Valencia, Couples on Horseback: Introduction

A great hanging mass of oranges gives Joaquín Sorolla’s Valencia, Couples on Horseback an unexpectedly weighty centre. The mounted figures rise above it, surrounded by patterned skirts, bright horse decorations and tall banners. A man on foot advances across the foreground, carrying one end of the pole from which the fruit hangs. Behind him, a white horse turns across the picture while a dark horse approaches almost head-on. The procession seems to press towards the viewer and pass sideways at the same time.

Painted in 1916, this is the Valencian panel of Sorolla’s Vision of Spain for the Hispanic Society in New York.[1] Its Spanish title, Valencia. Las grupas, directs attention to the arrangement of the riders: a man sits astride a horse, with a woman seated sideways behind him. The women’s spreading skirts make that shared seat especially conspicuous. Yet the picture gives almost equal attention to those who walk, the abundance of fruit, and the decorations that turn horses and people into a moving display.

The canvas measures 351 × 301 centimetres. The official loan list published for the Prado’s Sorolla exhibition identifies it as Hispanic Society accession A1805 and records those measurements without its frame.[2] Its considerable height matters to the effect. These figures belong to an architectural ensemble, and their approach has a bodily presence that a small reproduction can only suggest. Sorolla packs the relatively narrow upright canvas with overlapping forms, bringing the parade close enough for us to distinguish a headcloth, a sleeve, a horse’s lifted leg and individual oranges.

Two horses and a shared rhythm

The two principal horses establish different kinds of movement. The white horse on the left is largely seen from the side. Its pale neck and head lead towards the left edge, while its body disappears beneath riders and fabric. The man riding it presents a similarly clear profile, his head turned in the direction of travel. Behind him, the woman faces more towards us. Her dress spreads across the horse’s back in a broad, light triangle, balancing the upright figure in front of her.

The dark horse on the right makes a more direct approach. Its decorated head stands in front of the rider’s torso, while its legs reach down into the lower part of the canvas. Red, blue, yellow and orange ornaments break up the dark shape. The horse remains legible beneath this richness because Sorolla gives its legs and muzzle firm accents. Its forward-facing position answers the sideways movement on the left, keeping the procession from becoming a simple horizontal file.

People fill the intervals between the animals. A man near the dark horse supports the other end of the long fruit-bearing pole. Faces and hats appear behind him, and a yellow skirt catches light in the narrow space beyond the oranges. These smaller glimpses give the procession depth without opening a wide corridor through it. The crowd is understood through successive overlaps: a shoulder behind a horse’s head, a face beneath a banner, a skirt behind the fruit.

The arrangement also distributes attention between individual figures and the group. The left rider’s profile is clear against the blue sky, while the woman behind him is framed by palms and the pale sweep of her own dress. On the right, the rider’s dark hat gives his face a strong outline. None of these heads dominates the whole picture. Their separate directions of looking keep the gathering active, while the long carrying pole links the lower figures across the canvas.

Oranges carried into the foreground

The orange cluster is much more than a small regional emblem tucked into a corner. It occupies the opening between the horses, hangs near the viewer and interrupts the pale road with a dense warm shape. Green leaves separate some of the fruit, but many of the oranges gather into an almost continuous surface. Their rounded forms contrast with the straight pole above them and the narrow human legs below.

The two carriers make its weight visible. The pole runs across shoulders and hands, tying the labour of walking to the elevated display of the riders. The foremost man’s white clothing has large, simple folds; a broad dark band crosses his waist, and a patterned cloth falls from his shoulder. His projecting elbow and moving legs give him a physical independence from the more elaborate mounted group. He leads the eye into the scene from the lower left.

There is a productive difference of scale between the fruit and the costume patterns. The oranges resolve into distinct round units, whereas the flowers on the woman’s skirt become a shimmer of coloured touches across a much larger pale surface. Both reward close looking, but they work differently from a distance. The fruit reads as a single glowing mass; the skirt reads first as a luminous spreading shape. Sorolla uses detailed appearances to build a composition that remains clear across a room.

Oranges had also figured in the panel’s earlier conception. In his account of the commission, Florencio de Santa Ana describes an initial plan for an orange-harvesting subject, reconstructed from Sorolla’s correspondence with Clotilde. He identifies the eventual subject with Valencia’s July Fair and its culminating cavalcade. His account places the richly dressed women riding behind the men at the heart of that festive display.[3] The final picture brings fruit and procession together, giving agricultural abundance a conspicuous place within the celebration.

