Coast at Santa Cristina

The sea in Joaquín Sorolla’s Coast at Santa Cristina appears through a screen of pine trunks and hanging branches. Its blue is intensely clear, yet the route towards it is crowded with trees, foliage and pale rock. Across the bottom of the picture, a strip of orange earth brings us close to the ground. Beyond it, the coast drops away. Sorolla makes the pleasure of the view depend on these interruptions: we look between trunks, beneath boughs and across a sudden change of level.

The Museo Sorolla identifies this oil painting as Costa de Santa Cristina, Lloret de Mar, dates it to 29 September 1915 and records its dimensions as 70 × 100 centimetres. It entered the museum through the founding bequest. The museum also identifies it as a preparatory study for the Catalonia panel at the Hispanic Society of America.^[1] That connection gives this unpeopled prospect a second life. The arrangement of trees and sea belongs both to a particular coastal landscape and to the making of a much larger scene of human activity.

Looking through the pines

The nearest trees establish a strong rhythm. At the left, several trunks rise together, their branching forms spreading across the upper part of the canvas. A slimmer trunk near the centre bends slightly as it rises, while another group occupies the right. Their intervals differ in width. Some openings offer only scraps of blue; others allow the sea to spread into a broad patch. The view feels discovered in pieces, with each gap making the distance newly visible.

The trunks have much more colour than a first glance might suggest. Reddish strips run alongside pale mauve and grey passages, while their shaded sides become dark and cool. Those changes help the trees turn in space. They also connect the upright forms to the rest of the painting: the redder notes answer the warm ground, and the cooler passages belong with the shadows among the branches. Even where a trunk is almost silhouetted against the sea, it remains a painted surface with several tones.

Above, the branches cross and divide without forming a regular arch. Some extend horizontally; others plunge diagonally into the view. Dark bunches of needles hang into the blue, while brighter yellow-green masses catch the light nearer the top. The canopy feels substantial, but it also admits slivers of sky and water. These small openings prevent the upper part of the painting from becoming a single closed block.

The cropping contributes to that effect. Trees continue beyond the canvas, and branches enter from outside its edges. We cannot stand back far enough to see a complete grove. Instead, Sorolla places us within its reach, where the nearest forms are too close to fit comfortably into a panoramic view. The painting’s breadth promises an expansive coast, while its foreground keeps the experience intimate and immediate.

Earth, rock and the drop towards the sea

The warm band along the lower edge gives the eye somewhere to begin. Its orange and ochre strokes run across the picture, with darker shapes interrupting them. Above this band, the ground falls out of sight and a pale cliff takes over. That change from warm, fairly continuous earth to broken, light-coloured rock is the picture’s clearest signal of depth.

The cliff is especially striking beneath the dense foliage at the left of centre. Cream, pink, pale violet and near-white patches describe an irregular face. Broad downward strokes suggest its fall, while small darker interruptions divide the surface into ledges and recesses. The rock does not require a sharply drawn boundary at every point. Its brightness against the adjacent greens makes much of its shape legible before we have followed its individual edges.

Lower down, a small pale curve of shore and the light meeting of water and rock carry the eye into the inlet. At the right, foliage rises again and partly blocks that descent. The space therefore opens and closes as we move across it. We can trace a route from the near earth towards the water, but vegetation keeps cutting across the line. This gives the coast a compact, folded quality, with changes of height compressed into a relatively narrow area of canvas.

There are no figures to provide a measure of the drop. Scale comes through overlap: trunks stand before foliage, foliage crosses rock, and rock interrupts the sea. The close trees remain large while the exposed coastline occupies smaller, more fragmented shapes. Looking at these relationships makes the picture’s height above the water palpable, even though Sorolla offers little empty space in which to survey it.

Blue held between warm colours

The sea provides the broadest cool interval in the picture. Its colour shifts between deeper blue and greener passages nearer the rocks. Short horizontal marks spread across it, contrasting with the vertical trunks and the angled cuts of the cliff. Those strokes give the water a different pace from the rest of the landscape: the trees divide and climb, the rock breaks and descends, and the sea extends sideways.

Warm colours surround that blue. The ground at the bottom, the reddish bark and the yellow foliage near the upper edge bring several kinds of warmth into contact with it. The result depends on proximity. A blue patch seen beneath a dark branch feels different from a similar patch beside sunlit rock. Sorolla varies the borders around the sea so that a comparatively simple expanse of water becomes active throughout the composition.

Shade is equally important. Dark green passages beneath the hanging foliage give the pale cliff a brilliant neighbour. The deeper shadows at the lower edge hold the foreground together, while lighter strokes across the ground suggest uneven illumination. Sunlight is expressed through this succession of exposures and shelters. We experience it as something passing over a place with many surfaces, each facing or receiving light differently.

The visible strokes preserve that variety. A long mark can carry the rise of a trunk; a clustered set of shorter marks can gather into foliage; a broad pale stroke can establish a plane of rock. Individual marks remain distinct, yet they combine into a coherent prospect. Moving between the painted marks and the landscape they describe is part of the picture’s interest.

From coastal study to Catalonia

In September 1915, Sorolla was seeking settings for his Catalonia painting. As the museum’s catalogue recounts, his search took him from Barcelona to Lloret de Mar, where Santa Cristina supplied the coastal setting he wanted.^[2] The study brings that landscape into focus before the figures of the larger composition enter it.

The connection with The Fish (Catalonia) makes this landscape particularly revealing. The museum’s 2013 catalogue reproduces the study beside the finished panel and explains that the landscape served, enlarged, as its background.^[2] The relationship is visible in the branching trees, the coastal opening and the sea beyond. In the panel, however, people and baskets fill much of the foreground. The setting must now accommodate bodies, gestures and the spread of the catch.

Comparing the two changes how we notice the trees. Here their trunks divide open patches of earth, rock and water. In the panel they also separate clusters of figures and rise above a crowded working space. The branches supply a canopy over that activity, while glimpses of blue keep the human gathering connected to the coast. An arrangement that is absorbing on its own becomes a framework for a more populous composition.

The study therefore offers a useful way into Sorolla’s preparation. The comparison reveals a set of large relationships capable of carrying another scene: the broad reach of the boughs, the spaces between trunks and the placement of bright distance. Yet the smaller painting retains its own sequence of discoveries. The pale cliff catches the eye, a branch draws it back towards the surface, and an opening releases it towards the water again.

The current museum title places that experience at Santa Cristina in Lloret de Mar.^[1] Its specificity matters. What makes the painting memorable is the conjunction of this close grove, this broken light-coloured coast and the blue held beyond them. Even with the later panel in mind, the landscape rewards time spent following its smaller encounters: red bark beside blue water, dark needles above pale rock, and the warm ground running beneath the whole view.
