Captain John Gell by Gilbert Stuart: Introduction
Captain John Gell stands on a rocky shore, one hand pointing towards the sea while his head turns in the opposite direction. His dark blue naval coat, edged with gold, sets him apart from the shifting clouds and water. Gilbert Stuart painted this imposing full-length portrait in 1785, adapting a successful British tradition to an officer recently returned from service overseas. The picture offered two public identities at once: Gell as an experienced commander, and Stuart as a painter capable of competing in London’s leading exhibition. [1]
The portrait rewards attention to both. Its uniform and posture construct an image of professional authority, while its reception reveals how strongly a painting’s reputation could depend on its neighbours, its critics and the rivalries of the Royal Academy.

A captain on a dramatic shore
The painting is more than two metres high. Gell’s complete standing figure occupies its centre, with enough space above and around him to make the setting part of his presentation. Dark rock anchors the lower left, while the lighter distance opens towards a ship. The landscape gives the officer a maritime world without turning the portrait into a crowded account of an engagement. [13]
The direction of his gesture matters. His pointing hand reaches across the body, but the face turns away from that action. Instead of following a single straight line from eyes to finger, the viewer moves between them. The arrangement gives a stationary sitter the suggestion of attention and command. His feet are also differently directed, producing a controlled turn through the figure.
Barratt describes the shoreline as a nonspecific stage. It should therefore be approached as a setting that makes Gell’s profession legible, rather than as an identified coast where the action of a named battle is unfolding. The ship and weather provide context; they do not by themselves establish a particular historical episode. This distinction leaves room to appreciate the portrait’s drama without mistaking its scenery for a documentary view. [13]
Gell brought substantial naval experience to the commission. Barratt records his command of the Thetis during the American Revolution and subsequent service in the East Indies aboard the Monarca . He returned to England early in 1785. The spring exhibition gives a practical limit to the portrait’s production: Stuart had to complete a very large canvas in time for that public appearance. The precise sequence of sittings is less securely known. [13]
Seen against that background, the painting condenses a career into an encounter. Uniform, gesture, ship and sea do the work that a much longer narrative of service might otherwise perform.

The head turned across the body
The face turns towards one side while the shoulders and pointing arm establish another direction. Pale hair and a high collar keep the head distinct from the surrounding sky.
The pointing gesture
The extended finger projects beyond the coat, followed by the bright cuff and sleeve trim. Its direction connects the figure with the space beside him.
The hat and lowered hand
The other hand gathers a dark hat and its pale decorative edging. The irregular silhouette breaks the otherwise long, clean edge of the uniform.
Uniform and professional identity
Gell wears the full-dress uniform of a naval captain with more than three years’ seniority. Barratt identifies the cream lining, gold edging and anchor-decorated buttons of the blue coat, together with the pale waistcoat and lower garments, white shirt, black neckcloth and sword with a tasselled hilt. These details locate him within a particular professional hierarchy. His later advancement to admiral should not be read backwards into the rank represented here. [14]
Stuart makes the uniform a strong organizing structure. Gold traces the outer edges of the lapels and cuffs, leading the eye across the upper body towards the extended arm. The pale waistcoat opens a bright area beneath the face, while the long dark coat gives the figure weight against the lighter water. The clothing supplies both information and a pattern of colour.
The hat is held low beside the sword rather than worn. This leaves the powdered hair and face exposed against the sky. The bare head, pointing hand and conspicuous dress all remain readable at a distance, an advantage for a portrait intended to be seen in company with other large pictures. Looking closer adds the smaller distinctions of fastening, trim and equipment.
The face interrupts the uniform’s ceremonial display. Warm colouring in the cheeks and restrained modelling around the eyes give Gell an individual presence within an established formula. The picture’s authority depends on that combination. A generic officer could wear similar clothes and occupy a similar shore, but the particular head makes the public role belong to this sitter.
Professional dress also changes how we read the gesture. Against the naval setting, the pointing hand can suggest direction and responsibility. There is no need to assign it a specific spoken order. Stuart gives command a visible shape through the coordination of body, clothing and surroundings.
Working within Reynolds’s tradition
Barratt connects the composition with Joshua Reynolds’s celebrated full-length portrait of Augustus Keppel, painted more than thirty years earlier. The comparison explains the combination of turned head, extended hand, differently directed legs and stormy coastline. Stuart was adapting a recognizable language of elevated military portraiture, in which a contemporary officer could acquire something of the bearing associated with classical sculpture. [15]
Reynolds painted Captain the Honourable Augustus Keppel in 1752–53. The National Maritime Museum identifies Keppel’s clothing as a version of naval undress uniform, distinct from Gell’s full dress. Its account associates the storm and wreckage with the loss of Keppel’s ship Maidstone , following an explanation given by Reynolds’s former pupil James Northcote. That proposed episode belongs to Keppel’s portrait; it does not identify the event behind Stuart’s shore. [16]
The figures also differ in their movement. Keppel appears to stride across the foreground, with an arm reaching towards the rock. Gell is more firmly planted, and his pointing arm crosses the bright front of his uniform. Stuart reverses and adjusts relationships within the composition rather than reproducing every part of Reynolds’s design. The likeness and professional clothing retain their own character.
Reynolds’s role may have extended beyond providing an artistic example. He had painted Gell’s older brother Philip, and Barratt raises the possibility that he recommended Stuart for this commission. The connection is plausible, but the recommendation remains a possibility. It should not be turned into a documented agreement between the two painters. [17]
Their relationship was nevertheless significant. Stuart had already painted Reynolds’s own portrait , and the older artist helped him obtain other work. Gell shows how professional support and artistic borrowing could reinforce each other. Stuart could acknowledge an established master while demonstrating that he could sustain a large, ambitious portrait under his own name.

