed to John Opie. These connections help restore the particular sitter behind a familiar descriptive title. The Skater is not simply an invented elegant man demonstrating an activity; it originated as a commissioned likeness. [2]

Its full-length format also mattered to Stuart’s development. At the time he was working in the circle of Benjamin West, the American-born painter established in London. The challenge involved more than enlarging a head-and-shoulders portrait. A convincing body had to connect face, shoulders, arms, clothes and feet across a long vertical space. The skating subject made the demands especially clear because the figure’s balance depended on relationships between those parts. [11]

The grand scale recalls the conventions of ambitious society portraiture, while the action gives them a different direction. Grant is neither simply standing at ease nor posed beside the objects of an office. He demonstrates a cultivated physical accomplishment. The portrait communicates assurance through what the body appears able to do, placing skill alongside dress and bearing as part of the sitter’s public appearance. [12]

It would nevertheless be too sweeping to describe Stuart as the first painter to introduce movement into a portrait. Other artists explored active subjects and inventive poses. His particular achievement was to make skating sustain a large, individualized likeness, with the figure and the surrounding landscape working together. The novelty admired in 1782 belongs to that combination, rather than to an absolute absence of movement from all earlier portraiture. [12]

The skates and the ice

One skate meets the ice near a dark reflection while the other foot lifts to the side. The thin blades and small points of contact make the body’s weight a visible pictorial problem.

Smaller skaters in the distance

The smaller figures spread across the ice with bent knees, extended arms and changing directions. Their size helps establish depth around the much larger foreground sitter.

Figures beside the trees

Standing figures and a seated figure occupy the bank beneath the trees. Their quieter poses provide another scale and rhythm alongside the large moving silhouette.

How the figure moves across the ice

The folded arms give Grant an appearance of control. A beginner’s search for balance might be expressed through outstretched hands, but here the upper body is compact. The gloves, forearms and coat form a firm grouping across the chest. Below it, the legs create a contrasting pattern of bend and extension. The figure can therefore suggest movement without looking dispersed or unstable.

One skate bears the body while the other foot crosses behind. The blades meet the ice through a very small area relative to the height of the figure. That narrow connection makes the apparent balance striking. Stuart places enough visual weight in the supporting lower leg and foot for the body above to seem carried by them, while the crossing leg introduces a change of direction within the dark silhouette.

The head contributes to the action without following the torso mechanically. Grant looks away from a direct encounter with the viewer, while the body advances through the composition. The hat makes the turn legible at a distance. Its broad brim extends the shape of the head, and the curls of hair near the face add smaller movements against the lighter field. The painting’s animation emerges from coordinated differences rather than from one dramatic gesture.

Marks on the ice continue the suggestion of passage. The surface is crossed by curved tracks and interrupted by reflections and variations of grey. Beneath Grant, dark and light passages keep the skate from appearing attached to a featureless floor. The surrounding ice gives the movement somewhere to happen, while the pale sky and low distant landscape allow the figure’s outline to remain clear.

Miles relates Grant’s crossed arms to contemporary skating practice, citing Robert Jones’s 1772 treatise and its account of a suitable attitude for graceful movement. That connection grounds the pose in an activity rather than reducing it to a studio invention. It does not establish a modern named manoeuvre or require the painting to be read as a precise sequence of athletic instruction. [12]

The stillness of a painted image is consequently part of its effect. The viewer can examine the face, the arrangement of the arms and the contact of the skate for far longer than an actual glide would permit. Stuart gives movement an enduring shape. The portrait appears poised within an action, with its carefully organized forms sustaining the impression that the next instant could follow.

A gentleman on the ice

Grant’s clothing is predominantly dark, from his hat and coat to his breeches, stockings and shoes. The broad grey lapels, pale shirt and visible glove provide contrasting passages near the face and arms. The costume makes his silhouette unified without making it completely flat. Changes in tone describe the turn of a sleeve, a fold at the waist and the bend of a knee. [2]

The small figures behind him place that individual display within shared recreation. Some skate, while others stand or prepare their equipment near the bank. The distant pair on the viewer’s left performs a greeting movement identified in the catalogue as the Serpentine Greeting. Their gestures expand the range of activity while remaining subordinate to Grant. The background gives the portrait a social world without competing equally for attention. [12]

