Gilbert Stuart: Style and Technique: Introduction

Gilbert Stuart ’s portraits can make a face seem immediately present through a few relationships of colour, light and shadow. The surrounding clothes and setting may be richly developed or left at an early stage. That variation is central to his art: a convincing likeness does not require every part of the canvas to receive the same treatment. His work rewards attention to what is fully described, what remains suggestive and how those different passages operate together. [1]

Technical studies add evidence that ordinary photographs cannot supply. They identify supports and preparatory layers, distinguish thicker from thinner paint and reveal changes made during painting. Surviving accounts by other artists provide a complementary record of Stuart’s advice. The strongest understanding comes from keeping these different kinds of evidence connected to the particular portrait or conversation they describe. [2]

The paintings overview provides routes through the work. Here the emphasis falls on how selected paintings were constructed and how their surfaces produce an effect.

Likeness before accessories

The small Self-Portrait at the Metropolitan Museum of Art offers a concentrated starting point. The head is much more firmly established than the lightly indicated shirt and surrounding field. Dark touches describe hair and the shadowed parts of the face, while warmer and paler tones give the features their physical weight. The image remains forceful even though much of the ordinary apparatus of a formal portrait is absent. [1]

Barratt’s catalogue account describes Stuart blocking in the head with opaque paint and developing it with more transparent hues. This gives a useful distinction between establishing a form and bringing it toward a desired finish. The preliminary arrangement already has to account for the head’s proportions, direction and relation to the light. Later touches can clarify those relationships, but they do not substitute for them. [1]

Other artists recorded Stuart’s preference for beginning with the larger masses of a head. Accounts discussed in the catalogue describe blunt brushwork establishing the principal angles and areas of illumination. Such remarks help explain the strength of a lightly worked portrait without proving that every canvas followed an identical sequence. They also direct attention toward the relations between features, rather than toward a list of small details completed independently. [1]

Clothes and accessories nevertheless contribute to likeness. The needle and thread in Catherine Brass Yates organize the hands and establish a particular encounter with the sitter. In the Reynolds portrait, a gold snuff box gives habitual action a place within a likeness of the Academy’s president. These objects work differently: one sustains an exacting domestic gesture, the other introduces a personal habit into an artist’s public image. [3] [4]

Colour and the modelling of flesh

Stuart’s approach to flesh depends on changes within colour. A face contains warmer and cooler passages, light falling on projecting features, and shadows whose colour relates to the surrounding paint. The technical description of Catherine Brass Yates identifies a thin grey preparatory layer that participates in the flesh tones as well as the clothing. The sense of a face is therefore built through relationships between layers and adjacent strokes, not solely through a firmly drawn outer boundary. [3]

A brief instruction recorded by Matthew Harris Jouett captures one aspect of Stuart’s concern: “Load your brush, but keep your tints as separate as you can.” Theodore Bolton reproduced the words in the technical compilation published with Park’s catalogue. The advice emphasizes the clarity of colour in an individual touch. Its transmission through another artist’s notes matters: this is reported teaching, not a systematic manual prepared for publication by Stuart himself. [5]

The remark becomes more useful when considered alongside a painting. Separate touches can meet closely enough for a face to read as a coherent volume, while their differences remain visible at nearer range. The small self-portrait offers a clear example of how a few darker and lighter passages establish the nose, brow and eye sockets. The modelling results from their combined effect. It does not require the whole surface to become uniformly smooth. [1]

Nor does thin paint mean transparent paint in every passage. Opaque paint can establish a light form, while a more transparent layer modifies colour or deepens a shadow. The self-portrait entry describes both kinds of application; Worcester’s Morton study records another sequence of sketching, shadow and subsequent mid-tones and highlights. These object-specific accounts show why a single phrase such as “thin glazes” cannot describe everything Stuart did with colour. [1] [6]

Thin paint, loaded touches and varied finish

The National Gallery’s technical account of The Skater describes paint that is generally thin, with thicker and more controlled passages in parts of the sitter’s upper body, face and collar, and in the sky around the head. The variation helps connect the commanding figure with the larger wintry setting. It also cautions against describing the whole painting as either uniformly thin or heavily worked. [2]

Catherine Brass Yates provides a different range of marks. The same catalogue records fluid, raised highlights and thin, dry outlines that define selected forms. Its grey ground —the preparatory layer beneath the paint—can remain active as a middle tone or shadow. Some effects depend on the paint applied above it; others depend on allowing that underlying tone to contribute to the image. The luminous fabrics do not come from one undifferentiated coat of white. [3]

Raised paint, or impasto , is therefore a matter of degree and location. Worcester’s technical notes on Sarah Wentworth Apthorp Morton describe slight impasto in the white highlights. They also distinguish an initial sketch and thin shadow passages from later development. Mid-tones and highlights were applied over dry earlier paint. That sequence differs from the idea of a portrait produced entirely in one wet session, however spontaneous the finished image may appear. [6]

Looking between these works changes what finish means. A face, cap, sleeve or background can receive the treatment needed for its role within a particular image. Sharpness in every passage would create a different relationship between the parts. Stuart’s surfaces remain especially engaging because detailed and suggestive areas can coexist, allowing the eye to move between a convincing person and the marks through which that presence has been constructed.