A Royal Academy competition
Gell entered the Royal Academy exhibition of 1785 with two other portraits by Stuart, representing Admiral Barrington and Thomas Dawson. All three were placed in the Great Room. Barratt cites William Dunlap’s recollection of their prominent lighting and positions, but prominence also exposed a painter to direct comparison. Gell shared a wall with five portraits by Reynolds, including his much-admired full-length Prince of Wales. [18]
One contemporary reviewer thought that elsewhere Gell would have looked excellent, but that the neighbouring Reynolds paintings worked against it. The judgement reveals how exhibition display could shape an assessment. A portrait was encountered within a busy field of competing claims, rather than with the visual space and explanatory attention it might receive on its own. [18]
John Hoppner’s review was more complicated than a simple endorsement. In the passage reproduced by Barratt, he praised “a plain and admirably well painted portrait” while using Stuart’s restraint to attack the elaborate effects of a rival picture by John Singleton Copley . Hoppner was himself exhibiting portraits and concluded by proposing his own work as a suitable companion to Gell. His intervention belongs to the competitive circumstances it describes. [19]
He also expressed reservations. He questioned the handling of the water and considered possible objections to the figure’s stiffness and cool correctness, even while offering explanations for them. Extracting only the praise loses this mixture of advocacy, criticism and self-promotion. The complete passage gives a more revealing sense of what Stuart faced at the exhibition. [19]
These responses make the painting’s position unusually vivid. Adopting an admired tradition did not guarantee an uncomplicated welcome. It supplied critics with further opportunities to measure Stuart against established painters and to use his work in arguments about their own preferences.

The contrast Hoppner noticed between figure and water can also guide close looking. Gell’s head, costume and equipment have relatively definite boundaries. The sky and sea are broader and less sharply resolved. Barratt describes this difference as part of Stuart’s adaptation of Reynolds: carefully articulated passages in the figure gain emphasis against a more freely painted background. Different degrees of finish contribute to one composition. [20]
Follow the gold edge of the coat and then look towards the clouds. The former is a sequence of controlled lines and accents, repeatedly locating the body within its clothing. The latter moves through broad changes of tone, allowing one area to merge into another. The weather has atmosphere because it is less insistently described than the person standing before it.
The face occupies a different scale of attention again. Its warm lights and small transitions concentrate recognition, while the coat establishes the figure’s larger shape. These shifts do not require an explanation involving several painters. They are visible choices about where the viewer should look and how much information each part of the image needs to carry.
Stuart had explored another relationship between a standing figure and an outdoor setting in The Skater , his 1782 portrait of William Grant. There, folded arms and a moving body make a distinctive sporting portrait. Gell replaces that activity with the signs of naval service, yet both pictures give a full-length sitter an identity through bodily arrangement and surroundings. Grant’s name and the earlier date are established by the NGA’s owning record. [3]
The comparison shows why full-length portraiture asked more of Stuart than extending a likeness down to the feet. He had to coordinate face, hands, clothing, stance and a substantial field of space. Gell’s formality is a particular solution to that problem, shaped by his profession and by the expectations of a public exhibition.
Later portraits and the surviving canvas
Gell also sat to Reynolds. The National Maritime Museum dates that separate three-quarter-length portrait to 1786 and identifies Admiral Sir Edward Hughes as its commissioner. It measures 127 × 101.5 cm, substantially smaller than Stuart’s canvas. Its rocky setting and captain’s uniform establish an obvious relationship, but the two paintings belong to different commissions and dates. Reynolds’s picture entered the Greenwich Hospital collection through Sir Hugh Palliser’s bequest in 1796. [21]
Barratt reports seven sittings with Reynolds in January and February following Stuart’s exhibition year. She also discusses an earlier pointing-arm arrangement in Reynolds’s picture and a separate bust-length Gell by Stuart in private ownership. These comparisons suggest a network of related likenesses. They do not make the private bust a cropped portion of the Met canvas or establish it as a preparatory study. [22]
Such distinctions matter because a sitter’s name alone can conceal very different objects. Here, artist, format, date and collection provide the necessary bearings. The large 1785 full-length is Stuart’s Met painting; the 1786 three-quarter-length at Greenwich is Reynolds’s. Their shared subject makes comparison productive without making the works interchangeable.
The Met acquired Stuart’s portrait in 2000 through the Dorothy Schwartz Gift, Joseph Pulitzer Bequest and 2000 Benefit Fund. Its accession number, 2000.450, identifies the surviving canvas independently of the other Gell portraits. That modern acquisition is a secure point in its ownership history, rather than a reason to supply an undocumented continuous chain from the original commission. [5]
Within Stuart’s career , Gell preserves an ambitious London moment. A naval officer returned from distant service becomes the centre of a carefully constructed public image. A painter associated with Benjamin West demonstrates his command of Reynolds’s example. Around both stand the pressures of an exhibition in which pictures, reputations and rival arguments competed for attention.

Frequently Asked Questions
Barratt describes it as a nonspecific dramatic shoreline. The naval setting supports Gell’s professional identity, but a particular battle or coast is not securely identified. [13]
Barratt identifies Reynolds’s earlier full-length as a model for Stuart’s combination of turned head, pointing hand, arranged stance and stormy shore. The sitters and uniforms remain distinct. [15]
It belongs to The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, accession 2000.450. The oil painting measures 240 × 148.6 cm without its frame. [2]

Look again at the images and ideas explored in Captain John Gell by Gilbert Stuart. These editorial prompts invite your observations.
Compare the direction of Gell’s eyes with his pointing hand. How does their separation affect the impression of command? Then compare his stance with Keppel’s and William Grant’s: what changes when a portrait presents service, movement or leisure?