Skating in eighteenth-century London also carried distinctions of place and social behaviour. The NGA’s modern essay describes different reputations attached to the city’s skating locations and treats the Serpentine as a setting associated with refinement. That context helps explain why a leisure activity could serve an ambitious society portrait. Grant’s assurance is presented in an environment where appearance, company and physical accomplishment were visible to others. [13]

Julius Caesar Ibbetson’s Skaters on the Serpentine in Hyde Park , dated 1786, offers a useful comparison. Made in pen, ink and watercolour, it distributes attention among several figures on the ice, with buildings and trees surrounding them. People adopt different postures, move together or lose their balance. The NGA holds the work as 1987.82.1. It belongs to a later view of the same recreational setting, not to evidence that Stuart copied this drawing in 1782. [14]

The contrast makes Stuart’s choice clearer. Ibbetson creates a scene whose interest spreads across a company of skaters. Stuart organizes the wider activity around one sitter, who occupies a scale unavailable to any background participant. The winter subject connects the works, while the different distribution of attention separates a social scene from a commanding portrait.

Winter itself has also shaped interpretation. Miles discusses suggestions linking the restrained colour and crossed arms with melancholy, but questions whether those features establish that as the painting’s subject. Seasonal poetry offers another context for an image of skating and cold weather. Such proposals enrich the picture’s possible associations without diagnosing either Grant or Stuart from the appearance of a painted face. [15]

The famous outing and its uncertain details

The best-known account begins with a sitting interrupted by cold weather. According to the story transmitted by Charles Fraser to William Dunlap, Grant suggested that the day would be better spent skating. Stuart agreed, and the two went to the Serpentine. When the ice became dangerous, the more experienced Stuart guided Grant away by having him hold the painter’s coat. On returning, Stuart conceived the idea of portraying his sitter in the act of skating. [16]

The story has an appealing structure: an artist abandons a conventional appointment, proves his own skill and finds a novel portrait in the experience. Its route into print matters. Dunlap’s account was published much later and depended on Fraser’s report of what Stuart had said. It is not a contemporary diary of the outing or a verified transcript of a conversation between painter and sitter. [16]

Miles also notes a resemblance to stories about West’s success as a skater in London. West and Stuart were both remembered for their abilities on the ice, and the shared subject helps explain why their reputations became intertwined. It does not require all the details of either story to be rejected, but it cautions against treating the dramatic structure as independently documented evidence for each event. [16]

The secure painting history does not depend on confirming the rescue. Grant’s identity, the date of the portrait and its exhibition in 1782 can be studied separately from the anecdote. The convincing pose also stands on the evidence of the image and the examination of the painted surface. A later story may explain how Stuart wanted the invention remembered without supplying every detail of how the work was actually produced.

The background should be approached with similar care. Museum accounts associate the setting with the Serpentine, but the portrait is a composed winter landscape. Distant architecture and small figures should not be used as though they formed a photographic survey fixing the precise point where Grant stood. The association with London skating is more secure than a reconstruction of a single witnessed instant at an exact spot. [2]

The Royal Academy exhibition of 1782

Stuart exhibited the painting at the Royal Academy in 1782 as Portrait of a gentleman skating , catalogue number 190. The title identified the activity without giving Grant’s name. The display brought the large, unusual figure into a setting where portraits competed for attention among works by established artists. It was an opportunity for Stuart to be recognized beyond his connection with West. [17]

Contemporary responses praised the invention and the likeness, although opinion on the handling was not unanimous. Miles quotes a letter signed “Candid” in the Morning Chronicle, and London Advertiser of 9 May 1782, which called the figure “reposed, animated and well drawn.” Other criticism questioned Stuart’s freedom of brushwork and taste. The reception was therefore more varied than an unbroken chorus of admiration, even while the portrait attracted substantial interest. [17]

Later recollections made that interest more dramatic. Stories describe Grant visiting in the same clothes and being recognized by a crowd, and Stuart becoming anxious about the attention his work received. Those episodes belong to the remembered success of the exhibition. They are different kinds of evidence from a dated review or the catalogue entry, and need not be repeated as precisely observed scenes to explain the painting’s importance. [17]

Barratt’s London account places the success within a transition toward an independent practice. After the exhibition, Stuart established his own rooms, and further portrait commissions followed. His association with West had supplied training, contacts and a working environment; the public response now helped establish his name as a portraitist in his own right. Exhibiting at the Academy did not make him an Academy member or an enrolled student. [18]