Grounds, supports and changes

The support and ground give painting a physical foundation. The Skater is on twill, a fabric with a diagonal weave, and has a thin white ground. The Yates portrait uses plain-weave fabric and a grey ground. Worcester’s Morton painting is also on twill, with a warm white preparation that the technical report considers probably applied by the artist. The weave remains visible through the thin application. These differences make it important to identify the painting before describing “Stuart’s canvas.” [2] [3] [6]

The textured linen of Baron FitzGibbon introduces another possibility. Cleveland identifies it as possibly a tablecloth. That qualified observation belongs to this large Dublin portrait and should retain its uncertainty. It does not establish that Stuart regularly painted on household linen or that every textured support had the same origin. [7]

Wood became important in his Boston practice as well. Barratt discusses panels of yellow pine and mahogany with scored surfaces, whose diagonal texture could recall a twill canvas. The catalogue considers possible connections with restrictions on imported supplies, while noting that Stuart continued to use panels when those circumstances changed. The physical choice and a proposed explanation for it are related, but separate, parts of the account. [8]

Changes within the paint reveal composition developing. A pentimento is a trace of an earlier arrangement beneath a later one. The Skater contains revisions to the hat, shoulders, coat tail and a leg. In Morton’s portrait, the technical study records arms first crossed and then raised. Such evidence gives substance to the act of reconsideration, even where a reproduction’s scale or the upper paint layer makes the earlier position difficult to see. [2] [6]

The physical edges have a history too. The National Gallery reports that The Skater ’s top and bottom tacking edges were unfolded, while its lateral tacking margins had been cut. These are changes to the support’s presentation. They help explain why the boundaries and dimensions of a surviving painting require their own evidence, alongside an account of the composition represented on it. [2]

Imaging of the NPG’s Lansdowne Portrait during its 2016–17 treatment identified further changes, including shifts in columns and Washington’s legs. No underdrawing was detected for that painting. The report also discusses how paint was used to establish and define forms. Together, the findings offer evidence of decisions made during work on a particular canvas; they cannot establish a universal absence of preliminary planning throughout Stuart’s career. [9]

What unfinished portraits reveal

Unfinished portraits allow viewers to see relationships that a completed image can conceal. In the Athenaeum pair , the developed faces occupy much less than the full supports. The surrounding canvas and broad preliminary passages remain part of the paintings. A reproduction cropped closely around Washington’s head creates a different experience by removing much of that physical evidence. The whole object makes the contrast between the convincing face and its unfinished setting unavoidable. [10]

The small self-portrait has another history. Jane Stuart’s later account connects it with an image made for the painter’s wife, and Barratt considers how that private purpose might relate to its state of finish. An intimate likeness could be valued differently from a formal commission awaiting delivery. The interpretation helps explain the work’s character, while the exact reasons Stuart stopped remain less certain than the visible distribution of paint. [1]

John Bill Ricketts exposes more of the working surface. The National Gallery’s technical notes describe a twill support and large areas of uncovered ground, with a developed head and two horse heads worked in brown. One horse is outlined, while the other was formed from the dark area surrounding the sitter’s head. Later pencil inscriptions occupy the lower corners. They belong to the painting’s subsequent history and are not Stuart’s signature. [11]

These examples reveal different things: the retention of a presidential likeness, the possible private purpose of a self-image and the development of a performer’s portrait. They help distinguish the technical state of an object from an explanation of that state. An area of exposed ground can be observed directly. Whether it remained visible through abandonment, delay or a particular intended use depends on additional evidence about the work. [1] [10] [11]

Sittings, replicas and delayed completion

The history of the Adams pair demonstrates how painting could extend across years. Stuart began the portraits in 1800 and completed them in 1815. John Adams largely appears through the later sittings; Abigail Adams retains the earlier face within clothing completed later. The two objects therefore combine different temporal layers even though they were conceived as pendants. A single date would conceal part of their making. [12]

Repeated likenesses introduce another kind of time. Stuart’s Washington portraits generated artist replicas, larger adaptations and later commissions using established heads. A later canvas or wooden panel can carry an image first developed much earlier. The date of that particular object describes its making, while the sitter’s earlier encounter with Stuart belongs to the history of the likeness. The Washington comparison follows the different types and versions more fully. [13]