A festival painted in winter

Sorolla worked on the panel early in 1916. A Museo Sorolla drawing record, preserved in a copy hosted by the Centre d’Estudis Locals de Bétera, gives 31 January to 15 March for the execution of the final canvas, citing the published correspondence with Clotilde.[4] The season of making and the festival subject therefore belong to different calendars. The painting assembles its chosen Valencian imagery through preparation and staging.

A surviving pencil drawing makes part of that process unusually tangible. Museo Sorolla inventory 14430 studies the left-hand mounted couple and a standing man associated with the oranges. The sheet also carries notes concerning Bétera and, on its reverse, orange harvesting and wrapping fruit in paper.[4] On the drawing’s front, sweeping lines search out the skirt, horse and standing figure. Their relationships are already the problem: how a broad mounted group can sit behind a more upright person in the foreground.

Comparing that sheet with the canvas shows what colour adds to the design. The final white clothing separates the foremost figure from the road; the orange cluster pulls the eye towards the middle; the rider’s pale costume and the woman’s flowered skirt unite a large area above. A structure explored through lines becomes a set of interlocking coloured masses. The drawing is a small preparatory object with its own identity, while the finished canvas turns those relationships into an encounter at human and architectural scale.

Santa Ana also notes two small canvases, a gouache and drawings among the preparations, and points to earlier occasions on which Sorolla had painted the paired riding motif.[3] The subject offered Sorolla a familiar way to combine a profile, a frontal face and a great spread of fabric on one animal, then develop the group into a larger procession.

Clothing as the substance of the picture

Sorolla’s interest in the clothes extended beyond their broad silhouettes. Covadonga Pitarch Angulo’s Museo Sorolla study of Valencian dress discusses his search for garments while preparing Las grupas. It reproduces his report to Clotilde of 21 January 1916, describing the purchase of a woman’s shirt with puffed sleeves and lace, together with an apron and a scarf.[5] Such acquisitions connect the painting’s pageantry to particular material things selected and examined by the artist.

Pitarch places this interest within the revival of Valencian regional dress and its increasingly festive use. Her study centres on a photograph of Clotilde in labradora dress; it supplies a useful context for the elaborate clothing here without identifying Clotilde as one of these riders.[5] These garments carried local associations into a scene arranged for a particular artistic purpose.

In the canvas, the woman on the white horse wears a light upper garment above the broad patterned skirt. Her bent arm creates an angular opening against its pale expanse. The woman partly visible at the far right repeats the theme of richly patterned fabric, but her dress runs out beyond the edge. This cropping enlarges the procession in the imagination: the picture includes a complete central encounter while suggesting that more people and animals continue outside it.

The horse decorations amplify the effect of the clothes. Repeated tassels and coloured patches surround the dark animal’s head and chest, creating a dense area of small, sharp accents. Across from them, the woman’s skirt offers a wider and softer field of pattern. The picture can sustain both because Sorolla places them over very different underlying tones. Bright ornament stands against a dark horse; coloured flowers scatter over a pale dress.

Palms, banners and open sky

Above the crowd, the banners give red and yellow a much larger scale. Their hanging stripes echo the vertical palm trunks, while blue upper sections stand against the blue sky through changes in tone and painted ornament. One banner is cut by the right edge. Another occupies the space between the palms and the stone shrine, turning the upper half of the composition into a sequence of tall, closely spaced forms.

The palms make a looser canopy. Their fronds curve out across the sky, answering the spreading skirts below with a different kind of fan shape. Through the left-hand opening, a low band of green countryside provides a quiet horizontal distance. It offers a breath of space beside the congested foreground. The road, by contrast, is filled with broad mauve and pink shadows, so that even the ground beneath the figures contributes colour.

The shrine’s pale columns and darker central figure introduce a measured architectural rhythm among the fronds and fabric. Sorolla sets its firm outlines behind the moving riders, allowing the stonework to steady a scene full of small changes in direction. The eye can travel upward from the foreground carrier through the white-clad rider to a palm trunk, or from the dark horse through the hat above it towards the shrine. These routes hold the tall composition together.

The Hispanic Society commissioned the fourteen-painting ensemble of Vision of Spain. Its regional scenes now surround the viewer in a dedicated gallery.[6] Valencia, Couples on Horseback contributes an especially concentrated encounter: two mounted groups, walking figures, fruit and banners brought into a narrow field of vision. Its festive identity emerges from these material relationships. The oranges hang heavily, the skirts spread, the horses advance and the banners rise above them, making celebration something the viewer can almost measure in weight, height and movement.
