George Washington: The Vaughan Portrait: Introduction

George Washington looks toward the viewer from a setting of dark clothing, pale hair and warm red paint. The portrait concentrates on his head and upper body, with few accessories to interrupt the encounter. Gilbert Stuart established this first major Washington portrait type in 1795. The canvas now known as the Vaughan portrait , in the National Gallery of Art, preserves that early likeness through a replica whose name became attached to the wider family of related images. [1]

The distinction matters. This painting is not the first life study that Stuart later said he erased. It is a particular surviving canvas with its own commission and history, and a starting point for understanding how a Washington likeness could be observed, repeated, interpreted and sent across the Atlantic. A name that belongs to a portrait type

The title recalls the painting’s early owners. Philadelphia merchant John Vaughan commissioned portraits of Washington and sent this example to his father, Samuel Vaughan, in London. Its passage through the family gave a particular version a name that later writers also used for the composition. The term therefore connects an individual canvas with a broader portrait type. It does not identify every related Washington as the same physical object. [1]

The NGA canvas is catalogued as 1942.8.27. Another Washington in the same collection, called the Vaughan-Sinclair portrait, carries accession 1940.1.6. Related portraits elsewhere have further histories. Their similar heads can make reproduction errors easy, but the commissions, dimensions and ownership of one should not be transferred to another. The exact museum identifier anchors the discussion when titles and compositions overlap. [1] [2]

An artist’s replica is a repeated version made by the artist from an established work or likeness. The word does not require every stroke to be identical. In Stuart’s Washington portraits, variations in background, costume and handling can distinguish works within the same type. The shared design links them; study of the individual paintings explains their differences. [13]

For the named Vaughan canvas, that distinction also concerns an older claim to originality. It was long identified as the first Washington painted from life. Ellen G. Miles’s catalogue account instead explains it as a replica acquired from Stuart in 1795. The history of the title is secure enough to retain, while the meaning once attached to it requires qualification. Familiar names can survive a revision in scholarship. [1]

The painting’s ownership continued beyond the Vaughans. The NGA traces its passage to Philadelphia collector Joseph Harrison Jr. around 1851, through his widow and a 1912 sale to Thomas B. Clarke, and eventually into the Mellon collection before the gallery received it in 1942. The familiar title therefore preserves an early part of a much longer history. Its collection number identifies the painting’s later museum acquisition, not the date when Stuart painted it. [2]

The turned head

The pale hair and long face are strongly separated from the reddish dark background. The three-quarter turn lets the lit cheek and the narrower far side of the face play different roles.

The white neckcloth

Angular light and shadow turn the white fabric into a sequence of folds. Its bright vertical shape draws the eye down from the head into the dark coat.

Painting Washington in 1795

Stuart returned to the United States in 1793 with the ambition of painting Washington. After working in New York, he moved to Philadelphia late in 1794. Personal introductions helped him approach the president, whose public responsibilities made arranging sittings a practical challenge. Washington’s fame also meant that the opportunity involved more than one prospective portrait: an admired likeness could become the model for further commissions. [14]

A list dated 20 April 1795 records thirty-two men ordering thirty-nine Washington portraits. Miles uses it to show how demand for copies formed early, drawing together patrons in America and Britain. The list documents the market Stuart was assembling, but it does not securely settle every question about when Washington first posed. Orders, sittings and completion of particular canvases are related events with different kinds of surviving evidence. [14]

The date 1795 is well established for the first type. The season and location of the initial sittings are less certain. Later accounts suggest different chronologies, and proposed venues lack equally conclusive support. Rembrandt Peale’s retrospective testimony forms part of that debate, alongside statements passed through other writers. Assigning a precise day would make the evidence seem more complete than it is. [15]

The uncertainty should not obscure the event’s significance in Stuart’s career. He had sought access to a sitter whose image was already widely wanted. Capturing Washington’s features gave him both an artistic challenge and a practical resource. The surviving Vaughan paintings show the first important formulation of that likeness, before the different head developed in the Athenaeum portrait became the most familiar basis for later versions. [14]

The lost study and Stuart’s later statement

A surviving letter carries important evidence about the originals. Washington wrote it on 11 April 1796 to arrange a sitting associated with the later Lansdowne commission. In March 1823, Stuart added an explanation concerning the full-length portrait then owned by Samuel Williams. He described it as “the only original painting I ever made of Washington except one I own myself.” He also stated that he had erased another original. [16]

The retained painting is understood as the Athenaeum head. The erased work belongs to the first portrait type, represented by surviving Vaughan replicas. This account explains how three principal types can coexist with Stuart’s statement that only two originals remained. It does not establish three sittings, three surviving first studies or a complete inventory of every Washington he painted. [1] [16]

The document has two distinct dates and purposes. Washington’s appointment belongs to 1796; Stuart’s interpretation was added almost twenty-seven years later. Other annotations on the paper add further layers of explanation. Keeping them separate allows the letter to remain useful without treating all its writing as a single contemporary record of the earliest sittings. [16]

The NGA portrait’s former identification as the life study developed in the nineteenth century. Miles discusses Rembrandt Peale’s statements and the histories attached to a version owned by the painter William Winstanley. The evidence does not justify combining that unlocated picture with the painting bought for Samuel Vaughan. Similarity of type cannot repair gaps in an individual provenance. [1]

Material interpretation has also entered the debate. Miles sets Dorinda Evans’s reading of a roughened area visible in an X-ray beside conservator Ann Hoenigswald’s different suggestion that it could reflect changes to the red background. The discussion shows why a technical image needs interpretation. An unusual passage can prompt competing explanations rather than automatically proving that a canvas is the erased original or a particular first study. [17]

The visible likeness

Washington’s body angles toward the viewer’s right, while his eyes establish a more direct encounter. The head occupies a high position within the rectangle. White hair spreads outward at the sides, its brightness set against a field that moves between warm red and deeper brown. The pale shirt carries light down from the face into the larger dark shape of the coat.