Repetition also requires decisions about format. A head established in a smaller portrait can become part of a larger figure and setting. Clothes, hands, furniture and background bring further demands, so identifying the source of a face does not explain the construction of the entire composition. Comparing whole paintings makes those differences easier to see than comparing cropped heads. The portrait type and the physical object remain related levels of the history. [13]

Later recollections can suggest a routine without accounting for all these circumstances. Jane Stuart described a progression through the head, complexion and expression over successive sittings. Bolton reprinted her account alongside other technical remarks. It is useful testimony about how work could develop, but its broad claims have to be considered beside retained studies, replicas and commissions completed after long delays. Those objects preserve a more varied practice than any one remembered studio sequence can contain. [14]

The surviving tools and their limits

The National Portrait Gallery’s palette associated with Stuart brings physical tools into the discussion. Its wooden surface retains wear and paint residues, while the thumbhole and surrounding shape indicate how the object could be held. The photograph gives a tangible counterpart to written accounts of loading a brush and arranging colour. It shows a working object that was subsequently preserved, with a history extending beyond the moment when paint was placed on it. [15]

The reverse inscription names later owners including Thomas Sully, Christian Schuessele and Stephen J. Ferris. It records the palette’s identification and a claimed chain of possession. The inscription and the residues answer different questions: one concerns remembrance and ownership, the other the object’s use and surviving surface. Neither supplies a chemical identification of the paint in a particular Stuart portrait. That requires evidence from the painting itself and appropriate technical examination. [15]

The gallery also holds drawing instruments associated with Stuart, made by George Adams Jr. around 1780. Their fitted case, dividers and other instruments broaden the material setting beyond palette and brushes. They are tools for drawing and measurement, not a set of painting brushes. Their association with the artist is valuable evidence, while their survival cannot demonstrate that he used each instrument in the making of every likeness. [16]

Written descriptions of a palette need the same care. Bolton’s compilation combines observations recorded at different times and transmitted through different writers. The colour arrangements described there are accounts of practice, while the NPG palette is a particular surviving object. Their relationship needs evidence before one is used to reconstruct the other. Together, tools, recollections and examined paintings offer complementary views of studio activity, with each retaining the kind of information it can actually provide. [5] [15]

Conservation and what we see now

The appearance of a painting continues to change after the artist stops working. Surface coatings, accumulated material, abrasion, repairs and retouching can affect the image encountered by a later viewer. Historical technical reports preserve observations made at a particular time. Their descriptions are valuable records, but they need to be placed within the treatment history before being used to characterize the painting’s present condition. [2] [3] [6]

Catherine Brass Yates supplies a clear example. The 1995 National Gallery catalogue describes a discoloured varnish . Barratt’s 2004 account subsequently discusses a recent surface cleaning and the balance of brushy and glossy effects. The earlier description therefore cannot be repeated as though no treatment had intervened. Reading the two accounts chronologically gives a more accurate understanding of both the painted surface and its later visibility. [3]

The Lansdowne conservation report similarly describes reducing or removing a yellowed coating and revealing cooler colour relationships. The project changed what viewers could see while also documenting earlier revisions within the painting. Its account concerns the NPG canvas and its treatment history. [9]

Worcester’s Morton notes record the support, preparation, earlier arm positions and past treatment of that painting. The visible photograph, the technical image discussed by the museum and the written report each provide a different view. A colour reproduction can communicate the pose and broad tonal relationships while offering much less access to subsurface evidence. Digital images are especially useful when their limits remain clear. [6]

The most rewarding approach is to move between the whole portrait and particular passages. Observe how the face is established, how fabric or a hand changes the rhythm of the brushwork, and where the support or preparatory tone participates in the effect. Then compare that observation with the evidence available for the exact object. The result is a richer understanding of Stuart’s paintings : persuasive likenesses made through varied decisions about colour, surface, finish and the time spent painting.

Frequently Asked Questions

Did Stuart paint only on canvas?

No. He also used wooden panels, including scored supports discussed in the account of his Boston practice. Different paintings require their own support identification. [8]

What does a ground contribute to the portrait?

It provides a prepared surface beneath the paint and can contribute to the image’s colour. In Catherine Brass Yates , the technical account describes a grey ground participating in shadows and middle tones. [3]

Did Stuart deliberately leave every portrait unfinished?

No single explanation fits the different works. The Athenaeum portraits, small self-portrait and Ricketts canvas have distinct histories. Their visible state and the reasons work stopped are separate questions. [1] [10] [11]

Can his palette identify the pigments in a painting?

The surviving palette is useful evidence of an associated studio object and its later ownership. Visible residue alone does not chemically identify the pigments in a particular portrait. [15]

Compare the face, clothing and background in one finished and one unfinished portrait. Where does Stuart concentrate precise detail, and where does a broader passage do more of the work?