The connection with Benjamin West remained part of that history. Stuart’s portrait of his mentor belongs to a wider exchange among artists and patrons, while the later full-length Captain John Gell shows him continuing to work with ambitious standing formats. The success of The Skater opened possibilities rather than providing a formula he simply repeated unchanged. [18] [19]

Nor did recognition end his financial difficulties. Barratt describes an expanding London practice alongside overcommitted work and persistent debts. The exhibition is a turning point in professional visibility, not a complete explanation of the years that followed. The biography follows those changes through London, Dublin and Stuart’s later American career. [18]

Changes beneath the finished pose

The painting’s apparent ease rests on a surface that records reconsideration. The NGA’s 1995 technical account identifies a finely woven twill support with a thin white preparatory layer. Twill is a fabric with a diagonal weave. The report suggests that the canvas had been primed before use and describes preliminary drawing made loosely with paint and brush, parts of which remained visible within the image. [20]

Paint is generally thin, with selected thicker and more controlled passages around the upper body, face, collar and sky near the head. That variation helps explain why the figure can appear strongly established without every area receiving the same density of paint. It also prevents a single label such as “thin glazes” from describing the entire work. Stuart’s style and technique examines related differences across other portraits. [20]

The catalogue records pentimenti , traces of earlier arrangements, in the hat, shoulders, coat tail and a leg. The final pose therefore emerged through adjustments to its component parts. A change near the shoulder can affect the apparent direction of the torso; a change lower down can alter the sense of weight or passage. The technical findings give material substance to the difficulty of coordinating a full-length figure. [20]

X-radiography also informed the catalogue’s account of the sequence. Miles describes the surrounding background as apparently painted after the figure had been established, with cloud brushwork defining edges near the head and shoulders. The effect of a dark figure against a light field was built through successive actions on the canvas. It is not simply a matter of placing an outline over a completed landscape. [20]

The support’s boundaries have a history as well. The report notes unfolded top and bottom tacking edges and cut lateral margins. Those observations concern the physical object and its presentation, rather than changes in Grant’s pose. The current museum measurement should be used for the painting’s size; the older report’s dimensions and edge history should not be combined into an invented explanation for every difference between published measurements. [20] [1]

These findings belong to a documented examination of this painting. They do not establish a universal method for every Stuart portrait or turn the written report into a new examination of its present condition. They show that an image of effortless movement could involve revision, selective finish and a support whose later treatment affected how the whole work is encountered.

From a British family portrait to Washington

The portrait remained with Grant’s descendants for generations. Its attribution was not consistently remembered: when exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1878, it was assigned to Thomas Gainsborough. The NGA catalogue records that attribution as part of the work’s history and discusses the later recovery of Stuart’s authorship. A famous image can therefore have a history of uncertainty even when the sitter’s family preserved it. [21]

The National Gallery of Art acquired the painting in 1950. Its current identifier, 1950.18.1, and the credit Andrew W. Mellon Collection reconnect the familiar title to that particular canvas. The museum’s record traces the family succession and acquisition; it also distinguishes the modern object from changing titles in earlier exhibitions. [1]

Encountering it in an American museum adds a later setting to a portrait made in London of a Scottish sitter. The painting belongs to Stuart’s transatlantic career, but its original purpose should not be replaced by his subsequent fame as a painter of presidents. In 1782 he was establishing himself within London portraiture, responding to a particular commission and a particular exhibition culture. [11]

The later George Washington portraits would demand different choices about scale, dress, repetition and public authority. The Skater already demonstrates capacities important to that future work: giving a likeness presence, selecting how much detail the surrounding setting needs and organizing the body within a convincing whole. Its distinctive achievement remains the transformation of skating into a sustained encounter with one person.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who is the skater?

William Grant of Congalton, a Scottish lawyer. He is a different person from Sir William Grant, Master of the Rolls. [2]

Was the skating outing a documented rescue?

The story comes through later recollection transmitted by Charles Fraser to William Dunlap. It should be distinguished from secure evidence for the painting’s date and exhibition. [16]

When did Stuart exhibit it?

At the Royal Academy in 1782, as Portrait of a gentleman skating , number 190. [17]

Did Stuart change the pose while painting?

The NGA technical account records revisions in the hat, shoulders, coat tail and a leg. Those findings belong to this particular canvas. [20]

Is Ibbetson’s skating scene a source for Stuart’s portrait?

The selected drawing is dated 1786, four years after Stuart’s painting. It provides a comparison with another treatment of skating on the Serpentine, not a demonstrated model for The Skater . [14]