The surrounding colour helps give the face physical presence. Warmer passages in the cheeks and nose stand beside paler areas of forehead and lower face. Darker marks define the eyes, the mouth and selected edges without turning the whole head into a uniformly outlined shape. The portrait’s strength comes from the relation between these parts, not from the amount of descriptive detail distributed across every passage.

Miles describes the careful treatment of the face and the thin dark lines placed around the eyes and below the mouth. The shirt ruffle receives less attention than in some related replicas. This difference directs the viewer toward the features and makes the supporting costume comparatively quiet. The painting offers a particular hierarchy of finish within an apparently familiar presidential image. [17]

The warm field also remains an active part of the painted surface. It surrounds the light hair and contributes to the contrast around the head. Technical evidence discussed in the catalogue suggests that parts of the image were reconsidered, but the visible colour should not be translated directly into a diagnosis of Washington’s mood. The portrait records Stuart’s construction of a likeness, not a transparent measure of the sitter’s inner state. [17]

The catalogue notes that the red background paint reaches the edge of the lighter hair rather than extending beneath it. Such observations help distinguish the apparent simplicity of a portrait from the sequence of decisions involved in making it. The hair and surrounding field meet through particular boundaries of paint. Their present relationship is visible in ordinary light, while the technical examination contributes another kind of evidence about how the surface developed. [17]

Replicas, patrons and circulation

The Vaughan family’s painting crossed the Atlantic early. Thomas Holloway engraved the likeness in 1796, and it appeared in the English edition of Johann Caspar Lavater’s Essays on Physiognomy . The print’s inscription identifies a picture painted by Stuart in 1795 in Samuel Vaughan’s possession. Painting date, engraving date and publication history therefore belong to different stages of the image’s circulation. [18]

The National Portrait Gallery holds an impression as NPG.79.139, an engraving on paper by Holloway after Stuart. Its image measures 23 × 19.7 cm within a larger sheet. The pale margins and lettering make the object more than a cropped monochrome likeness. They identify its maker and connection to a particular painting, giving documentary information outside the engraved portrait itself. [19]

Holloway’s print transforms colour and paint into lines and tonal patterns. The coat, hair, shirt and surrounding field acquire different textures, while the familiar turn of the head links the image to Stuart’s painting. Looking at the whole sheet beside the oil makes both continuity and adaptation visible. The printmaker’s contribution deserves its own credit, rather than being absorbed into Stuart’s authorship of the source likeness.

The Lavater connection also supplies a historical context for studying a face. Physiognomy claimed to infer character from physical features, an approach that interested Stuart and some contemporaries. Miles carefully distinguishes Lavater’s comments about engravings after Charles Willson Peale from the later placement of Stuart’s Washington within the English edition. Those judgements should not be presented as Lavater’s direct assessment of this particular Stuart painting. Nor are physiognomic claims reliable ways of establishing a person’s character. [18]

Painted replicas reached patrons through related networks of commerce, politics and friendship. Miles notes variations among the surviving examples and cautions against a simple sequence based on the assumption that the named Vaughan must be the first original. The works are best approached through their individual histories as well as their shared composition. [13]

The background itself varies within the family. Miles describes curtains and glimpses of pink and blue sky in the Frick and Harvard versions, and a curtain with some sky in the Winterthur portrait. A red surrounding field is therefore not the defining feature of every Vaughan image. Those differences enlarge the comparison beyond faces alone and show how an established likeness could be placed within a different pictorial setting. [13]

From Vaughan to Athenaeum and Lansdowne

The Vaughan type offers a different turn and surrounding field from the Athenaeum portrait . The latter survives as an unfinished original paired with Martha Washington and became the source of many later replicas. The Lansdowne portrait carries a related later likeness into a standing figure with elaborate furniture and symbols of public office. These changes in format bring different demands and different effects. [20]

Comparing all three prevents one familiar Washington from replacing the others. Vaughan concentrates the encounter within a relatively compact finished portrait. Athenaeum exposes a developed face within broad unfinished areas. Lansdowne expands the image into a ceremonial public setting. Their shared sitter provides continuity, while pose, scale, finish and purpose keep the experiences distinct.

The Washington portraits comparison follows those relationships across the types. Stuart’s biography places the Philadelphia commissions within his wider career, and his style and technique explores the varied handling through which the likenesses were constructed. The named Vaughan canvas remains valuable both as an early image of Washington and as an example of how a painting’s familiar title can preserve a history that scholarship continues to clarify.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Vaughan portrait Stuart’s first original Washington?

The NGA canvas is a surviving replica of the first type. Stuart later stated that he erased an original, which scholarship distinguishes from the named Vaughan painting. [1]

Who were the Vaughans?

John Vaughan was the Philadelphia merchant who commissioned the painting for his father, Samuel Vaughan, in London. Their ownership gave the portrait type its familiar name. [1]

Is Vaughan-Sinclair the same painting?

No. The named Vaughan is NGA 1942.8.27; Vaughan-Sinclair is NGA 1940.1.6. They are separate works with related compositions. [1]

Who made the early engraving?

Thomas Holloway engraved the likeness after Stuart in 1796. The NPG impression, NPG.79.139, retains the surrounding sheet and identifying lettering. [19]
