Galicia, La romería (The Pilgrimage): Introduction

A bagpiper stands among cattle beneath a dense canopy of trees. Women sit close together in the foreground, where white clothing catches the light; behind them, a narrow band of blue water opens between dark trunks. Joaquín Sorolla’s Galician panel brings these different presences into unusually close quarters. Animals almost enclose the gathering, while the branches spread overhead like the roof of an outdoor room.

Painted in 1915, the oil on canvas measures 351 × 300 cm and belongs to the Hispanic Society Museum & Library in New York. It forms part of Sorolla’s fourteen-panel Vision of Spain.[1] Its Spanish title, Galicia. La romería, is conventionally translated as Galicia, The Pilgrimage. Another published English title is Galicia: The Cattle Fair, used by Blanca Pons-Sorolla in her account of the ensemble.[2] Both the musical gathering and the cattle matter to the picture. The scene brings people and animals together beneath trees beside the ría.

A gathering held between trees and cattle

Sorolla places the musician a little left of centre. His white sleeves make his bent arms legible against the darker people behind him, and the instrument occupies the space between his hands and torso. His stance gives the standing group a firm upright. Around him, heads appear at different heights, some turned sideways and others facing more directly outwards. A bright headscarf behind his shoulder provides a small, concentrated accent amid the surrounding browns and greens.

The lower group answers this upright arrangement with a series of low, seated shapes. At the right, a woman in pale clothes and a dark head covering turns across the picture. Her bent arms and gathered skirt form an enclosure around her body. Farther towards the centre, overlapping figures, scarves and folds create a more intricate cluster. Their closeness requires a slower kind of looking: a head emerges above an arm, a sleeve crosses another garment, and a pale fold separates one body from the next.

A basket holding white fabric sits at the front. Its rounded bulk is easy to distinguish even in a small reproduction, and it occupies a position close to the spectator’s imagined feet. The fabric makes a broad, luminous shape beneath the more complicated figures. It also establishes a useful change of texture: the basket’s firm edge contains material that rises and falls in soft folds.

Cattle press into this human space from both sides. At the left, a pale animal’s flank extends beyond the canvas edge, making its body seem to continue into the spectator’s surroundings. A smaller animal stands beneath and beside it. On the right, warm brown bodies form another substantial barrier. Heads, horns and backs interrupt the outlines of the people, so that no neat boundary separates the gathering from the animals. The group has to be understood through these overlaps.

This arrangement gives the image an unusual combination of intimacy and weight. The people are close enough for small turns of the head to matter, but the cattle make their surroundings physically substantial. Their broad sides contrast with the narrow folds of clothing and the musician’s articulated hands. Sorolla sets the scale of a human gesture against the scale of an animal body within the same shallow foreground.

What the two titles bring into view

The difference between The Pilgrimage and The Cattle Fair changes the questions a viewer brings to the painting. The first directs attention towards a festive gathering; the second makes the animals and the possibility of exchange more prominent. Neither title, by itself, explains every figure or object. The musician, seated women, cattle and shoreline share the canvas without being organised into an easily narrated sequence.

Víctor Viana’s local history, Sorolla y Galicia: Su estancia en Vilagarcía, preserves evidence of both kinds of naming. He reports the painter’s use of La Romería and cites a 1920 newspaper account that referred to a cattle-market subject.[3] This history helps explain why English titles differ. It also encourages attention to the full mixture of activities represented: music has a place among the animals, and an everyday material world remains present within the gathering.

The picture’s structure makes that mixture persuasive. There is no single line of people crossing the scene. The musician stands while others sit; the cattle face different directions; figures farther back are partly concealed. The viewer can follow several local relationships instead of one dominant action. A face looks towards another face, the musician handles his instrument, and the seated group occupies its own compact space near the basket.

The sense of an occasion arises from this concentration. People, animals and clothing have been gathered into a defined setting. Yet the surrounding trees keep it open to air and changing light. Obstacles, shaded recesses and small openings towards the water give the gathering a setting with its own depth and irregularities.

Vilagarcía and the work of selection

Sorolla made the panel during his stay in Vilagarcía de Arousa in 1915. Viana draws on local newspapers and recollections transmitted through the family of Manuel Vega, who assisted the painter. These accounts connect the campaign with the grounds of Vista Alegre and describe a platform, a structure for raising and lowering the canvas, and a protective covering for the outdoor work.[3] They give the monumental painting a local setting: its making involved places to work, people to sit and assistance with the equipment.

The surviving studies show another aspect of that preparation. A small pencil drawing called Una gallega, in the Museo Sorolla collection, was made at Vilagarcía in 1915. Measuring only 11.7 × 20.2 cm, it presents a woman from behind, with her arms at her waist. The Museo de Belas Artes de A Coruña’s record identifies it as preparatory for the Galician panel and draws attention to the written colour notes accompanying the clothing.[4]

The sheet makes a striking contrast with the final canvas. A few black and red marks establish the figure at one end of a largely empty page. The spread of the skirt, the head covering and the elbows are given particular clarity. Written indications extend out into the blank space. Observation here involves recording information that the pencil alone cannot retain: the shape can be drawn, while colour is also remembered through words.

That combination helps explain why dress deserves close attention in the finished painting. A scarf is a coloured shape, but it is also something wrapped, knotted and folded. A skirt gives a seated figure breadth; a white sleeve makes the direction of an arm conspicuous. Clothing helps Sorolla build bodies and intervals as well as describe what people wear. The drawing documents this patient interest without requiring every study to correspond to one identifiable figure in the final arrangement.

The Galician campaign also produced works that retained their separate identities. An exhibition at A Coruña brought the series’ preparatory drawings and gouaches together with Gaitero gallego and Tipo de Galicia, works made during the 1915 stay and lent by the Museo Sorolla.[5] Such works broaden the view of the campaign beyond one finished panel. They show the value of looking at individual figures alongside the larger problem of combining people, animals and landscape.

Shade as a structure of colour

The trees occupy a remarkable amount of the canvas. Their trunks rise behind the nearest figures and divide into branches that cross above them. Some branches run almost horizontally; others climb or bend back into the canopy. This network holds the upper part of the image together while the gathering supplies a denser pattern below.

Shade does not make the scene uniformly dark. The canopy breaks the light into separate passages. A sleeve brightens, a face catches a warmer patch, and a narrow strip of ground emerges between shadows. These changes allow Sorolla to suggest the conditions beneath foliage without covering the whole scene in one greenish tone.

The trunks themselves contain strong shifts of colour. Warm ochres and reddish passages sit beside much darker areas. As the eye follows a trunk upwards, its solid mass gives way to smaller leaves and streaks of brightness. The same painted structure can therefore read first as a substantial tree and then as a sequence of coloured touches. This change of scale keeps the large upper area active.

The cattle introduce another range of surfaces. The pale hide on the left receives soft changes of pink, cream and grey, while the animals on the right concentrate warmer reds and browns. Their rounded bodies receive light differently from the fabric at the front. Clothing breaks into folds and edges; the animal flanks carry broader transitions. Sorolla uses these differences to give the crowded foreground variety without dissolving its large masses.

White is especially effective because it appears in several separate forms. The musician’s sleeves are relatively narrow and interrupted by his arms; the seated woman’s clothing makes a broader curved shape; the cloth in the basket forms a low mound. These light areas draw attention to different kinds of volume. Their recurrence connects the people and objects even though they are separated by shadow.

The ría beyond the foreground

The blue water is visible only through gaps, but it changes the whole painting. Without those openings the figures and cattle would be pressed against a dense wall of vegetation. The ría establishes distance, and the pale land and structures beyond it provide a different scale from the nearby bodies. The eye moves from a hand or fold of cloth to a much larger space in a single glance.

Its position is also important. The water passes behind the heads and shoulders of the standing figures, interrupting the prevailing greens and earth colours. A horizontal band of blue answers the vertical trunks. This crossing of directions steadies a composition full of irregular branches, animal outlines and folded garments.

The opening at the left works differently from the larger glimpse towards the right. One is partly blocked by the heavy trunk and the nearest animal; the other stretches above the cattle towards a pale distant shore. Looking through them involves different degrees of obstruction. Distance becomes something discovered between nearby things, preserving the sensation of standing inside the shaded gathering.

Within Vision of Spain, this concentrated arrangement offers a useful comparison with Castilla, the Feast of Bread. Castile spreads its groups across an exceptionally wide canvas. Galicia gathers its people and animals into a much more compact field. Here, the branching trees provide much of the breadth that the figures themselves cannot occupy. Their canopy enlarges the scene upwards while the water opens it backwards.

The paintings were commissioned by Archer Milton Huntington in 1911 and inaugurated at the Hispanic Society in 1926.[6] In that surrounding ensemble, the Galician canvas contributes a distinctive relationship between people and their setting. Its human group remains close and readable, while the scale of the trees and the distant ría prevents the landscape from becoming incidental. The bagpiper, the cloth-filled basket, the cattle and the blue water hold attention in turn, giving the gathering several centres of interest within one sheltered space.
